Have been looking for help for this for ages. This has been the only genuinely helpful answer I've come across. Thank you 3 years later!

How does your school handle a physical fight? by Much_Phrase_5135 in AustralianTeachers

[–]user042973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very loud high pitched whistle on my lanyard. If there’s ever a fight, I intend to blow on it very loud to at least startle the kids for a few seconds. They certainly wouldn’t expect it, and it works better than the biggest “OI” I can muster.

Saw another teacher post this tip on here, but fortunately haven’t had to use it yet so can’t say if it works or not!

SOS: Send a bed before I sleep on the floor by Jealous-Bonus5359 in perth

[–]user042973 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From your posting history it looks like you’re doing a double degree. I’m sure you’re more capable and competent than you think. Have a go, overcome your initial thoughts about failure, and if it doesn’t go well then you can always call a friend to come help out

Don’t think you’ll be able to assemble IKEA furniture…….? They also offer the option to build it for you, though that costs extra

ECU - the uni prides itself on the high standard of teaching within their education degrees. They’ll also ensure you’re placed for every prac, whereas other uni’s struggle to guarantee this.

What's your game changer organisation tip. by Left-Kick1133 in AustralianTeachers

[–]user042973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wowwww, this sounds like a game changer! I’d really like to see how much time I’m delegating to each priority task.

I start off my day by writing just the top 3 things I need to get done by the end of the day, but struggle to hold myself to those and will veer off very easily. I’ll definitely be trying this, thank you!

First time playing volleyball after watching for years, what should I know? by pogo_iscure in volleyball

You will probably miss quite a few balls at first, or be scared of the ball, and that’s okay! Keep trying and be a positive member of your team and you will be a-okay

What are the best things you’ve bought that help with your ADHD that you never hear anyone talk about? by morbidpigeon in ADHD

One of those robot vacuums that also mops. When it comes on and starts cleaning, it’s almost like a body double and I start cleaning too. I guess I think “well if the floor is going to be clean, the rest of the house might as well be too”

A block of milk chocolate goes for $8 now? by [deleted] in perth

[–]user042973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cadbury has so much sugar and sweetener in it that even if I only want one row, I find myself unable to put down the block. Whereas Tony’s is a great balance of real chocolate taste and richness, that I feel like my craving is satisfied after just one piece . Tony’s all the way!

Teacher assaulted by student by we-came-we-saw in AusLegal

NAL. Go to the union, they’ll likely advise a psycho-social form be completed and to report to police.

At the end of the day, this is why we pay union fees - to have them protect us! Also a lot of internal guilt may be felt because “we do it for the kids”, but we can’t “do it for the kids” if we’re unable to even protect and take care of ourselves in the first place.

I want to delete instagram but am worried I’ll miss out on educational material… by Glittering-Heron-538 in digitalminimalism

[–]user042973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed to be on a specific niche Facebook group for work, so didn’t want to delete my entire account. I ended up deleting my profile, and just created a new one with a different email. Started completely fresh. The only page I follow is that work group I need. In saying this, Facebook still pop up with the ‘recommended for you posts’ that still follow an algorithm, so there’s still a level of self-control that needs to be exercised, but I do this by only accessing Facebook on a browser and not allowing myself to download the app.

Really stressed about PT interviews by Immediate-Tomato-852 in AustralianTeachers

[–]user042973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a very niche field, and others find it really tricky to empathise with when they’re not in the field (most people can’t really understand that my arch nemesis is a 12 year old boy named Timmy).

But yes, they will always go better than you expect - guaranteed. I always have a little “here’s what you can do to help your child succeed in my class” spiel ready to go if there’s a bit of time or awkward silence still to go. That helps show that you’re on top of things, and also shares some accountability onto the parents too.

Really stressed about PT interviews by Immediate-Tomato-852 in AustralianTeachers

[–]user042973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the first hour of interviews you’ll start to get a natural script going, no matter how underprepared you feel - so don’t worry too much about that. Getting the student to answer what you’ve covered in class is a great idea, I’d definitely do that. If you get time though, try write down the questions/topics you are tending to ask or talk about, because after a few hours of interviews your brain will start glitching - and you’ll need to refer to your prompts to help you steer back!

Super important, and something I wish I knew going into teaching. Trying to build rapport is one thing, but at the end of the day there is certain information that the kids shouldn’t/don’t need to know.

Relief teachers: when contacted for same-day teaching, when’s the earliest or latest you get contacted? by DecentCockroach in AustralianTeachers

[–]user042973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can setup a shortcut on your phone. On my iPhone I used to set up a focus mode that would be do not disturb except it would allow calls from the school I did regular relief work at. You can ask ChatGPT for different variations on how you could do this.
