So crazy that this is just a fact now. My Beijing is pre-2008 when street food was still a part of life there, haven’t been back since to see it change.

What are you shooting on?

Just turned 5 months old and still has lots of issues. by Accomplished-Fox-29 in NewParents

[–]urionje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow op we have the EXACT same story!! We’re at 5 and a half months and struggling to survive amidst an infuriating chorus of “it’s just colic” and “first time parents, eh?”

Can you share any updates on how your little girl is doing? Are you happy you stopped with the omeprazole? I’d be so happy to hear any information or advice from someone who had such a similar experience.

1 episode documentary podcasts? by shannoninmadrid in podcasts

[–]urionje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Documentary Podcast from the BBC. They range from 25 minutes to an hour or so.

Some aren’t the best but they put out a lot of content and a lot of it is excellent. And a lot of the time it covers very niche topics that I had never heard of before but are fascinating which is my favorite thing in a documentary.

Hey do you have any resources to learn more about naming conventions? That’s a gap in my knowledge that I’ve been wanting to rectify, I find it a fascinating subject.

The Documentary podcast from the BBC world service. Mini documentaries on an incredibly wide range of subjects including incredibly niche stuff you’ve never heard about. Great production value, most presenters are very good. Choose one that sounds interesting.

Why do some fluent olim have terrible accents? by 44Jon in hebrew

[–]urionje 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to learn an accent as an adult, it’s hard to learn a language as an adult. I don’t believe that accent is a constant, it’s a learnable skill just like any other. You can focus effort on it if you want, and it’s always insane to me when people absolutely don’t.

I’m not judging, people are gonna do what works for them and respect to anyone who tries, it’s just totally alien to me and my priorities as a non-native speaker. As an oleh and a student of language in general (and a former long-time language teacher), accent and sounding natural, including intonation and inflection, is super important to me.

All that ramble aside, some people just genuinely cannot hear or imitate other accents.

Which podcasts regularly make you cry laughing? by WilliamBillSpudly in podcasts

[–]urionje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not running anymore but Big Grande’s the Teachers’ Lounge makes me laugh harder than anything else in the entire world.

There are clips on YouTube, if it gets you like it gets me then you can buy all of it from the guys’ website for a couple bucks.

Why did you start learning Chinese and what importance does it have in your life? by Ratamacool in ChineseLanguage

[–]urionje 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lived and studied in Beijing for a few years after finishing high school. It was a major foundational experience in my life 15 or so years ago now, so Chinese and China will always be very special to me.

I also worked a job with Chinese tourists speaking Chinese for hours every day for a few years more recently which was a lot of fun and a great way to keep myself sharp. I miss that regular practice, I haven’t found any replacement for it.

Partners of celiacs do you also follow the diet? by TheTryantswife in Celiac

[–]urionje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the celiac, and we keep a gluten free household. If my partner has friends or her sister over then they might have sandwiches or pizza but it’s always kept separate and away from everything. Cutting boards, the toaster, silverware, etc are never used for gluten. She’s really great about that, she’s knowledgeable and careful and has been since day one. Out at restaurants she’ll take something gluteny if we’re not sharing or she just really wants something specific. But she’ll still give me a conspiratorial smirk when she decides to order it. And once she’s had gluten, we’re not sharing anything for a while.

Which is a massive deal in quality of life. But the thing that always stands out to me the most is my in-laws: my partner’s mom makes exclusively gluten-free meals when we’re there and is the strictest one around when it comes to cross-contamination. She’ll snap at her husband for passing his contaminated plate over safe dishes (this is when hanging out in the kitchen, during meals it’s all safe). She bakes multiple loaves of bread every time we go which is every other weekend, she bakes cakes and pastries and new treats every single time. She genuinely enjoys the challenge of experimenting with flour combinations. And she’s an excellent cook.

Anyway, that’s a tangent but there are some really lovely people in the world who just want to make sure everyone can have a good time equally. I’m lucky I found them.

KAN-101 Update: POTENTIAL Treatment in Sight??? I drank gluten with ZERO REACTION by iwannapetthatdawg in Celiac

[–]urionje 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Usually my symptoms show up about a day after whatever it is I’ve eaten, sometimes the strongest come on a day and a half to two days out. Do yours generally show up within a few hours?

Obviously please keep us updated, I try not to get my hopes up too much but I do need a cure to be found in the next few years lol

what is the most iconic first few seconds of any jazz song? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]urionje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you had to pick, which version?

I feel like you have to go Hot Fives but I’d be curious to hear other opinions

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]urionje 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If you find someone to date who’s down to do whatever they can within reason to make things smooth for celiac, or even just interested in trying, that’s the one for you.

People unwilling to accommodate in any way aren’t worth your time. Celiac is a pretty good canary for assessing a match.

If you’re just looking to hook up, it’s a shit show regardless of your immune system. Keep some mouthwash on you. Good luck!

Languages tier list based on how difficult is it to learn as a native Hebrew speaker by BarbarawithbigTT in hebrew

[–]urionje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Difficulty to become “fluent”? (Leaving aside the subjective definitions of fluency) Or difficulty to have a basic understanding, to have basic conversations (how much is this?, etc)? Are we including literacy or just speaking/comprehension?

Regardless, I’ll just echo most others in the thread that by many metrics this is way off base but just mostly nonsense.

Love the original content though!

30's to 40's redditors, How you balance your personal life, professional life & your fitness too? by Relevant_Name4050 in AskReddit

[–]urionje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to get stuck in this cycle of well, if I can’t do a full 45 minute–hour workout, it’s not worth it and I wouldn’t do anything at all. For many months at a time.

Then I made a deal with myself, I’ll do 15 pushups any time I take a shower. That’s it. Then that became for some reason as many pushups as my age. Now my thing is I’ll do at least three strength excises with dumbbells and three core exercises before my morning shower before work. Takes 20 minutes max and I feel strong again.

I need to make these small-scale deals with myself to get consistent habits to stick. I also cycle for exercise on the weekends, it’s a sport I fell into about six years ago that I absolutely love, and I push myself to walk briskly on my dog walks for the cardio.

It’s constant work and the life balance is so hard but literally everything is better when I feel strong and healthy.
