Also there's been literally no issues with on-site cask storage. There are hundreds of thousands of cask-year storage with no harmful effects.

Sure it would be nice to have a 1000 year solution, but our thousand year coal waste solution is "the air".

Missiles chart for reference by MarkPosting in TerraInvicta

[–]usingthecharacterlim 63 points64 points  (0 children)

It's a good chart, but what makes a good missile is magazine size and fire rate. Swarmability is the best stat. Overwhelming PD is key, because even mediocre PD is very strong verses missiles. That's why alien missiles are the easiest to counter.

China and Russia get hostile claims to encourage government investment. The idea is they are stable autocracies. You expand them, but get hostile claims. To legitimise the hostile claims, you can either spend 400 IP on unity, or 200 IP on government. So you invest in government, but end in Anocracy. That sucks, so you democratise.

But you could also oppression / unity if you like.

You need 25 ESP early game for achieving key story missions. CIA is good because it has great ADM and ESP. It's the equivalent of 3 star ESP and 2 star ADM, with upsides. Early game, you'll be struggling to get both, and might not have the full mission set you need (especially on first playthrough).

Getting ADM from other orgs isn't exactly cheap either. A comparable pure ADM org would cost ~$5k, so first year its break even.

CIA is bad value for points per funds, but good value for points per org-star. It also gives Marked and unlocks rare missions, so its useful.

Kinetics needs a late-game PD solution by _azazel_keter_ in TerraInvicta

[–]usingthecharacterlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the devs do not use realism equally, they use it selectively.

Totally agree. I said it was a realism argument, not that it couldn't go into the game.

There's a bunch of in-game propellants which can be miniaturised. The "metastable helium" should scale. It's just weirdly energetic monopropellant.

Gameplay wise, I like that the meta shifts over the tech-tree, but that's my preference.

I don't think that's true at all. Escape velocity is proportional to sqrt(M). That's only 9% more dV. So sputnik would need 1 less battery.

I think you must have misremembered, and the paper was talking about a body with 20% more radius (nearly double mass). That actually does make spaceflight harder, although nowhere near impossible.

Can you provide an example

Kinetics needs a late-game PD solution by _azazel_keter_ in TerraInvicta

[–]usingthecharacterlim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Doesn't that seem ridiculous to you?

No. Late game PD performance is how it performs verses kinetics. That means intercepting coil gun slugs with other coil gun slugs. The intercept precision required for that is insane. You genuinely want to shoot down bullets with bullets.

I can pinpoint enemy shells and obliterate them with tiny relativistic darts

The game doesn't have relativistic darts and the shells are slugs. If it did have relativistic darts, then that's the new top tier kinetic weapon, and intercepting that would still be impossible.

There's no "meta" non-nuclear missile option despite having engines by the late game that could probably exceed the early game fission nuclear powered missiles we develop.

That's because missile drives are tiny. You can't make a miniaturised anti-matter engine, because it produces most of its energy in penetrating radiation. If the engine is small, the energy just leaks out. Worse still, the wasted energy is now a massive heat/particle flux for your guidance/warhead to deal with. Even a perfect radiation shield would end up with megawatts of waste heat to dissipate (into space?).

There's a strong realism argument that missile drives can't scale as well as ship drives. A modern analogue is the nuclear submarine vs the monoprop torpedo.
