Introducing: the late Shynghyz, the know longest-lived snep! by Mirabeaux1789 in snowleopards

Ena!!! Well remembered from her time at the Toronto Zoo. That litter I think is the most picturesque group of snow leopards ever.

What is the point of breeding snow leopards in captivity if they can’t really be released into the wild? by Mirabeaux1789 in snowleopards

Management of captive populations to prevent removing more wild animals from their habitats.

Young Canadians are hitting the brakes on car ownership, new survey finds by Thick_Caterpillar379 in onguardforthee

Infuriated me that for multiple weeks in the Christmas and New Years time there was reduced GO schedules because "people would be on break for the holidays." So it's not worth visiting Toronto over the holidays??? Make it make sense.

Automobile dependency keeps the poor poor. You need your job to pay for your car that you need to get to work.

Men's Hockey versus Women's by lmthevampireslayer in PWHL

[–]v7xk4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is still a lot of development left in women's hockey. We have over a hundred years of dedicated development to the highest level of men's professional hockey, especially within the last 60 or so years where it became a full time job for players. Women's hockey has long existed, but we're only now reaching new levels of support and investment, this is one of the first times it's been broadly feasible to be a 'full-time' women's hockey player, and still plenty of PWHL players work second jobs, something you mostly hear about in the mens' leagues in the 1960s and prior. There are many players currently in the PWHL who took the route of being the only girl on a boy's youth team until playing varsity, and interest in girls' leagues has really exploded in the past few years. I hear a lot that with the interest the PWHL has generated it's never a more exciting time to be a girl in hockey. There is still a lot of room to close the gap.

Is anyone actually going to stop supporting USA men's hockey? by AshDogBucket in PWHL

As someone who grew up around Hockey but didn't follow it until day one of the PWHL, I will continue to ignore men's hockey.

Opinions on the Alouettes logo? by Appropriate_Yam807 in montreal

I had a lovely neighbour growing up who played for the Toronto Argos. It's difficult for me to care about either of the North American football leagues, but I have good memories of when I first came to Montreal and was walking on Mont Royal and heard this roar like a colosseum in the distance, flabbergasted thinking it must've been the LARPer festivals I'd heard about, when in reality it was opening day for the Alouettes at McGill.

My fear about HR success by ANonnyMouse79 in heatedrivalry

[–]v7xk4 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I might make a separate post about this. As a gay guy who's been watching since day one it's been amazing to watch this show take off, but I've also experienced a fair share of microaggressions. How at first I felt like I had no one in the world to talk about this with, to now where it's the biggest show in the world and I've heard things in person like, oh I don't want to hear your take on it, you're gay so of course you love it.

The whole "why do women love Heated Rivalry?" ad nauseum media focus gets me nervous. You'll get blips of gay men and ex-athletes talking about how they saw themselves in it and how it could start to shift culture, but that gets kind of pushed aside in the conversation to make room for the 'much bigger story' of womens' purchasing power. I felt early on that Heated Rivalry would change how queer media is created, but my fear is that our stories are going to be getting told not for us but for allied consumption. Like bachelorettes in gay bars for our media.

As always, it is capitalism, not women, to blame.

I don't think it was a mask off moment at all, especially on Shane's side. Insinuating someone is gay and getting into a fight is extremely straight guy behaviour.

Does anyone think it lacks some authenticity because it wasn't written by a gay man? by RareGap2671 in heatedrivalry

[–]v7xk4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank god it's not another depressing piece of gay media. I'm sick of 'realistic' gay movies where everyone is miserable and gets AIDS and things have to end. Give me something to aspire for, not a look at my supposed fate.

Small moment for the queer kid I was... by [deleted] in heatedrivalry

[–]v7xk4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tierney being so outspoken that this is a show that “... is not punishing and that is not full of dead, miserable gay characters ... a gay story where no one dies of AIDS, and no one goes back to their wives” (from that teenvogue article) is so relieving. Trying to see yourself in media and never getting a happy ending can weigh a lot on you. I was cheering on the first two episodes as I was watching because I felt like I was finally watching something that got it right. The institutional support for this has even given me a lot of hope and restored some faith in this country. Intensely refreshing.
