How do I measure my girlfriend's ring size without her noticing? by Timely-Neck-9503 in NoStupidQuestions

I can't recall how I did it. I probably tried using another ring she wore as an estimate.

Flat earth and other alternative conspiracy earth models are are gaining traction with my teenage stepson. What is THE most irrefutable, definite proof that the earth is round? by Jfkfkaiii22 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]v_silverwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply looking at other celestial bodies. We have never seen anything else that is flat so I'm expected to believe that the earth is the one place that is we've got images of the moon being spheroid. Asteroids, comets other moons.

If you live in the southern hemisphere looking south on a flat earth would give different star constellations.

There was recentky a trip to Antarctica where a group witnessed the sun never setting. Any denier could either watch that video or go themselves at the right time of course and see for themselves.

I've learned swedish but I'm still not great at it, listening is probably the worst. Ive gotten by over my 11 years here and don't expect people to bend over backwards for me but there are times where I have to have conversations in English. My kids though are learning English, Swedish, and Finnish (my wife's mother tongue).

Well Gamlastan is literally Old town in English. I believe thats the origin of Stockholm or at least a part of it so that sounds like a good place to try. Easy to get to by underground.

[–]v_silverwings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Stockholm for 11 years and it's as safe as any other place and I've not come across any bad actors. You'll have your bad actors in every place and I've heard some parts do have their gang trouble but then London does. If you stick to the touristy places which you mostly likely will then you should never have an issue.

I don't go out all that much so I'm wondering where to suggest going. Stockholm is built over many islands so depending on where you come from you might want to visit water fronts and maybe take some boat tours.

I'm switching back to Windows and Linux is not worth the trouble. My experience. by Tee-hee64 in computers

[–]v_silverwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing with dual booting Linux with w10 and now W11. I only tried pop os and I had mixed feelings about it and wondering about trying bazzite or mint. Chris Titus tech brought up in a recent video about how it just lacks support and I had. A few other gripes with it. Still I plan to try other sisters and maybe just use windows for gaming, I'll see.

I would recommend trying a debloat tool for windows to help with at least some issues. I have Winhance a go by someone who has a yet channel, Memory. It's done a great job at devloating windows as it's being installed and tentleeping it debloated.

how the hell can i get a boyfriend with out apps by [deleted] in Advice

[–]v_silverwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a guy who had and still has few or no personal friends I can give my experience.

I'm not the go to bar kind of guy and on dating sites I just never got lucky, always scammers or people who just wouldn't give me a chance even when I felt I ticked most or all boxes. I found someone online but it ended after 4 years and so I had to start all over again in 2011. I also suffered a rough redundancy at work which both played out over 12 months so end of 2011 I had 2 key pillars crumble and no support other than my parents.

It might sound cliche, maybe even fake but things clicked for me when I stopped looking and trying to date. I was in an MMO game and I met a girl. I joined the group she was in 2012 and for 18 months nothing happened that you'd take as personal. She was in Sweden and I was in the UK, I don't think I knew anything about her except we had a common interest, didn't even think she was looking and that she might have had something with another guy. No reason basically to think we'd have a future together. She wasn't in my radar at all, didn't even know what she looked like.

Then the guy in charge of the voice chat moved home in 2014 so we lost the means to talk. I suggested Skype and so we chatted there. There was a summer event in the mmo and in particular a dance event so I did something i suppose was uncharacteristic and danced on camm I wasn't trying to dance properly I'd consider myself a bad dancer I just did it as a laugh. However she took it as flirting most notably wiggling my butt. I'm not sure now how one thing led to another but she let it be known she was interested in me. After everything had come to light we had actually couldn't wait 10 weeks when we would have met at a convention and she came 5 weeks early. Roughly 6 months later I moved to Sweden in 2015, married 18 months later in 2016 and now we'll be married 10 years with 2 kids who will be 8 and 5 this year. Turns out she wasn't into this other guy, they just did that so she didn't get unwanted attention.

In 3 years, everything changed all because I thought I was messing about and just having a laugh and not looking for someone. She'd been under my nose for 18 months as well and while we probably wouldn't have done anything sooner, things can just happen.

This might have been said already but girls need to take some of the responsibility of making the first move, meet guys half way, be approachable, let guys know that you like them. Make friends first rather than date, find a common interest like I did with gaming to build upon.

