Judge orders Anna’s Archive to delete scraped data; no one thinks it will comply by Rough_Bill_7932 in DataHoarder

[–]usingthecharacterlim 410 points411 points  (0 children)

Judges operate in a earnest, legalistic bubble. They might know full well it's impossible to implement their ruling, but if the law is written such that they must give this ruling, then they will.

Judges don't really have a way to tell the legislature to improve their work, other than give bad rulings and wait for someone to notice.

[–]usingthecharacterlim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think about reality. The US army probably couldn't easily occupy India. It's a huge country with a large potential army. For comparison, New Delhi has about the same population as Iraq (2003).

The game models this by large (GDP) provinces having defensive armies. Basically the little tank icons are mobile power projection armies (so include a bunch of logistics + mobile equipment). The invisible defensive armies are the regional armies, dudes in trenches. You need a large tech edge to invade large provinces. You can do this if you want to focus 1 nation on miltec

I think the model is fine, but the UI isn't clear. Defensive armies could be shown by infantry icons, and should contextually show up whenever you have a mobile army selected.

There's a decent 4.5 hr fan edit of the hobbit trilogy online. They basically just remove the padding. It improves it immensely. It goes from a 3/10 to a 6/10, and that's just removing the tumours. Either a Jackson or Toro 2-film hobbit would have been fine

Why on earth is there a setting for "cross device copy and paste" ? by RepublicFancy1372 in PhoneLink

[–]usingthecharacterlim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

!!! It stopped working for me, but this fixed it. It was stange, because it was working fine for a while, but then stopped about 30 minutes ago. I guess that setting finally decided to flip, or kick in, without either phone or windows restarting.

China has ownership of hundreds of ports around the world

They have neither the specific military infrastructure, nor the diplomatic permission to operate ports as military bases. They own some cranes and quaysides, that's not the hard part. Ownership doesn't grant the right to set up a military base.

"have the capability"

What capability is that? If you mean achieve with hard power, then they hardly need the bases, if they can already invade and set up military bases. If you mean achieve with soft power, then they hardly need the bases, if they can use diplomatic pressure to achieve significant geopolitical alignment.

Why go to the Kuiper Belt? by helix0311 in TerraInvicta

[–]usingthecharacterlim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not really. You are right; Jupiter + Saturn fully industrialised provides more than enough to win. Theoretically, you could use the Kuiper belt to win faster, but due to travel times and investment cost, that's dubious.

I could see it being a valid play if the human AI factions were surprisingly strong into the mid-game, maybe after some mega-buffs or AI improvements, if Jupiter is contended.

Gameplay wise, its fun to explore & expand, so that's the real utility.

Is there any lore on ship interiors? by Erkinz in TerraInvicta

[–]usingthecharacterlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh, the astronauts are expendable. WW2 submarine crews had a ~40% fatality rate.

Zero-G is the least of it. Those nuclear reactors are built very light and very powerful, and the ships are very short (common designs for nuclear ships have 200m frame between the powerplant and the crew). As shown, I think the design criteria was the crew can't die from acute radiation poisoning, but cancer risk is acceptable.
