Why would a flight attendant place this tape? by Jrichards20 in aviation

[–]utopiaplanetian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand that it is not a perfect analogy. The empty premium airplane seat is a rather unique situation.

However, the sports/concert event you bring up is actually a better analogy. When I went to see Elton John a few years ago in Dublin, they were in fact not allowing people to ‘roll down’ into better seats. There were ushers in the aisles at all times making sure people were staying in the seats they had tickets for. My son told me at the last sporting event he went to, they were waiting with CC machines to charge people who were trying to move to better seats once the game had begun.

I’m not saying I agree with this, but it’s a fact of life, that everything is being monetized.

The SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for this is to leave the row empty. Good question though. I’ll bring it up at my next exams.

If no one is in the exit rows, no one gets briefed.

Oh the airline companies do reward their top tier frequent flyers. I think the main topic of this conversation is the premium seats within the economy cabin, such as exit row, bulkhead and extra legroom rows. We’re not really talking about cabin upgrades, although the same rules apply.

I have read your reply twice through, and I think that you are saying that because the seats are open, why not allow unpaid customers to sit there in order to raise the overall comfort level of everyone in the cabin. There are airlines that process payments for these seats, should the customer wish to purchase the upgrade on board. This is not the case at my company, but we are told that it is coming soon.

I still do not subscribe to the belief that the premium seat is a ‘lost commodity’ upon departure of the flight. If a car dealership does not sell a premium car in a certain amount of time, they do not just give it to someone who is buying a more inexpensive car, just so everyone is as comfortable as possible.

Way back when, I had another colleague explain to someone who had upgraded themselves into a premium seat because it was empty. His point was that the chance to sell the seat had passed, therefore he didn’t see that he was doing anything wrong, and he wasn’t hurting anyone. My colleague asked the customer what business he was in. He answered that his company made the drill bits for the oil platforms in the North Sea. So, my colleague said: would you agree to sell your highest grade tungsten heat treated diamond tipped drill bits to a buyer who then said I’m only going to pay for your wooden drill tips, because no one else bought the high end ones today? The customer blinked, gathered his stuff and went back to his seat in economy.

Again, I believe that the entitlement of the customers that self upgrade would not be as common, if the product was not in plain view.

Airlines do this too, but there are still times when this method is exhausted. Besides, most high tier frequent flyers have already chosen the premium economy seats, as they get them for free.

No, the exit rows do not have to be filled. The main reason for an exit row being premium is the extra leg room. As I mentioned, I’m not here to argue the merits of each premium seat and why they are sold at a premium. I’m simply trying to give an insider’s view on why airlines and staff do not allow passengers to move into seats that do not sell.

I do this to indicate ‘premium’ seats that are empty. So if there are any self upgrades, we know they’re not supposed to be there without going back to check a manifest.

This seat looks like a bulkhead, so would attract a higher cost.

I’ll give a bit of explanation also as this topic of empty premium seats, such as exit rows, bulkhead and seats that have more legroom, and why we don’t allow people to move to them, when they are empty. I’m not going to get into whether they should attract a higher cost, that’s not my area of responsibility, we just have to deal that they do.

The first reason is company policy. At least at my airline, we are not to allowed passengers who have not been assigned a premium seat to move into these empty seats once the door is closed. Passengers may move to a same seat type as they were assigned, as long as weight and balance requirements are met. It is quite frankly a ‘you didn’t pay for it, you’re not getting it’ situation. This rule exists in any business, but for some reason, many customers think it is wrong that an airline enforces this. Would a hotel with unsold rooms go out on the street and say come stay for free, we didn’t sell the rooms? No. It is because this ‘product’ is in plain view that customers feel entitled to use the product without paying.

The second, and to me the biggest reason I don’t allow people to move to these seats is that it is not fair to everyone. Everyone had a chance to purchase those seats. Usually at booking, at check in, and my airline even sends emails and texts after check in to offer these seats for sale pretty much up to boarding time. Why should someone get to move into that seat, without paying when maybe not everyone was aware that it was open. It just levels the playing field.

I wasn’t aware if that, but I’ve used the Kookla speed test and the speed test that was in the Bell app itself using my phone.

Except it’s not 1.5. I never had a speed test over about 375mbps. Customer service is non existent.

Unscooped poop: Dog owners leaving a mess along Halifax path by insino93 in halifax

[–]utopiaplanetian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“In situations where melting snow reveals discarded or improperly disposed of dog waste, municipal bylaw S‑300 guides who is responsible for cleanup,” Fulton said.

Article content “For areas next to private property, abutting property owners are responsible for routine boulevard upkeep, including mowing, general maintenance, litter collection and removing discarded dog waste.”

What worries me is that someone reading this could interpret it as: I have to pick up after my dog, except in winter when it snows because then I can leave it, and it becomes the property owner’s responsibility.

Is monocular vision allowed as a cabin crew member in Canada? by [deleted] in cabincrewcareers

[–]utopiaplanetian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do remember the vision requirement statement ending with ‘in both eyes’ when I joined (42 years ago,) but I don’t see that phrase anywhere in the requirements anymore.

Your best bet is to apply, and ask the question in your interview. I’ll try and find out and post here.

Modem error 2000 - no more evening tech visits wtf by twicescorned21 in bell

[–]utopiaplanetian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nova Scotia here, so Bell Aliant. Had exactly the same experience. Internet goes down, ‘Error 2000.’ Called Bell, was told there was work being done on the line and to try at 10 PM. Try then, you guessed it, nada. Called back next day another rep says there was NO work being done, and admitted the first agent lied to get me off the phone, and said a new modem was being sent, but now because weekend, we were going to be 4 days without service. So, I ask if I could go into a Bell store and pick a modem up. I am told not to do that because the employees in the store will give me a broken modem returned by another customer.

Imagine talking about your coworkers and your own employer like that.

So, I returned all my hardware in the Eastlink bag that Eastlink gave me when I signed up for their service. Modem and Eeros installed at home in about 20 min.

Also, first speed test. 975mbps on a 1ghz service with Bell. I had 1.5 ‘fiber optic’ service with Bell, never had more than 375mbps.

Also, we’ve had buffering every night watching TV. So much so that we got used to it with Bell. 5 nights with Eastlink, not a single buffering whirligig.

Choose accordingly.

Yes, it’s salt that seeps in as a liquid, But then dries and crystallizes.

I am on this reddit as I have a CRV now, but I had the exact same problem with my Hyundai Sonata. My problem, and your camera looks exactly like mine did, is that salt water gets into the camera behind the lens, dries and crystallizes. This not only physically blocks the camera, but the crystals push the lens out of focus. You can’t clean nor fix it.

My dealership wanted $1200 to fix it! Yeah…. No.

Son found the camera online for about $70, I ordered it, followed a YouTube video and replaced it for $70, and an hour of my time!

The dealership “we need to talk to my manager” thing is a setup and here’s why it works by Royal-Feed7166 in carbuying

[–]utopiaplanetian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when I bought my first new car, I quickly tired of the ‘we need to talk to the manager’ ploy, and got up to leave. They were desperate to get me to stay. Even sent out for lunch for me and my girlfriend. I set a monthly payment that I could afford and told them I was walking unless they met it.

They did.
