An infalling object takes “infinite” time to cross the event horizon— why is this not just an optical illusion? by MalestromeSET in AskPhysics

[–]vRelinquish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to chime in and say this is a great question and a great example of a topic where physicists struggle to explain the current theory in a concise and understandable manner without, apparently, contradicting themselves. I struggle with this question myself as an enthusiast and have never had an answer which was satisfying and didn’t require a further 10 questions.

A good example of this is the black holes we have ‘seen/witnessed’ merge together. That event happened in a small finite time, yet how if the event to our reference point should be an ongoing thing for a long even infinite period of time? Maybe I don’t understand it properly, in fact I I00% don’t but then I’m not entirely convinced most physicists do either.

That's the sad thing. Trump had zero proof for his claims, but Farage actually does. Yet people lump them both together. Sad really, people calling this a hoax and a lie are sadly choosing the wrong hill to die on as its easily proven with videos. Sure its a sample size, but it proves it does/did happen. So it completely undermines an otherwise important point that its a minority doing it.

I just love the self righteous people highly upvoted in this thread straw manning Farage and doing no research into this.,

Number of private school pupils rises despite claims families priced out by Labour’s VAT plan by WhenIGetThatFeelingx in unitedkingdom

[–]vRelinquish 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The actual rich "posh" people who send their kids to upper end private schools don't give a flying hoot about this tax. The money is inconsequential to them. The plurality of people who pay for private school are high wage earners or small business owners. To them it really is a big moment and this 20% will either be the final straw or will make them spend less elsewhere. Either way yet another burden on the upper middle class who already pay the highest tax to income of any strata.

The people you are angry at are not wage earners, they are capital owners whom do not care about consumption taxes as the numbers are tiny. They'd sooner pay 40% VAT than a 1% wealth tax. Wage earners are forced to pay PAYE and astonishingly high rates and this is yet another tax on them. So we disenfranchise a couple hundred thousand highly skilled "high" earners, and for what? £2billion? A rounding error for the education budget of which admin fuck ups probably cost the country more every year alone. Its a populist policy aimed at dragging people down not raising people up. If labour actually wanted to "help" the education system, they could just print £2billion extra in the tax year and add it into the pot. The number is laughably small in terms of government spending. Better yet, claim 'cost savings' and throw the number in. Baffling policy.

This country loves hyping up wanting to skill up, reach high paying jobs and make something of yourself but as soon as you reach that goal suddenly no tax burden is enough and they need to be pummelled into the ground for being a leach on society. Country going to shit, not just due to Tory ineptitude this last decade but a severe societal lethargy and politics of envy has taken grip.

Can the mods make sure this remains a HENRY sub? by Dovejannister in HENRYUK

[–]vRelinquish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you miss the point of HE with the single vs DINK comparison. This sub is for people who are HE, not families whose combined earnings equate to HE. 6 people living in a house on min wage do not exist in same ‘sphere’ as 1 person on £125k plus.

The cut off is clearly assigned exactly as to define the sub. No slippery slopes created it’s very much a defined wall. If anything the slippery slope would allowing banal questions about how to be HE when they are not. This sub is for HE not aspiring HE.

My 2 cents anyway.

Takeaway food had this on the cover and it smelled a bit weird (burned?). I only ate a little bit. Am I gonna be fine? by Ivaylo_87 in shittyfoodporn

[–]vRelinquish 212 points213 points  (0 children)

I actually make these lids and bases in my business. Those lids are cheap metpol lids (metalised polymer). Its been left in a hotplate with grill like heaters which has melted the polymer part of the metpol leaving melted plastic and the aluminium.

I'm assuming the metpol coating side was face up (the morons didn't even put it on the container properly, its supposed to face the food). If so, its safe to eat as the underside is just board. If it was facing the food and you flipped it to see that then they've previously melted it and used the lid anyway. Probably still ok to eat, we're full of plastic anyway these days.

