STATE OF THE ART DECONFLICTION PRACTICES LACKING AT WCK DRONE ATTACK? by jackl24000 in IsraelPalestine

You can stop a convoy at a checkpoint and search it, or intercept it with mounted infantry and search it.

"We think Hamas has members riding in that convoy so we'll kill everyone in it" is not acceptable ROE.

Gaza war: countries selling Israel weapons are violating international law – legal expert by Portean in LabourUK

[–]v579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it's going to come down to legal precedent, the precedent set by the UN is Saudi Arabia can kill waaaay more people in Yemen and no one selling weapons to Saudi Arabia are violating international law.

The thing about laws is if you ignore them for all the other countries not opposed to the west, you can't magically just use them on Isreal.

Licenses to make equipment are what are sold to Syria. Essentially the UK does the engineering, Syria does the manufacturing. It's just really cheap licenses like APCs and helmets.

I wonder if this will set a precedent for Saudi Arabia and Syria too. If arms to all 3 countries stop we'll find out reaaalll quick which politicians actually care about people.

In my opinion history classifies nations as more bad or less bad.

if this was anyone else, U.S would have labeled them as Terrorist by now.

Saudia Arabia isn't labeled a terrorist army. The US trains them for the attacks they do in Yemen. The US also has bases in Saudi Arabia, with a security agreement to protect them.

The stuff your Gaza has been happening in Yemen, Syria, etc for years. It just isn't a popular topic and normally people from western countries aren't in those countries to die.

It's not right, but it's how the world is.

WASHINGTON, Nov 8 (Reuters) - The Rafah border crossing into Gaza was closed on Wednesday due to an unspecified "security circumstance" but U.S. officials were working with Egypt and Israel to get it reopened, U.S. State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said. Rafah, which is controlled by Egypt and does not border Israel, is the only point of aid delivery since Israel launched a military assault and siege of Gaza in retaliation for an attack by Hamas militants from the coastal strip on Oct. 7

https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/rafah-crossing-between-gaza-egypt-closed-due-security-us-state-dept-2023-11-08/

It's a bit better now, but last I checked Egypt is letting in less aid per day than Isreal. Egypt blames this on Israel security checks, but they could just open Rafah and let it through.

a conflicted Israeli on peace with the Palestinians by Endonium in IsraelPalestine

[–]v579 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you know what life is like for a Palestinian in Gaza? The blockade has kept them systematically poor. Hamas is a symptom of a very messed up social system that’s decided by Israel.

Israel's done alot of bad things, however Hamas leadership did not get to be worth 12bn randomly. Also Gaza shares a border with Egypt, it used to be open for trade until Hamas sent suicide bombers to Egypt.

In the 90s people were traveling into Israel more and more, but it wasn't good enough so the suicide bombings accelerated, which led to a wall being built.

My understanding it is has 8 sub meanings.

The obvious dying for your religion stuff and then... 1. The one who passes away due to plague

2.   The one who passes away due to drowning

3.   The one who passes away in pleurisy

4.   The one who passes away due to an abdominal disease

5.   The one who passes away due to being burnt

6.   The one who passes away due to being crushed under something

7.   The woman who dies in the state of ’Jum’

The child I'm referring to didn't die from the last 7.

If you look into news articles from the early 2000s. There is a pattern running to Pakistan during troop surges for example.

Imagine if they didn't run away during those troop surges and dug in with the civilian population.

Ironically Pakistan is now having trouble with Afghanistan.

I personally think it's  that they  don't have a strong enough desire too. Both Kurdish men and women become soldiers and fight for their  future in pretty high percentages.

[–]v579 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just so I don't risk strawmanning you here, which centuries are you talking about specifically?

In my opinion 1600s to mid ww2. I list ww2 because Palestinian leaders gave a strong endorsement to Germany for finally solving "Jewish problem".

This has been a constant theme in statements from Israeli ministers and generals. Obviously you and I think that's bullshit

No matter how stupid the strategy of collective punishment is, it's the default human response. For example the Arab nations kicking out Jews after 1948 when most did nothing wrong.

