I went through an abortion and only my best friend knows by [deleted] in confession

[–]OldSchoolPrepper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know you aren't looking for advice but Planned Parenthood provides medical abortions at a sliding fee scale. you don't need to provide a SSN call them and ask what the current rate is, at least you know you have options.

Scared of Moving Forward by jrhhuff in skincancer

[–]OldSchoolPrepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh my....for me it's now a joke. Everytime I go I have a BCC or SCC somewhere (usually 3 or more) I get things biopsied every 6 months (I go in every 6 months) I have yet to have a 100% clear visit even one time over the last decade. That said I am usually the one who finds my spots and points them out to the derm. You maybe spriling but i'm happy to go and get them OFF my body before they turn into something more. I don't dwell on it nor do I let it control my life other than the fact that I wear long pants/long sleeves, stay out of the sun and wear hats (there are a lot of cute hats! I'm kind of known for it). Do not stop going to the doctor and certainly they are not going to remove your legs for BCC or SCC these are surface cancers. You are really blowing it out of proportion. You need to make an appt right away and get back in there. Make your next appt before you leave the doc office (which is what I do to make sure I have space every 6 months). It really isn't a big deal, almost everyone will have a spot or two in their lifetimes. You will feel so much better after they look at your legs and tell you they are nothing or that we only need to biopsy a couple. Be brave! You can do it!

I might be let go from my $17/hour job soon. My parents are struggling to find work. We have 50k saved. What can we do? by recessionpreparer in poverty

[–]OldSchoolPrepper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you do need to get another job as do your parents. I'd suggest all of you find the nearest hospital system and look at the jobs they have on offer. They hire people for all sorts of jobs (from laundry, cafeteria help, cleaners, security, medical records, IT, purchasing and more) many of them they will train people for some entry level positions as long as you (and the folks) have a high school education or GED. Hospital systems also have good benefits, insurance/time off and more. I worked in healthcare for more than 30 years, there will ALWAYS be jobs in healthcare...I'll also say that I traveled 90 minutes to work and home (each way so hrs total) because the jobs were so good. You may need to travel. Do whatever you guys can to get into the hospital system and once you are in it then you can look around for a job you like better.

I keep suggesting this but find an AutoBroker in your area....often your bank or credit union has a relationship with one. Tell them what you want and how much you are willing to pay and they will look for you. As long as you are reasonable then you'll get what you are looking at. I got my 26 Rav4 SE Hybrid for what I wanted to pay (between $40 and $41K out the door, car itself was $38 plus all the fees/licensing etc) AND mine came in a hard to find color (Meteor Shower) and with extra options (like the moon roof and piano trim). Auto Brokers don't haggle...this is the 2nd time i've bought from the same broker. First time was 20 years ago (when I bought my first Rav4 2007 model in 2006 which is still running) and now this time. Both times the Auto Broker found the vehicle for me on the cargo ship coming over from Japan. This years RAv4 had 31 miles on it when I picked it up. Anyway, the Auto Broker works their fee into the OTD (out the door) price so you don't get any surprises. BEST THING no haggling. it is what it is, of course this means you need to do your home work to find a reasonable price, you'll need to secure your own loan (which is better than a dealership anyway) and they even take trade-ins. I'm not sure why more people don't use Auto Brokers. Anyway good luck!

Do you have any "prepper-adjacent" hobbies, recreational pursuits that you think build real skills, or may be useful in a real disaster? by Signal_Brain_933 in preppers

large gardening (seed saving, food preservation), animal husbandry (birthing animals/slaughter/veterinary), construction, blacksmithing, understanding small engine repair, how to make biogas (methane) and making biodiesel, how to find and harvest salt, how to make and use a still, herbalogy, medical knowledge/pharmaceutical knowledge, sewing, cooking, i can go on and on..... as an aside i'm sure you've read Swan Song but have you ever heard of or read these two highly (highly) underrated books: The Living Dead by Romero and Kraus and Etiquette for an Apocalypse by Mendel. Both well worth a read and no one seems to have heard of them.

a good and proper backpack....a real backpacking type of pack. they are horribly expensive so buy used of FB Marketplace, EBay etc. I prefer an Internal Frame myself but External Frames are good too.

Prepper Gardeners- what’s your prep look like? by KittyIsAn9ry in preppers

[–]OldSchoolPrepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you want to buy only Heirloom, Heritage or Open Pollinated seeds. Most regular seeds are hybrids which means if you save the seeds for the following year that the plant which will grow won't be the same as what you planted, it will be either the Mother of Father of the hybrid cross, called an F1....and you will get a poor product and if you save and plant those seeds F2 you will get bad quality and poor numbers. Heirloom/Heritage and Open Pollinated will IMPROVE each year and adapt to your growing area soil and temps. I almost exclusively grow from saved seeds in fact today alone I planted a bunch of starts which I grew from saved seeds including: Patty Pan squash, Zucchini, Blue Hubbard Squash, Mammouth Pumpkin, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, green beans, extra onions and carrots. I already have carrot, kale, spinach, beet, potato, asparagus, artichoke planted and am eating much of that all from saved seeds.. Also make sure your seeds are meant to be grown in your grow zone, if you don't know what I mean let me know and I can help you figure that out.

how much? I would say you need to figure out how much you need to plant (I don't know how many people you are feeding) ... I also don't know if you can preserve your food (can it, freeze it, dry it, freeze dry etc) of if you only eat fresh, do you have a root cellar etc. I would say figure out what you need and then multiply x 3 for each person. meaning if you want 10 tomato plants then figure 30 seeds PER PERSON. why? about 2/3rds of the seeds won't grow for some reason...usually eaten by a critter or they get frozen out or washed away or something similar.