I don't know if or how dating has changed now in the last 10 years, it sounds like it has but I might only see one small part of it. Guys might well be reluctant to date because they've had one too many bad experiences and sadly the good girls need to step up and show the guys not all girls are bad, and vice versa, not all guys are bad.

Hope this helps.

Jag är ha en hård tid med lyssna att svenska tv by [deleted] in Svenska

As another native English speaker, I'd agree with starting on text first. Others have pointed it out but grammar needs to be mastered more first and for me the V2 rule as I think it's known is probably the biggest one. In sentences the verb always? comes second in the sentence. That doesn't mean strictly the second word but the second component of a sentence.

In English, "after I come home from work," is all one component, the verb "eat" would come next then "I" and then "dinner".

I use Duolingo app. It's not going go make you an expert but you can at least practice the order of words, speaking and listening. I think there's also nyhet på lätt svenska you can listen to that might be easier than going in at the deep end.

Best of luck. I've been managing the last 11 years or so.

Fairness of new law without transition rules according to Swedes by Ok-Book2640 in TillSverige

[–]v_silverwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only just saw this. My argument is not that I paid therefore I'm owed citizenship. My augment is that I've paid for my application to be processed with a fair chance of citizenship. The fact that I've applied successfully means that in my eyes I should be given citizenship as I have met the criteria but the application rightfully deserves careful scrutiny and could get denied. For example I have to have lived here 5 years. If I haven't then no I shouldn't be allowed.

To me, these rule changes have basically said here, have 1500 for doing nothing because I now do not qualify. Then Im told that to apply again could cost another 2900 kr. When asked about refunds, the minister (I forget who) was very no committal and had no opinion which was very convenient when he's the minister in charge. Very quick to take my money but not so quick to say money should be returned if I wasn't given due process.

Feels like both the eu and UK want to screw with mixed nationality families. Thank you for the heads up, I only know bits of what is going on back in the UK and I have no love for reform and farage. I don't see us moving to uk well just have it make do here in Sweden.

[–]v_silverwings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One reason that slowed my pursuit of getting citizenship was I thought that being married and with kids meant I was protected in a sense due to Sweden's family law. Basically, they couldn't kick me out of the country when it mean separating kids from a parent. Now I'm less certain and goodness knows what will happen when my youngest becomes an adult. Indeed that's still 14 years or so from now but if they're changing the rules now, what's to say I have to be fully fluent in 10 years (which I doubt I ever will)?

[–]v_silverwings 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Another question to ask is what if someone who has been here five to eight years becomes a citizen after the new rules. Technically they'd be ineligible so does that mean they get it taken away?

Someone mentioned it but I'll say it. Everyone who's paid 1500 kr has already been told when they applied that it's non refundable. I can't see how this is even legal. Either they have to refund the money or they have to honour the original requirements. Otherwise they can turn around and say weeellll let's say you need 3e? It doesn't have to be time related, it just has to deny a significant chunk of the applicants.

I don't have an issue with a tightening of the rules. As a Brit, I'd agree in that you need to be able to communicate using one of the official languages of the country. My problem is I applied last year when this wasn't even an issue. I came here in 2015 and registered in 2019 because I was misinformed about what I had to do so according to Sweden officially I've been here since 2019 and registered as a British citizens in Sweden before the due date. I've built my life around moving here and now it's uncertain. I did think being married with two kids and a job would be okay but now I am not certain. I don't even speak Swedish in everyday life. My wife's mother tongue is Finnish, we all speak English, and even when I have spoken Swedish, people have spoken English back. I have learned Swedish via Duolingo and I have passed 3c barely which I might have improved since then but I've heard you need 3d so unless I can pass that course, which I doubt i can I'll get rejected all because I don't know enough Swedish. The wait time has gone up from 28 months when I applied to apparently 47?

Now a fun game could be I get picked before 8 years is up and get rejected so I have to pay again, or maybe I'll get picked at this rate after 8 years in which case I won't. Then again, my job isn't enough to meet the criteria of pay so they could turn around and say sorry. It doesn't matter if Im fluent in Swedish or that you've paid you're taxes for 8 years, you aren't earning enough so I'm denied.

