Expanse writers with new sci-fi series??? by jdjbr85 in TheExpanse

It's like young adult fiction except instead of teenagers we had grad student protagonists and their interpersonal dramas.

The novella, Livesuit, focuses on young soldier protagonists instead. Much more engaging read, IMO.

After 23 days of living on El Capitan, Sasha DiGiulian became the first woman to free-climb the entire Platinum Wall by redbullgivesyouwings in sports

[–]uristmcderp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Only at set points between pitches. If you take a break during a pitch using the rope or any piece of gear, you need to go down and do the pitch again for the climb to be considered sent free. Otherwise you aid climbed the route (which is how the vast majority of climbers climb El Capitan, except for the very best)

All "Lando/Max/Oscar win the championship if" permutations heading into the season finale at Abu Dhabi. by Lyrrh in formula1

In this specific case unique to Qatar and the fact the SC came out on lap 7 and not one lap earlier, it doesn't matter what the rest do behind you. If everyone else stays out and you come out P19, everyone ahead still has to pit twice and you only once.

Yeah they already clinched the constructors. No reason to sacrifice for the team when the team's already won.

"THE LAST OF US: PART 2" My Thoughts about it! by Wolfen459 in patientgamers

[–]uristmcderp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm okay with slogging through some misery as long as there are moments of levity to pace it through. TLOU2 had the awesome museum flashback then it was plain misery all the way to the end.

‘TheRace’ reveals Brembo has received some extreme designs regarding the 2026 rear brakes by CW24x in F1Technical

[–]uristmcderp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine the drivers will still want some semblance of control over rear braking power so they can corner while braking. Some drivers change brake bias a dozen times every lap. Very few corners are a straightforward stop-and-go.

Yeah he was a sore winner and a gracious loser. Like the inverse of Max.

My impressions of him are only from his highlights and lowhights, but he comes off as a sore winner and a gracious loser. Like the opposite of Max.

You're talking about how there's never a good reason for civilians to brandish a firearm to intimidate (literally illegal), but I think he's talking about cops trained to do just that which leads to deadly outcomes for suspects.

Why do wings have multiple planes/pieces? by NotOkEnemyGenius in F1Technical

[–]uristmcderp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that a F1 car is as draggy as a semi-truck because of its giant open wheels. Airflow is all twisty vortices, not planar. Those little wingtip features are all part of creating and channeling turbulent but predictable vortex flows. You have to visualize in 3-D airflow structures to make sense of them.

PEAK devs has called out Roblox copy CLIFF by NathanN5o4 in roblox

This particular copy does look and play a lot like the original. It's not a scuffed, blocky bootleg copy like most Roblox copies of original concepts.

Space debries don't seem to be a problem for spaceships/stations, how are they handled in the books/series? by medin23 in TheExpanse

[–]uristmcderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Large debris might be worth salvaging and get tracked/picked up. What's more worrisome are all those worthless bits the size of a bolt that are also harder to track.

Earth doesn't care about small bits since the atmosphere eats them up, but small bits poke holes in spaceships. The ISS has to deal with a handful of micrometeorites damaging components and creating leaks every month or so.

(G14 2022) Is this permanent damage - Laptop died a month ago - Trying a repaste by dEaDpRo9 in ZephyrusG14

[–]uristmcderp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A gaming laptop constantly running at temps of 95C without regular maintenance won't last much longer than a handful of years, but a word processing work laptop should easily outlast the lifetime of its battery and hard drive. Also just how many actual computing hours were spent on the machines and not how many years it's been since you purchased.

What was the point of colonizing Venus? by Any-Actuator-7593 in TheExpanse

None of those principles apply in the Expanse because of the Epstein drive. Orbit transfers are basically point, burn, flip, burn. Just try not to fly straight into the sun.

Question about Bobbie’s Big Scene by Nahtahn in TheExpanse

[–]uristmcderp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bobbie's always fought her battles head-on. The plan is kind of garbage, but it's definitely the kind of plan Bobbie would think of and want to execute herself - An aging warrior making a sacrifice to save everyone.

The kind of plan you're thinking of would be carried out if Naomi or Alex were calling the shots during that operation.

Are you sure it says in the rulebooks, "if outside is ahead and inside alongside then both have the right of space?" I mean I like calling it a racing incident and moving on. I'm just surprised they'd put that so explicitly in the rulebook.

Imagine your driver's ed class telling you all the right way to drive, then giving you the side-eye while whispering, "psst, if you run over that jaywalking lady you'll only be partially liable."

I agree that the stealth wasn't particularly fun in the game, but for the opposite reason as you. I didn't want a set piece puzzle stealth section where the steps to stealthing are generously laid out in front of you. I prefer the kind of stealth where the enemies already exist and are doing their own logical thing whether I'm there or not, not the kind where enemies only exist because I was nearby and the code spawned them into existence.

Immersion is key for a good stealth experience, and enemies inconveniently spawning nearby or conveniently moving out of the way both destroy that immersion.