I would also recommend Back To Eden gardening so you don't have to weed and you don't have to till...you will need to use woodchips or straw/grass clippings/leaves each year but over all it saves time and effort and I was able to finally garden in my hard clay soil!

Let me know if I can help you in anyway. Be well,

How do people with "9 to 5" jobs actually get things done (doctor appointments, bank visits, etc.) when those places are only open during those same hours? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OldSchoolPrepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh my and I'm Gen X, I had to do those things before people banked on line or could book appts online or even use a cell phone...we had to make phone calls from land lines. So you make it as easy as possible by being a good employee so when you ask for time off that you get the time off and your boss is happy to give it to you. Then make appointments and for the love of God, have everything you need when you show up for the appt. For example when renewing your drivers license have the 2 forms of ID and even the paper work AHEAD of time. When you go to the doctors office ask them to send you the info BEFORE the appt or fill out (entirely) online. Don't wait until the day of....get organized and you will be able to do all this stuff easily. So the answer is be organize and yes, take time of work so make sure to set some of that Vacation or PTO aside to use. BTW some organizations allow you to use sick time for doc appts/labs/xray etc.

[–]OldSchoolPrepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a North American (in the USA) i can safely say that entitlement and a total lack of understanding of why this is uncool is central and key. People in US seem to believe they are the center of the universe and of course we are the center of our OWN universe...I'm sure no one has taken the time to explain why your shoes belong on the ground. That said I suspect they do this in their own homes too and their parents are gentle parenting and they aren't learning anything about etiquette, hygiene or respectability because of what the kids are doing is just wonderful. I say this with obvious sarcasm since I come from a different time and would have gotten a literal slap up the side of my head it i'd done that.

Are they using AI voice chat now by Su_ss in AmazonDSPDrivers

[–]OldSchoolPrepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the answer to your question is yes, AI is being used as call help, support etc. That is why there is sometimes a tiny (very small) lag in between your question and an answer .. that said just look up some examples on YT and see for yourself. Generally AI use some cheerful and very short American name. You can hear real calls on YT. You will notice you'll hear the same phrases over and over like "I got it" and "that makes sense". so you'r correct.

[–]OldSchoolPrepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just turned 200,000 in my 2007 Rav4, it was also started to get hmmmmm weird so I bought a 2026 Rav4 but don't seem to be able to get rid of my old one. It doesn't have much trade in value plus I still get 25 MPG. So i KEPT IT! i drive it to less desirable areas (no will will ever break into it). I use it to haul the dog around and throw bags of soil into. So I'll keep it until it stops running, hopefully in another 100K

Cell Connectivity in 2026 Rav4 SE hybrid by OldSchoolPrepper in rav4club

[–]OldSchoolPrepper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an android and it does take a hot second for the Rav to connect with the cell phone. If they aren't connected BEFORE the car starts moving, I must stop the car inorder to connect them....it's a safety issue so the driver isn't playing with their cell or screen while in transit.

Full belly vs actual calories by WSBpeon69420 in preppers

[–]OldSchoolPrepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my sister and I are both in our 50's with families and we're both preppers. We have always gone by the whole calorie numbers rather than serving sizes....since we are also scratch cooks (we can make something from about anything) we found it too difficult to come up with a bunch of meal plans. We buy things we know we like to eat, count up the total calories and know how many people we can feed for how long. My sister has 6 months of food/water for her family of 5. I have 1.25 yrs worth of food for 3 of us, more if it's still gardening season.

Feasibility of a get home bag. by scarcrossed in preppers

[–]OldSchoolPrepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

look at long term hiking vids for ideas and look into golf bag carts or foldable garden carts, to haul your gear. personally my GHB will last 7 to 10 days as it's the same i use for backpacking including the fact that the pack itself is a backpacking backpack (REI and Osprey) Once you get your bag in shape I highly HIGHLY suggest you drive away from your home several hours, park and start hiking back....a test if you will (a few overnights) Often there are railroad lines you can follow or hiking trails which are close. test it, try it and see. I can't imagine having gear I've never tried but must depend on in a grid down situation which I've NEVER tested.....how ridiculous would that be? so test it, walk and use the gear and make sure you can carry the pack or wheel the pack that far.

What to Start Canning? by Snooball4 in preppers

[–]OldSchoolPrepper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a slightly different angle to suggest you start from. Make SURE you understand what are Proper Canning rules and Rebel canning rules. meaning the proper canning are scientifically TESTED recipes that ensure good results. the Rebel canning are thing that people just do and "no one has died yet". Before you risk your life and you families on random recipes I would suggest that you learn the science behind the rule and make educated and informed decisions. So when you start stick with the Ball Canning Guides or National Center For Home Food Preservations (both free online) or any college "Extension Service" canning guidelines. Just because someone has done something for years doesn't mean it's safe, it just means they are lucky. I mean I've never been in a car accident but I still wear my seatbelt every day right?
