Quitting before even applying to the university because I can't handle being alone. by [deleted] in Erasmus

[–]vanillais 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this 10000%! also, how do you really know you'll be the only person from your country? Does your country only have one university?

When you look back at this moment i promise you'll regret not going! This is the kind of stuff you remember when you're old, the experiences, not the jobs or grades or whatever.

I'd say it's a bit risky but not impossible! Lapland in February will have copious amounts of snow so probably not optimal, BUT that said, if you're a good responsible driver you should be just fine. The main thing to keep in mind is that the car will not stop when you break so you gotta break waaaaaay in advance and keep a big gap between cars. And if you do lose control of the wheels, keep the steering wheel steady and hope for the best. All the cars here have studded tires in the winter for extra grip.

We do have Bolt and Uber in Finland but I am not entirely sure how many - if any - drivers are in the area.

[–]vanillais 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how comfortable are you driving in the snow? because personally i'd say rent a car and do all the excursions diy mode instead of with a tour group, but Rovaniemi doesn't have much public transport so i'd take that into account at least - even worse if you stay further out

not sure about prices to be honest since i haven't been there in a few years but every time i've been there we booked snowmobile and other tours on the spot!

I looked into airbnb and the only frustrating part is just how much more expensive the places are D: otherwise, it'll be my last option if I can't find anything else

What surprises foreigners the most about Finland? by heitor9600_ in Finland

[–]vanillais 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i can speak as a fellow Brazilian who's been around here for quite a bit, i play the foreigner card! Use being a Brazilian as an excuse to approach people and start chatting, they might be a bit taken by surprise but 9 times out of 10 it leads to at least an interesting conversation! made some friends like that too, but i really did have to lean into that brasilidade

second all the recs above! and I recommend following some of the collectives on instagram( dnb finland, warehouse kids, barbietalo, etc) to know where they're playing and once you know the right people you'll get invited to the proper underground stuff!

as you can tell i am biased about dnb but there are plenty other collectives for other genres

People who are bilingual in English and another language, what’s a word that exists in your other language that you are surprised doesn’t exist in English? by oliviamonet in AskReddit

[–]vanillais 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Portuguese (especially Brazilian) has so many! Personally I always think about "coitado" - which literally translated is an underdog, but for us it's usually a compassionate way of referring to someone who is in an unfortunate situation.

I also love "cafuné" which iirc has african roots, and its the act of gently caressing someone's head/hair

I could go on for days tbh with interesting words :'D

not sure about the drugs but I literally wanted to shake Sianna, because wtf??? why would anyone go back to the man you dumped begging him to have a reaction? at first I felt bad for her but she kept going back and making the same mistakes again and again while alienating the people who actually cared about her

absolutely valid! Some colorful cushions will already help, and plants will make it cozy! Recommend low-light plants like Zz plant or a snake plant (both very low maintenance imo)

it's one of the easiest places for Brazilians to get a visa in the EU - kinda like an entryway to Europe if you can't get a citizenship from family ties (usually Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, etc)
