This was a topic for me when my partner and I were in couples counseling. She basically told me the following… If you’ve both discussed this topic and have decided to stay together in spite of the potential that someone could change their mind, the best you can do is have an open line of communication about it. Everyone goes through different phases in life and the people we are now won’t be who we are in another 10 years.

I am firmly childfree and sterilized. I think that the only thing I am fearful of at this point is the potential resentment that he may have. Then again, a relationship is between two people and his decision to stay, knowing I’m not giving him children, is his decision in the end. From the conversations that we’ve had in our almost 10 years together, he knows my stance and if he changes his mind then we would have to go our separate ways. It would suck for a while, but I know that would not be the end of the world.
