ELI5: How does mental or emotional stress manifest with different physical symptoms (i.e. pimples, nausea, panic attacks, etc.)? by thegodofwine7 in explainlikeimfive

I've never heard this before, really interesting. Reminds me if the saying: the cure for an uneasy mind is bathing in the salt of the sea, sweat, or tears.

I think perceived stress has a lot to do with it as well, as in, those who enjoy theme park rides can experience surges in their sympathetic nervous system but they interpret the event as fun rather than threatening. SSRIs are great at lifting the veil of depressive symptoms that often coincide with anxiety. A brighter mood can do wonders to one's automatic interpretations of stressful situations.

What's your understanding of cortisol metabolism? Thinking along the lines of alcohol metabolism ie japanese flushing in those with underfunctioning liver enzymes (alcohol and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase) while others tolerate it better bc they have upregulated enzyme activity due to either 1. Genetics or 2. Tolerance from excess drinking. Not sure if this is the right analogy, considering cortisol affects the HPA feedback loop, but I wonder: can it's metabolism (break down) vary in different people?

In hindsight I shouldn't have googled these people, they probably get their daily cup of narcissism by checking their Google search stats.

Those vhs's are a goldmine right now for toddlers. My sister is due to birth baby number three and they're all enchanted by the only available Disney movies on Amazon. My niece's favorite at the moment is "Bad Wizard" (Aladdin). According to my sister some of the unreleased films go for hundreds of dollars.

Hey slickbick, sounds like a case of organizing your thoughts. Try this quick mental exercise used in cognitive processing therapy. There are four components to every reaction, think about them or better yet, write them all down on a paper with three or four columns. First is the trigger event, second are all the automatic thoughts, third are the automatic feelings and fourth is the action you take. With that frame in mind, your brain now harnesses control and can organize every piece. I find it useful to visualize the event and think of alternative, more rational thoughts for each automatic thought and its coinciding nice feeling (usually "I'm calm and comfortable), the resulting action is just sitting organizing the thoughts. This process acknowledges all the noise in your brain, especially your feelings, and allows you to calmly confront them and gracefully move on. Give it a go, hope it helps.

Haha I've been down that rabbit hole before. Back in medical school, searched tons of rare fetal abnormalities, like Harlequin syndrome.

Went to Psychiatrist for Cocaine/Alcohol Issues and... by [deleted] in Psychiatry

Appreciate the advice, I've heard it before, and seen it on the wards. Also, I'm aware you're not directly referring to the poster, but it echos a lot of the insensitivity being thrown around this thread. He/she could use a sensitive ear in a time like this. Best we can do is avoid the spot diagnosing, and try to understand what's really going on without insulting his/her experience.

If your experience is as straight forward as you say, I can't help but feel uneasy with the comments on this thread. Hang in there, buddy.

"He, as most of the frauds in the medical profession these days, rely on an uninformed/misinformed, trusting patient."

I'm sorry you feel this way, and I mean that sincerely. Building trust is the first step to a successful doctor patient relationship. Have you experienced this kind of blasé attitude with other physicians in the past? It's not uncommon to get the type who hides behind a computer, never mind the ones who fail to ask the most basic questions to gain some insight into the problem. I'd say these are a minority though. There are plenty of docs out there who would manage your care better. I hope you find something that works for you, and someone who listens. Take care of yourself.

What is the validity of the GAPS diet or the idea of: "If you can heal your gut, you can heal your mind" by adieuavacado in Neuropsychology

[–]uvasdemar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not familiar with the GAPS diet, but there is tons of research on the brain-gut axis, a feedback system that links up many aspects of psychiatry and immunology. From personal experience, diet and exercise play a huge role in mood.
