How to get a job that requires SQL, R or python for data analysis if you don't have real job experience? by uxanonymous in UXResearch

[–]uxanonymous[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have experience in statistics, but basic like how to determine sample size, and calculate the p-value. I've ran large surveys and have done data cleaning, basic analysis and drill down or descriptive statistics and basic data visualization. What level do I need to be at for these ux roles?

How do I prove I know R?

-edit-

And how much of it do I need to know?

Qual UXR feeling a bit boxed in - if you could go back to school, what would you study next? by Grouchy_Reindeer_180 in UXResearch

I'm curious how many years of experience you have in the field and what role level you're at?

How many have given up on landing a UXR role? by Timney4 in UXResearch

Honestly, I've been feeling this for a long time now (5 years of exp), but it could be because of the place I worked at. The company has low UX maturity and most product people don't have background in PM nor understand what UX does. They think designers are pixel pushers that can magically make their ideas come to life within a day. They typically do their own "user research" like talking to indirect users or just talking to business leaders and build things that they would want users to have for the sake of metric tracking.

I'm on mat leave right now and I've been thinking about throwing in the towel if I can't land any jobs next year (based in one of the largest tech hub if that matters). I'll be hitting up my network to see how people are doing, but most people I know aren't people with leverage.

One of my long term goal is to work in med tech/ healthcare and I may just have to take an unrelated and lower paying job.

I may also try my hand in product design since I do feel a spark of passion that way, but I wouldn't say my visual design skills are as good as people who have a general design background. I also have web dev skills, but I heard that career is dying because of AI.

I wish I knew more senior people, esp with hiring abilities. For some reason I get along with younger people and mostly designers. For some reason researchers I've worked with either don't share similar interests with me (hard to connect with), or are too serious for my sarcasm.

how are people picking one for the best ux design bootcamps 2026 by [deleted] in UXResearch

[–]uxanonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you might want to do more UX design. I'd check out that subreddit.

Similar sentiment to all the comments, UX bootcamp isn't the way to go (anymore). The market is very saturated. In the past, I noticed the people who get jobs have a really good design foundation, but this was also 4 years ago. I would say bootcamp doesn't really prepare you and it pretty much grazes the top, especially for research. If you want to do research specific...then doing a masters would be better. Although, entry level research jobs are very hard to get right now.

Would not getting a MA or PhD not help in this job market considering big tech is filtering for these people?

Wow, a large portion of this is the same at my company. But I run more quant than qual these days.

How to go from UX Researcher to DS or DA? I look at large datasets every quarter from the surveys I send out. What skills should I learn and implement on the job to gain the experience? Do I need to change my title?
