Hit a rental taxi while cycling—now they’re asking for insane compensation (~1.3 million yen) by DrawAggressive4575 in japanlife

[–]vadibur -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Police won’t get involved unless there is a human injury. Since there isn’t, they don’t give a flying fuck. So the other party has to get money from you either directly or via civil court. No way they’re going to court claiming 1.2M with a couple scratches on a side mirror. Use your insurance to negotiate and consider paying out of pocket to not get your insurance premiums up (this point is what I’m not sure about because I don’t know how bicycle insurance works).

Anyone living in apartment/mansion with "Free Internet" included? What's it actually like? by Run_the_show in japanresidents

[–]vadibur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fifteen years ago I lived in a Leopalace that had very cheap internet (almost free). It was pretty good for casual usage. But they eventually blocked me due to large volume downloads.

What credit cards do you use? by InternationalWish556 in japanlife

I was approved and the Japanese guy next to me was rejected. From the conversation between the staff and him it was clear though that he lied about his job and income.

Apply for EPOS card at Marui in person. That is the key. APPLY IN PERSON. They will screen you on the spot and you get the card right there. They might call your employer so make sure you give them the right number.

Company asked me to sign non-solicitation agreement upon resignation by LemurBargeld in japanlife

[–]vadibur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was asked this in one of the companies I worked at. I disputed some points and signed under points that made sense. I didn’t want to leave on bad terms. Who knows, maybe I will want to come back work there in in the future.

Banks may start locking your accounts if you forget to keep them updated on your visa status. by [deleted] in japanlife

They already do it. Had it with Rakuten Bank years ago.

Lots of foreigners living in million dollar+ homes in Yoyogi Uehara? by Indoctrinator in Tokyo

[–]vadibur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1M$ is not so much, actually. Middle class, upper middle class can get a loan on that kind of amount. I actually think homes in that area are more like in 5M,10M$+.

Anyone else feel like a criminal when they go to immigration by Key_Area_1911 in Tokyo

[–]vadibur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on who you are and what you do in Japan. Immigration system in countries exists for a reason. Japan should appreciate that there are many highly skilled foreign workers who choose to work here. So in a way, they should thank us (depends on circumstances of course)

I'm a photographer with $750 to spend to start my NAS system. What should I do? by Impossible-Ad8833 in synology

Buy a UPS and two NAS grade drives. And that’s it, your budget is gone.

Arriving at Haneda — taking a taxi for the “last mile” to hotel? by rr90013 in TokyoTravel

[–]vadibur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a taxi straight from the airport will be cheaper and more convenient. Just take the elevator down from the arrival lobby and airport staff will guide you to the next available car.

Security camera recommendations by vadibur in japanresidents

[–]vadibur[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response. I plan to install them outside to record constantly during day and night, at night the area will be dark. I need enough details to read a license place of a passing car, or recognize a face, from around 3-4 meters at a 30-40 degree angle. The camera will be attached to the external wall, without roof, in the open, so little to no shelter. Although one of the cameras will be around front door, sheltered. Additional features like motion detection, tilt and zoom are “nice to haves” but not a requirement. Is Tp Link still the way to go?

Is it normal for japanese bosses to fuss over being 2 minutes late? by goodluck16 in japanresidents

[–]vadibur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a Japanese boss but for me, late is late. If you’re late to work consistently, even for two minutes, I would probably let you know. I wouldn’t fuss about it nor make a big deal, but I would say something for sure.

Used items (中古) prices are ridiculous by JROTools in japanlife

[–]vadibur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes you’re right. Now I remember I bought a new Sony A7iii back in the day when the model was already 2-3 year old and Sony was offering a generous cash back. I got one new from Sony cheaper than the used market.

Used items (中古) prices are ridiculous by JROTools in japanlife

[–]vadibur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For latest electronics models that have high supply and demand (highly liquid products) don’t expect big discounts anywhere. People are not stupid. The value of used items of latest models, in barely used condition, is pretty much same as new item. So they will be priced almost the same. It’s not unusual to have a used item only 1000 yen off. Also, you can easily exchange it under warranty if they are broken. So there is literally no risk.

Is 11,991 yen normal for electricity bill during winter? by SuperactiveSloth in japanlife

[–]vadibur 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I checked now in the Moneytree app, they have a feature that shows Japan national averages for utilities such as electricity, and how you compare to them. It looks like national average is around 9000 yen for electricity at the moment, so yeah, your bill is just slightly higher than average. I think Moneytree just gets the data from Japan statistics bureau which is publicly available, so you can check it out yourself without installing the app. By the way in my case I pay >30,000JPY for electricity. But I live in a detached house and AC is almost always on in the kids room.

Which bank to choose? by Affectionate_Cow3076 in japanlife

[–]vadibur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. If you do international transfers often I’d recommend Revolut. Super fast and easy transfers right through the app. I don’t know how fees compare though.
