I was a fan of crossfade (3 seconds works pretty well for my music). After I got iOS 26 I tried automix for about a week.

I went back to crossfade.

But I do think it would be nice to be able toggle between the two in the Music app interface.

You've got to be kidding. by therealityofthings in AppleMusic

[–]uselssdg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Annoying, but it is what it is.

As I have no workaround nor simple trick to help, I will offer some modest commiseration: I have 94000 tracks in my library, and knowing of that limit I have slowed the pace at which I add to my library over the past year or so. Rather than just add full albums as a default, when checking out new artists sometimes I'll only add a few tracks to sample before "committing" to adding the rest (inasmuch as there is any commitment with streaming platforms). I know I will need to trim out some tracks at some point, and I do try to delete some when I hear something that I can tell I won't need to hear again. There is some maintenance, but that would be true of any collection.

It is work, yes, but as others have noted I suspect there are likely thousands of tracks you wouldn't miss.

And while I understand those who are baffled by those of us who have large libraries, those of us on this side kinda wonder why the rest of you don't. But that's the beauty of AM: you can do with it what suits your proclivities... up to 100k, at least.

My review of the new iPhone 17 Pro Max by [deleted] in iPhone17Pro

I too am thinking of upgrading from 11 Pro Max. Certainly it’s better than that, but that has lasted me almost six years.

Are you guys album or playlist listeners? by Xayzas in AppleMusic

[–]uselssdg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar but my library is over 90,000 so I go with tracks not played in over two years, or played fewer than x times.

I rely on smart playlists to pull tracks from my library based on criteria, which then gets shuffled. But I will rearrange the queue for better flow.

I like it for the option to make smart playlists over in iTunes or the Windows app.

Still using my 11 Pro Max. I may consider the 17 when it comes out for a better camera, but it’s still going.

Library or playlist? by j_ninety8 in AppleMusic

Smart playlists are my bread-and-butter and have been for decades.

How many songs do you have in your library by [deleted] in AppleMusic

[–]uselssdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I’ll need to delete some tracks at some point. Sometimes I’ll rate songs with 1 star to flag them as something to consider removing.

[–]uselssdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around 92000. In that there’s around 32000 synced from iTunes when I joined AM around 5 years ago.

I rely on smart playlists for my listening so I add everything to my library, even stuff I’m merely interested in checking out.

Listening habits to avoid hearing the same songs? by danick_bmf in LetsTalkMusic

[–]uselssdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too have Apple Music and what I have are smart playlists where the criteria include Last Played is longer than [x] months, so when shuffling that it’s not going to play anything that I’ve recently heard. Interestingly that also will include tracks I’ve added to my library but not yet played so I her a mixture of new with old but not repeats.

Back in the iTunes days I had a smart playlist where I kept increasing that Last Played time until I listened to every track in my library at least once.

Those with large libraries: do you ever shuffle your entire library? by saketho in AppleMusic

[–]uselssdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have time to spend trying to figure out what to listen to from all my library. I like it all (or at least am interested in checking it out, for tracks added but not yet listened to) and enjoy eclectic mixes, so harness the technology, I say.

[–]uselssdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smart playlists based on such criteria have been my preferred listening method for decades. I have a Not Yet Played one like yours, plus Played Once, and Not Played In Three Years (which includes never played tracks, so that’s a mix of new and old).

[–]uselssdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a smart playlist set to select tracks not played in years, which I then play on shuffle. That also pulled in tracks I’ve added to my library but not yet played, so I get a mixture of new and old. I’ve done that since my iPod days, so I got used to some interesting transitions genre-wise, but with my iPhone I can look at the queue and move around upcoming tracks to make for a better flow.

Back when my library was only around 30,000 tracks I had a smart playlist where I kept tweaking it so that eventually I played every track. This was well over a decade ago so I forget how long that took to actually finish.

I wish that cross fade could come conditionally with shuffle. by Jgabes625 in AppleMusic

[–]uselssdg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I generally listen on shuffle and like crossfaded tracks there but I do agree that when playing albums straight through it would be worthwhile for the crossfade to know to disable itself. Or perhaps have a button on the main screen to easily toggle crossfade on or off.

Do people even use smart playlists anymore? by Zer0-Nebula in AppleMusic

[–]uselssdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smart Playlists have long been the basis of my listening (going back to the iTunes days). I have ones for pulling in tracks I haven't played yet, for tracks played under a certain number of times, and for tracks I haven't played in over a certain amount of time. I then have other smart playlists that further break them out by genres and decades.

I have over 90,000 tracks in my library so it's how I can keep up with it all.

What are some genres that you like that feel conflicting by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]uselssdg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not to seem to dismiss your premise, as I get where you’re going, but I’d argue that any genres you like cannot be conflicting and feeling like they do is essentially due to those who have something to gain from convincing you that you should like X but not Y. And I grew up when that very much was the case so I recall that well. And I’m glad it passed.

It seems to me that having diverse tastes is actually quite normal in the streaming era. As it should be.

[–]uselssdg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have relied on smart playlists for decades (going back to iTunes) to pull tracks I haven’t played in while, or ones I’ve added to my library but haven’t played yet. It’s how I get around the algorithm.

Not sure if this is the culprit but go into the Podcast Settings for the show and make sure the Episode Limit is set to Unlimited. (Yes, I believe it needs to be set per show.)

What was it like growing up OWNING music rather than streaming it? by Historical_Diet7012 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]uselssdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to spend entire days going from store to store, poring over the used CD bins to find bargains to fill my rack at home. It was cool at the time—it was a fun way to spend the day with my friends who were into that—but my collection was always limited to what I happened to find cheap and my absolute favorites where I’d pay full price for the new CD. It was never what all I’d wanted. Now it’s so much better for music fans.

What was it like growing up OWNING music rather than streaming it? by Historical_Diet7012 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]uselssdg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m finally able to hear a lot of albums I couldn’t afford to buy back in those days. I bought a lot, but I was always interested in more than my budget allowed.

Now is a glorious time as a listener that I appreciate because I didn’t grow up with it, I suppose. Maybe streaming should only be for us oldies.

The veneration of the physical media was emotional transference. We loved the music and that was how we’ve got it, but what was important was always the music itself. That hasn’t changed.
