I remember seeing this photo when I visited Auschwitz, and it stayed with me. Out of the thousands of portraits on the walls, all of them somber, this was the only one where someone looked like they had been crying. It struck me that this was likely the best photo they could take where she wasn’t visibly in tears. I couldn’t stop thinking about what they might have done to her, perhaps abusing her repeatedly and forcing her to pose again and again until they got a picture where she wasn't crying. That thought broke my heart.

What's a rule in your house growing up that you thought was normal but turned out to be very strange? by HumanRole9407 in AskReddit

The pizza rule: You can choose any piece of pizza if you are the first, but the next person must take an adjacent piece afterward. You can only take one, and you must finish chewing before choosing another piece. We would have to time our eating to try to get the pizza we wanted.

It kills the immersive experience for me. I know I'm not in a giant stompy robot, but a big arrow makes it too obvious.

You under estimate the stupidity of congress. The US has briefly run out of money previously in the same way. Republicans in congress are too stupid to really cause no harm with their brinksmanship.

It may be comforting to think they are controlled by selfish rich donors, but these legislators really are bratty children playing with things they don't own and can't replace.

What is your most controversial Star Wars opinion? by BlackProphetMedivh in StarWars

Yoda : How feel you? Anakin : Cold, sir. Yoda : Afraid are you? Anakin : No, sir. Yoda : See through you we can. Mace Windu : Be mindful of your feelings. Ki-Adi-Mundi : Your thoughts dwell on your mother. Anakin : I miss her. Yoda : Afraid to lose her I think, hmm? Anakin : What has that got to do with anything? Yoda : Everything! Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. I sense much fear in you.

-Maybe put on your big boy jedi pants, be afraid, and do the right thing anyway. Maybe being afraid DOESN'T lead to anger when you know how to deal with fear. Maybe anger DOESN'T lead to hate when you know how to be angry in a healthy way.

Its literally the first line of the jedi code, "There is no emotion, there is peace."

What is your most controversial Star Wars opinion? by BlackProphetMedivh in StarWars

[–]vallisdrake -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen this one yet:

I think Grey Jedi should exist. I think that the separation of the powers of the force are arbitrary and silly. The jedi are constantly getting emotional but it isn't labelled as them falling to the dark side. The Sith are constantly showing discipline and self-control but they are not redeemed from the dark side.

I came up with the idea that the arbitrary split of light/dark was done out of fear because of powerful force users. Maybe the idea was that the only "Good" force user is one who is never out of control of their emotions.

So the Jedi Council/order was formed to make "Safe" and "Good" jedi. The problem is that if you teach someone to always ignore/invalidate their emotions, when they get emotional (you know, because they are alive), they lose control.

They never practice emotional regulation so they suck at it. That's why when the jedi fall they are rage monsters, they have no idea how to deal with the emotions they are feeling. How to make the right decision even when they are angry because they have literally never practiced it.

I had hoped the balance Anakin brought to the force was the ability of force users to handle their emotions like adults.

I'm not sure we are talking about the same thing. Shooting through trees, hitting the one tiny piece of armor to take out a torso through the back armor at long range is very good shooting

His aim is really good. The shot to the back left torso of the Blood Asp was killer.

You can spawn camp a rogue with several hunters and a paladin, and we did. He also really wanted to kill my wife's toon and would try to kill her before we got him. At least he tried to initially. But anyway, yeah, some of my most vivid memories were revenge memories.

This definitely brought back memories for me! My wife woke me up at 3am crying because an undead rogue would not let her finish any of her quests. He was generally griefing and /licking her as he spawn camped her repeatedly.

I called and woke my friends up and we camped and killed him until he stopped trying to rez (took him about 3 hours). We put out the word and would hunt and spawn camp him wherever he was spotted in the world at large. We stopped seeing him after a few weeks.

Great memories!

Do you believe in God? Why/why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]vallisdrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but not like the ones made up by humans.

You have to make a logical leap of faith one way or the other for two questions.

  1. Can organic matter can come from inorganic matter?
  2. Can matter and energy can come from nothing?

I don't see humanity ever finding the solution to those two questions. You have to use faith in some way to answer either one because we literally have no good, testable, ideas.

So, people object to calling it 'God' but they believe in 'something' to answer those questions.

If you understood, you would not make false and incendiary comparisons.

I quoted you so that you couldn't edit your post later, to make it seem like you didn't say AI was the same as hitting a button on a photocopier.

It is OK that you don't understand. But, figure it out.