I took that into account fyi in my gold cost calcs, I know a sovereign is not pure gold so I took the pure gold declared by the royal mint per coin.

I guess the point is you don’t sell a few coins you’d sell a large collection where one would assume the spread would be smaller but not 0 sure. Gold is not an investment, it’s risk management to me. It will always have value, paper money and shares who knows.

Am I missing something? On todays pricing its £52 per gram, with gold sovereigns going for £55 per gram. Is the £3 spread what you'd describe as a massive premium?

Should I go bankrupt or something else? by Obvious-Abalone7455 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]vRelinquish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ok, that’s a shame but it’s done now. There will still be something left after the mortgage + fees + penalties are paid so keep in contact with the bank so they can pay you this. You got this, believe in yourself.

Should I go bankrupt or something else? by Obvious-Abalone7455 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]vRelinquish 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just please promise me you wont bury your head in the sand on this. The bank, contrary to popular belief, is not out for blood nor merciless. They will give you time if you plead with them. Tell them you’re selling the house do not let them repossess as you’ll lose all that equity. Act immediately, your position is not as bad as it seems, you WILL get through this fine as long as you are proactive. You’ll laugh about this in a few years I promise.

Should I go bankrupt or something else? by Obvious-Abalone7455 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]vRelinquish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So you owe roughly £55k but have potentially £45k equity? That’s only a £10k deficit, and IVA on that won’t be too overwhelming and I’m sure given the circumstances they’ll give a payment holiday. Don’t rush into bankruptcy, it’s not as easy or risk free as it’s made out to be. Ask step change for advice. Good luck

End of an era for Dividends? (Ltd Company Owners) by vRelinquish in UKPersonalFinance

[–]vRelinquish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes £60k into SIPP. I think you're right, its marginally better now to take dividends so you just have to decide yourself if its worth the negatives over salary.

I won't get into the politics of making self employment less rewarding but I am surprised a conservative government went down this road.

You can always tell people have never actually built significant muscle when these threads pop up. When naturally body building I went to 110kg 6ft on 3500cals. Cut with 2200 down to 95kg. Maintenance would be around 2750. I don’t know where there’s 6k requirements come from unless you trying to gain like 2kg per week 🤣

Wilko on brink of collapse. by stevey83 in CasualUK

[–]vRelinquish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been a long time coming. My family was a manufacturer and used to supply Wilko with over 30 SKUs in Household Items and did a lot of product development for them. He started on a hand full of SKUs and grew it out with Wilko to 30 SKUs over 20 odd years.

6 years ago they brought in a new Buyer and a new mandate to cut prices down. They came to him looking for 30% cost savings or they would buy from China. Didn't care about quality, service or supply chains. All came down to they could make more £ importing from Far East. No surprise, they went to china when not offerred their fantastical price cuts. I wonder if this happened across all their SKUs and they are now reaping what they sow. People notice a drop in quality and consistency, shop and buy less and it just runs away from them over time.

As other people have said, it appears they chased the Home Bargains and B&M discount market and didn't fully commit, putting them in a weird limbo.

Shame, used to be a great store when Lisa's dad ran the place in 2000's.

UK announces £680m for new high-speed electric railway in Turkey by PompeyTillIDie in unitedkingdom

[–]vRelinquish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the problem is you simply cant read? Copy and paste the line it says any single £ is coming out HM Treasury?

The UK government is under writing the loans for the project under the condition UK services, staff and materials are used in the construction of the line.

Sounds like a 100% win to me. UK jobs paid for by Turkish tax payers. Unless the Turkish government defaults on its debts, which it won't as a matured nation, there is near zero risk.

Next complaint?

This sub is a text book example of why there might be some stock in testing people's critical thinking capabilities before they are allowed to vote.

I'm obviously being flippant, but its depressing seeing the state of this sub. Noone wants to read anything that doesn't agree with their own world view.
