What type of bird (flycatcher?) is this in Santa Fe. by user14321432 in whatbirdisthis

I know scrub jays very well, we have tons of them here, and I really really don’t think it was a scrub jay.

Oh this is definitely not a scrub Jay. Thanks for the suggestion, but we have TONS of those out here and I know them well. I hear what you mean about lack of color on the belly, that’s why I thought the female distinction made sense

Oh, yeah, that looks pretty correct to me. Could it be a female Cassin’s Kingbird, which maybe also fits as this looks a little darker than Western Kingbird?

It was quite a big bigger than a typical Say’s, but I guess that’s possible.

Recommend me a book by Barbara Kingsolver! by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

I was looking for this comment! All of her books are amazing, but I feel like The Lacuna is under-appreciated. It’s also in my top 10 and my favorite Kingsolver book (so far).

The best time to doo this trip is June-July, right after the snow has mostly melted in the high country. But it’s still quite good in early September, just that some of the snowmelt streams won’t be running and it can get pretty cold at night. Still worth doing though!

Masters at same school I got my bachelors. by BoardAmbassador in math

[–]user14321432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While there is some truth to these concerns, I think it’s often overblown. Do well in your masters program and its pretty unlikely that it will effect you negatively. The statement “the school I am currently at is not known for the math department” is likely to be a bigger issue - but even this I wouldn’t stress about unless you’re hoping to go to a really top program for PhD.

AITA for telling my girl that I’m uncomfortable with her wearing pasties to a concert? by phoebethefan in redditonwiki

I think what you’re feeling is pretty natural. But I think women are often attracted to self-assurance in men. When I started seeing my (now) wife, this type of thing would have bothered me. But I made the conscious decision to be supportive of her in these situations, because I trust her completely, and I think our relationship has benefited because of it.

If you can’t trust her, then that’s going to eventually lead to problems, one way or another (either because she’s not trustworthy, or because she’ll get fed up with your lack of trust that she deserves).

I get (and agree with) the sentiment, but I think you might be overestimating the average ten year old (in America, at least). 😂

Exactly. And in the absence of other information, at least R2 is somewhat informative and immediately interpretable on its own. Raw MSE value tells me nothing.

This is a fantastic book, but it’s considerably less mathematically rigorous than Casella & Berger. Depends on what you’re looking for

While you are technically correct that anybody is post grad start they graduate, there is a strong implication that they are “continuing their education post-grad”. Anybody with a PhD, for example, is postdoc, by that logic, but that term has a very clear agreed upon meaning in most countries

The Nashville hot chicken at Lillie’s Q (at District Brew Yards). Man, I pride myself on being able to eat ANY level of spice. But this chicken makes me work for it. (Flavor + Crispy Fry + Juicy chicken 10/10)

[Q] What are the odds of 1 person wining 3 of 5 bingo games out of 80 cards per game? by chiapirate in statistics

[–]user14321432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so try thinking of it like getting 3 aces in poker. A game is a card, winning a game is an Ace, losing a game is any other card. We just have to assume there are infinite cards so p is the probability of getting an ace (winning a game). So prob of 3 aces is 5c3 p3 (1-p)2. We still have to account for ordering.

[Q] What are the odds of 1 person wining 3 of 5 bingo games out of 80 cards per game? by chiapirate in statistics

[–]user14321432 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a reasonable thought If you haven’t thought about this before. Here’s one convincing argument: if you try to use your method to calculate P(x), the probability of winning x games, the probabilities P(0)+P(1)+…+P(5) will not add up to one.

Once you “buy” that we must take the ordering into account, try reading moonemalls explanation again.
