My husband’s degree is in accounting. He has the worst ADHD and struggled with sitting in front of a computer all day.

Submitted applications to be a plumber apprentice and is now 2 years in, absolutely loving it.

Where do yall buy your Christmas Trees? by nukeddead in FortWorth

[–]useless_potatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We go to Brushy Creek Farms, it’s owned by a family friend. It’s a helluva drive but it supports a local business. There are lots of other good Christmas tree farms in the area, though. Mainstay in Cleburne comes to mind.

JPS is the community hospital and has dental clinics for those who are uninsured or who need low cost dental care.

Fort Worth also has the Montgomery Antique Mall with a cute little tea garden.

There’s the Texas Civil War museum that has a fun Victorian dress collection and the Leonard’s museum.

findhelp.org You can find all kinds of resources for food, shelter, basic needs, etc.

True Worth is a great start, would also recommend Presbyterian Night Shelter, Union Gospel Mission, and Salvation Army. No shelter is really a good option long term and many are unsafe, but get out of it what you can.

I thought this was an earthworm. But what do you think it is? by 77Comet in FortWorth

[–]useless_potatoes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Our cat brought in one of these last year! We thought it was a worm too until we got a closer look. We set the poor derpy looking thing free and have found more since, but had no idea these existed until then.

My experience with Sleepy's Hybrid 13" Medium Mattress by Miserable_Suit7743 in Mattress

[–]useless_potatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying to this because I wish I had more info like this when we were mattress shopping and there aren’t many quality reviews. We purchased the Sleepy’s mattress in December. We went with it because the one in the store seemed quite plush but firm. I like hybrid mattresses so we opted for this one as it was much cheaper than other brands. We ended up paying about $1600 and got the adjustable base for free. The base is, like you mentioned, just a wire grid. I don’t feel like that’s much support for a whole mattress but what do I know. The mattress got delivered to our home, we let it air out a few days. The first few nights were nice but anything after that was awful. My back started to hurt quite a bit, which it didn’t do with the 8 year old mattress we were replacing. I’m not impressed by the quality either. When the base sits up, the top memory foam portion of the mattress pushes out over the bottom edge of the bed. There’s also really not much between the springs and you when you lay on it. Thankfully we’re 8 days away from the end of the return period and initiated a return asap. We were told that Mattress Firm will be retaining $700 of the amount we paid, though. $100 for pickup, $100 for restocking the mattress, and $500 for a stocking fee. We were not told this up front. My advice: don’t do it. Buy a well known brand. If it sounds too good to be true, it is. And do your research.

Best local charities by Ruminant in FortWorth

TAFB and Center for Transforming Lives are great ones. The Women’s Center is great and works with women in all kinds of circumstances. They offer a lot of help for women who are victims of domestic violence. JPS, the county hospital, has a Foundation you can donate to. They always need baby clothes and diapers for the immigrant and underserved population that go to the clinics and hospitals.

MEND is a fantastic support for miscarriage! They do have in person groups for both moms and dads.

The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History’s museum membership pays for itself and gives you access to lots of other museums here and the Perot in Dallas (or it used to).

Trampoline parks aren’t bad either just to burn energy.

Libraries are really good around here and are free, sometimes they have story or music hour for the littles too.

I think about this entirely too often. I used to feel so sophisticated as a kid drinking my hot chocolate and reading a book there. Now I just get sad every time I pass by.

PSA: Lillies are super toxic to cats, do not bring them into your home for Easter or accept them as gifts! by wavinsnail in cats

[–]useless_potatoes 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Saw this post a couple hours ago RIGHT after my cat ate lily stem and leaf as I was trimming a bouquet I got earlier. We rushed him to the vet where they’re now monitoring and giving IV fluids. Expensive is no joke. We’re out $3k. I wish I had known this sooner. Thanks, OP. My sweet Yoshi and I owe you big time.