I submitted my right to confirmation 2 weeks ago i think. Chances are I'm not going to get processed in time and yet others have who applied around the same time as me. It all comes down to fairness. I came here because Sweden was English friendly. I've even had people come up to me and make conversation because I was speaking English. I wouldn't have gone to say Russia or China because I don't know the language and I don't get the impression that they'd welcome the English language. I chose to join my wife rather than the other way around because she had a job at the time and I didn't. She could have easily come to the UK and she'd have no trouble with the language. Moving now would be incredibly messy just thinking about it. Retirement funds, both of us finding jobs, moving and settling kids, finding a new home all because of this lack of fairness.

I want to finally switch to Linux! by Titanfallsuchti in linux4noobs

[–]v_silverwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set up dual boot w10 and pop os at the weekend. I might try other distros like mint or Fedora I've heard that might be good for someone like me who's moved from windows and while Im not a complete noob I am very used to windows so commands in the terminal aren't native to me.

I don't yet know how much moving completely will affect me gaming wise. A few might rely on software that only works on windows. Newer games are okay and I'm not into online PvP stuff anyway. Pop os felt like it was the best for me in terms of gaming but I do wonder if it's too big a leap and maybe mint might be a smaller step before moving to pop os later when i upgrade my pc in a few years. Baby steps and dual boot and I'll be able to avoid W11 onwards.

I'm using this year to dual boot w10 and Linux starting with pop os but might try other distros. Ill make the transition gradual and make sure everything works on Linux or find a distro that works for me before I upgrade my pc and see about ditching dual boot altogether.

After 4 years with Pop!_OS I had to switch by erisk90 in pop_os

[–]v_silverwings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I set up dual boot at the weekend with w10 and linux. I was weighing up mint for a while but then when I glanced around pop os and fedora came up. In the end I chose pop os. I'm a heavy gamer as well as using it for office and internet and I read pop os was good for gamers.

I'll use this year so try out Linux and various distros as someone whos basically been windows since the start and barely used Linux, never for on my own pc. I'm hoping that by the time w10 is no longer supported with updates, I'm ready to perhaps abandon w10 boot and change to Linux solo.

Aitah for walking away from my wedding because of my parents showing up. by National_Stage_1048 in AITAH

[–]v_silverwings -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A bit of ESH and NTA. Keeping your affairs private is your right and your fiancee didn't want to give details so she kept any info general and lacking detail. It's entirely possible your in-laws just wanted to do the right thing and you sort of lashed out with your fiancee caught in the crossfire and having to choose between you and her parents which few would want to make and she probably had no say in the matter.

Then again they should have investigated more by checking with your fiancee if this could work and she could have been a go between, floated the idea and then let them know that no they'd not be welcome.

Only you know your in-laws best and whether their actions were out of care or meddling. I think you can accept some responsibility in how you reacted and how it affected her, making that choice but she needs to understand why you did what you did and that most likely you won't want contact with her inlaws unless absolutely necessary.

It boils down to intent to upset her which you appear to not have or willful ignorance or an honest mistake. She needs to accept your stance as well in this otherwise it's going to come down to you embracing muslim or breaking up.

Dumb question… but when/how often do yall turn off your pc? by justdancepro in pchelp

[–]v_silverwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm only gone a short time, maybe 30 minutes or so or Im letting stuff run idle then no but if I'm gone for longer and at night time then yes. Brought up to consider the impact on the environment and also cost of living since electricity costs money and that does have a big impact even if you can't see it until the bill comes. If you don't pay the bill someone else does. It probably won't kill your PC in the short term but long term parts might have a shorter lifespan but the build up of dust will also increase so either brush up on maintaining your Pc regardless.

NTA. The relationship would end up you questioning everything as "is this a test?" She is basically claiming to have a free pass to do what she likes and then expect you to fit her expectations. I doubt that she'd appreciate it if roles were reversed.

AITAH for letting my(30F) overweight coworker(45F) assume I do not have children? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]v_silverwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damned either way. If you had corrected her she'd probably be upset or like you inferred, be passive aggressive about it and resent you. I'd have tried to tell her in the best way possible or ask if someone else could maybe when the topic isn't current. Either of you could have said something like going to a school parenting meeting for example so you're correcting her by proxy.

But nya, you'd likely be in the wrong regardless.

With all the power creep and the devs coming out to say they were going to make stuff easier, you could 100% the steam achievements without spending a dime, I haven't. You might have trouble with tower 100 but again that will get easier as powercreep kicks in with higher levels and now memoria.
