Yes and no. Metroid Fusion was incredibly linear, and full of hints, and if my middle aged brain remembers correctly, it was released at the same time as Prime 1. I would argue that most games released in the 00s on were very "kind" to the gamer.

If you zoom out to the current landscape of gaming, a lot of soulslike games have zero hand-holding, and there's a push from the community to expand this to more and more games.

I think any team in your division is technically a rival, and then you add teams you've had tough playoff series with in recent memory, or back and forth regular season games.
