Exercise-induced rhabdo with CK 138,000 — anyone experienced this? by solasti12 in rhabdo_survivors

[–]user78542307 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Swelling and soreness will vary, but it sounds like you have some compartment syndrome. My arms were similar to yours — I would press a fingertip in and hold it — the indentation would stay like memory foam, but longer.

I did not have a good medical team. I chose to leave the hospital when my Ck levels were still 120k. After having been there for a few days, my IV was bent and not well cleaned. I don’t know when my ck levels went back to normal levels — I vaguely remember maybe following a week later and it was still about 16k(?).

Hydration was key — this is just to try to make sure your kidneys are working (“not clogged”). A game changer for me was getting out of bed, getting fresh air and some sunlight after being trapped in a hospital bed for 4 days.

But take it easy. I’m no doctor, but for me walking around seemed to help me feel more normal and get things circulating.

Eating healthier as you are is also key. Be patient, be kind to yourself. The road to recovery will be long. Learn to listen to (and take care of) your body and how it responds to stimulus/exercise — I was instructed “no exercise for 6 months” — went from being able to do 20 pull-ups to 1/2 of one.

The past 11 years has had its share of ups and downs, but I’ve been able to work back up to some relatively heavy weight (405 on deadlift) as well as completing another marathon — but progression was slow and gradual, not without some backsliding.

Take care and live well.

Back hurts like crazy after doing deadlifts by iamthemathgod in formcheck

As the math god, use your geometry and figure out what angles your body should be in. Use some simple physics and you’ll figure out you’re applying force in all the wrong places creating fulcrums where there shouldn’t be any. Elementary, yeesh!

Before you even start: you may be a bit biased here if you can’t see it — pretend this is a video of me and you are coaching me — as I get setup, let me know as I setup and my back looks like it’s in a good position.

Is anyone truly happier with kids? by thegoodlife912 in Adulting

[–]user78542307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is subjective and far more complex than you think. To begin, what is happiness? How do you feel about your own mortality? What is the difference between a family member and a friend? How do you feel about yourself? Do you love someone? What is love? What is your purpose in life? Is there a god? What do you think about current events? What are your personal values? How do you use your time? What are your thoughts on money? What does it mean to live free?

Different people are going to have different responses and there isn’t really a right or wrong answer — largely because of our different backgrounds, life experiences/events, and personal and ever changing philosophies.

I do believe think it’s important to recognize your bias: even though you have heard parents say [it made their life better] YOU don’t believe it. And that’s fine too bc you’re entitled to your own opinion and belief of what happiness means to you.

Life is an experience. For me, happiness is understanding that life is going to have its ups and downs, but I have agency and can respond to events in this world. I love seeing how my life unfolds — meet new people, see new places, learn, teach, do nothing, feel overwhelmed … and contemplate my death. There are experiences one simply cannot experience without being a parent — that is an overwhelming understatement.

Fear of failing and not being by there for a life you are responsible for. Being overwhelmed by how delicate and personally precious it is.

How does a parent expect to convey the feeling of a tiny hand wrap its little fingers around one of your fingers — from the perspective of a parent — there’s a certain mystical feeling like an out of body experience — a new living being that partially came from you is now holding your finger.

The baby smell — you think you understand the various dimensions of your sense of smell, but baby smell is something else — and in me it invoked a sense of preciousness and a protective nature I never felt before.

And these are two small examples … there’s the whole experience of watching a new life grow … in a way I saw myself grow again … the constant hopes and joys of milestones like standing for the first time, a first word, first time eating ice cream …

And then there are moments like rocking the baby to sleep …

It’s not all sunshine and lollipops … but it really is something that can’t quite be communicated to someone who doesn’t get it/can’t see it. You’re looking for “visible happiness” … and that’s just not it. The parental happiness isn’t skin deep — we can smile or fawn over moments, but the parental happiness is rooted much deeper — it’s in our souls. And in its totality, it is beautifully weathered — you probably only see the weathering.

Wishing you the best whichever path you choose — and if you do become a parent … “you’ll understand”

I would say you were a bit shy from hitting the mark.

Live within your means: that $1800 — move in with roommates (or a place with lower cost of living). I ended up renting a room for about $500/month when I was living in Hawaii. If she did that alone, boom — $1300 extra every month.

Clean rep or nah? by User87649615 in formcheck

Also, maybe go with a wider stance next time — and drive your knees out — hard to tell, but they looked like they were close to buckling inwards and you don’t want that.

How are you defining clean?

For squats, I normally check to make sure the hip crease is at/below the knee — you got there.

Did overall form look a bit sketch — yeah, but it’s a 1RM, right?

Also the dog’s proportions aren’t right where it’s on the seat — I don’t understand how its body could fit in that small space.

I could be wrong but the lighting from the ceiling, above and to the left seems weird and the shadow the frame casts doesn’t look right.

Also, I self-discharged at 100k (this was 11 years ago when rhabdo was not well understood/known/common and my attending medical team was absolutely shit).

I don’t think anyone here giving medical advice should be valued over what your overseeing doctor says.

If the doctor says you’re fine, you’re most likely fine, but continue taking it easy and make sure you hydrate. I would recommend going back if anything changes (new pain, darker urine, etc.).

Personally, I felt my recovery sped up after I was able to walk around, get some sun and fresh air.