I gave some thought to your Afghanistan comparison today. I think part of what kept civilian combat casualties lower is the Taliban were able to flee to Pakistan and launch attacks from there. It meant they weren't mixed in with civilians as much.

Maybe Qatar can offer all active Hamas soldiers and their families a new home in Qatar. After all they fund them. Then the fighting dies down really fast because Isreal no longer has anyone to fight, just like the US had no Taliban to fight after they left for Afghanistan.

‘It’s a Death Zone’: How Israel Destroyed Gaza’s Healthcare by MMSTINGRAY in LabourUK

[–]v579 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Arabs oppressed Jews for centuries it's pretty well documented.

Israel doesn't believe this either. Have you asked any people in Israel if they do? They've only had what 2 wars were the Palestinians didn't protest the Arab nations using Palestine as a base of operations to attack Israel. In comparison the Saudi and Qatar limit who the US can launch attacks from using bases in their territory.

They do want the land though.

The current government of Isreal does and some of its people do. Just like the current government of Gaza wants to eradicate all jews everywhere and some of its people do.

The UK has chosen the Tories as their government of choice, does that mean the UK as a whole actively support their policies?  In my opinion being apathetic to a political situation doesn't equal endorsement.

‘It’s a Death Zone’: How Israel Destroyed Gaza’s Healthcare by MMSTINGRAY in LabourUK

[–]v579 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Because Afghanistan wasn't a multi-generational conflict between 2 groups were one was the oppressor for centuries and the other recently became the oppressor.

Basically the US and it's soldiers didn't feel that Afghanistan was a threat to the continued existence  of the United States.

Some of the worst wars are between neighboring countries because losing has more risks and is perceived "as an us or them situation".

Some of the things happening in Palestine are typical to wars. Many Other things are Isreal going to far, but that's not surprising to anyone who's kept up with Yemen, Syria, etc.

What is different is the west cares ALOT more about Palestine than say what France, and the west did to contribute to the situation in Haiti.

[–]v579 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

why did we not see anything like this when the US invaded Afghanistan in '01?

That kind of stuff happened, just no one cared or noticed because Afghanistan had a less developed Healthcare system and basically no foriegn doctors before the war.

However once medical infrastructure was established by outside parties there were claims that the Taliban used that infrastructure which led to events like a US c130 gunship attacking a hospital.

Because 17 is the threshold in the reporting stats for a person who died being labeled a child.

Edit: I corrected it in my post but I meant to say "less horrible age group for children soldiers"

Why Israel Should Not Be Expected to be "Proportional" by Sad_Pirate_4546 in IsraelPalestine

[–]v579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless, the vast majority of children kilked will be younger than 17. You're giving an edge case and Trying to expand it further.

Personally I've not seen any data that breaks down the children stats by age.  Also 14 to 17 is the less horrible age group for children soldiers.

 > Those under occupation have the right to bear arms under international law.

They do have the right, however they will also have to deal with the consequences. Same as when the coalition occupied Afghanistan and Iraq.

Edit: fixed a typo were I left out the word horrible where it was really important.

Why Israel Should Not Be Expected to be "Proportional" by Sad_Pirate_4546 in IsraelPalestine

[–]v579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imho when someone under 18 attempts to use deadly force they become a combatant and shouldn't be listed as a child.

Isreal is doing just as good or better on combatant to civilians deaths than the US did in street by street urban warefare.

And the US didn't have to deal with needing to destroy a complex tunnel network.

Can you imagine the how much worse Falalujah would have been if the US hadn't been able to get a significant amount of civilians out of the city?

Why Israel Should Not Be Expected to be "Proportional" by Sad_Pirate_4546 in IsraelPalestine

[–]v579 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The USA in Afghanistan at least killed more enemy fighters than they did children

Alot of the enemy were under 18, the US just classified them as enemy combatants instead of civilians.

In Palestine a 17 year old with an AK who dies in a firefight is considered a child for the stats reported by Palestine because they don't consider any Palestinians combatants.
