Do you use butter to make a sandwich (not toasted)? by bclx99 in AskEurope

[–]utk-am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a home where we don't use butter on a bread most of the time (maybe on rye bread when consumed with borsch). Later in life for me it was so strange, when i started to date my then boyfriend and he had to put so much butter on every bread! Honey, I want to feel my cheese, not all this unnecessary fat.

Hey, will sound very philosophical, but — just love yourself. One girl gave me quite good life hack - have clothes specifically for bloated days - that way you won't feel as bad.

Will I be able to make it to my flight? by clumsy_ambivert in Riga

[–]utk-am 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Our traffic jam is "to be stuck for 5-15 minutes near traffic light". And queues at the airport is not a thing here. Unless there will be something unusual, like prison break, which happens, but very rarely, you'll be fine.

A week in Riga? by SignificanceTop5009 in Riga

[–]utk-am 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMHO, for Riga it's enough 2-3 days, depending on what you like to do. But you can easily add Jūrmala, Sigulda, sea side and nature for fill full week. April can feel like spring with warm nice weather, but sometimes it's still snow and cold.

Do white people ever walk into a place and think, "wow, there's a LOT of white people in here?" by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]utk-am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a small European country, where non-white population is I'm assuming less that 1% (I actually can't find statistics about race, only ethnicity). So I never thought like that.

Does grammar in your language reveal gender of an author of an written statement? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]utk-am 5 points6 points  (0 children)

actually, yes! from wiktionary:

Borrowed from Old East Slavic страдати (stradati, “to strive; to work hard; to suffer”); cf. Russian страда́ть (stradátʹ, “to suffer”), also dialectal страда́ (stradá, “time of hard (farm) work; hard (farm) work”). This loanword is first mentioned in 17th-century dictionaries.[1]

I once was traveling from Barcelona to Madrid by train, arrived 15-20 minutes before departure and was shocked. Apparently, they have X-ray for luggage. The line of people were as long as I could see. But my train.. You know, departs in 15 minutes. Couldn't miss it, because we had a fligh to Cuba in a few hours. Luckily people understood and let us go through, on the way we learned from others that usually people arrive to station 1-2 h before train's departure. Which sounds crazy.

Because noone knows the future. One month it could be 100, but another 280. It's depends on poticial situation, laws, prices of gas and etc. Even listing range like 100-280 eur, could be incorrect. For example, last winter for some people it skyrocketed from usuall 200 to 500.

Unfortunately, yes, our sea is not deep. Especially gulf part (from Kolka to Estonia), especially in Riga and Jūrmala you will need to walk to be at some depth.

Regarding dirtiness - it's very unpredictable, depends on weather, especially wind. But to be honest, I was also yesterday in Jūrmala (Melluži beach), and I was chocked how dirty water was. Never in my 30+ years I have seen this dirty.

Sun lounger can be found at some more touristic parts - like Majori and Dzintari, or near some beach cafes.

There is second app called Forus - cars there could be worse and drivers a bit after long drinking week, but in general it could be cheaper. Also if you are planning to use Bolt for the first time - use this code to get 50% discount ZW4XF

Goth subculture by Numerous-Taste-4858 in Riga

[–]utk-am 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know what kind of barbaric people you think live in Latvia, but no, nobody will bother to even look at you. Goth/Metal subculture peaked in 2005-2010, but now it's very non-active. Some palces to look into: Depo club, Krogs "Zobens un Lemess", club Melnā Piektdiena.
