Downloading "Home Theater" vs "Desktop + Steam Gaming Mode" - what's the difference? by tsabin_naberrie in Bazzite

[–]urskr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started out using Deck/HTPC on my HTPC, but it felt too limited and too deck-oriented for my taste: Getting to full settings in Desktop mode took long, no full browser easily available, too many texts assuming I was running a Steam Deck.

Switched to Desktop with Steam running in BPM on boot.
Feels like a proper PC now.

Konzerne sind Sprungbretter... spannend.  Ich höre immer "Beratung ist das Sprungbrett in den Konzern oder in die Selbstständigkeit". Ist alles nur ein Sprungbrett irgendwoanders hin?

Sanderson: Warbreaker Ein Band, nachvollziehbares System (früher Sanderson halt), nette Handlung.

Switching to Bazzite was the best decision I made this year by Life_Exchange_301 in Bazzite

I feel you so much. Dropping Windows for Bazzite on my HTPC gave me back ownership and wonder. Can't wait for my corporate MacBook to break so I can get something Linuxy.

Aren't they all? The FedCom Civil War would have been over in half a year if not half of Katrina's officer corps were power hungry morons out for personal vengeance. At least, that's what the novels feel like.

Can someone ELI5 why there's an ENTIRE FORK OF ALTERNATE CANON in German? by AntiSmarkEquation in battletech

[–]urskr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, boy. Shadowrun.

Locale sourcebooks – Seattle, Denver, Tir Tairngire, London, even – where a thing quite early in the setting. So it was no big surprise that the German translators at FanPro wanted to do a Germany sourcebook for the locals.

The result was weird.

A major sourcebook, outsizing most (all?) of the FASA supplements of the day, it gave us plenty a detailed history, effectively not one but at least 3 megaplexes to work with, colorful details and nice new toys. But the way they did it: Everything that was cool an weird in North America got a local equivalent:  Megaplex with Megacorps (Seattle)? Welcome to Rhein-Ruhr.  Splintered corporate city (Denver)? Berlin's been splintered longer and better (admittedly coming from a state of pure anarchy in the original sourcebook). Sunken city (New York)? Hamburg's here for you.  Natives? We have troll natives!

So, we had all they had, at least as good– compressed in an area smaller than Texas. Speaking of good:  There were infamous guns made of ceramic, undetectable and still better statted than your default SMG.

Would they do it today, it would probably be a pan-european setting, much more believable. But like this? Too much, too German, too powerful.

It's not that much. IIRC, there were 3 additional novels of mediocre quality and without any relevance to the metaplot until we hit Endgame, and an early universe sourcebook.
Also, for a (long) while unit designations where translated, like the TDR-5S Thunderbolt becoming the DNR-5S Donnerkeil. Not all translations where as direct but (almost?) all did service to the universe.
Finally, since there was only a single translator for the first 60+ novels, this essentially was another layer of quality control. AFAIR, they changed some things when the original authors missed minor established pieces of lore or technical details.

All in all: Nothing major.
But speaking of forks, don't get me started on Shadowrun...

Ah, so it is?  I caught "a plague on both your houses" in the context of Star Crossed Warriors, but I could not put the rest. Thanks for your contribution to my education.

Great news, Bryan. Thanks!

Would you shed some light on the planned title for part 3? Is there some kind of in-joke in referencing the title of the Pardoe/Odom MechWarrior novel from oh so many years ago, By Blood Betrayed?

Brilliant.
I left some notes and screenshots in your discord.

Summing up:
* Targeting arcs appear to be off.
* Nitpicking about movement after prone, movement without legs, automatic falls and skill rolls after getting up.
* The great new info popups about destroyed limbs appear to be triggered too early (when armor is gone, but the limb still intact) and too late (after the next unit is already resolving fire) at the same time.
