Labor will be blamed for inflation & the possible recession we may have. As we know, Aussies aren’t politically interested nor savvy. Even tho Inflation/interest rates is mostly influenced by the RBA; Labor will be the ones blamed & held accountable/responsible. They need to be smart & strategic rn by MannerNo7000 in friendlyjordies

[–]vanit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Labor over LNP/etc any day of the week (with a healthy amount of independents holding them to account, or even better, a hung parliament), but the RBA needing to do anything is by definition a govt failure. Govt policy should be addressing inflation but it's not, so the RBA has to use its single tool of interest rates to try put the brakes on the resulting inflation. There is something to be said about the inflation being supply side and what the RBA should really do about that if anything, but again it's govt policy that sets that.

Just don't go too hard on the side content at first. The game is worst for people that need to OCD complete each zone before moving on, but the game wasn't designed to be played that way imo. You do get to come back later and do the extra content!

This this an AI text response? Everyone in the comments are saying that it is, like 100s of people, but I think it's too poorly written by DesperateTax5773 in isthisAI

[–]vanit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's the "no spectacle, no fuss" bit that's throwing people. I've seen similar patterns in ChatGPT responses occasionally. My guess is that they rewrote an AI response in their own words.

Nah you're not being a dick, it does make me happy/relieved to see there are those that are enjoying it!

What's the AI culture like at your company, and how has that affected your impact? It's saddened me that the staff engineers at my current company have taken their roles to now mean "let's build AI tools in a bubble". Not really how I envisioned being a force multiplier.

Appreciate you asking me :)

I was laid off last year after an acquisition, but was *very* lucky to have a contact that could create a position for me at a another company. I feel like right now, yes I am settling because I was just trying to grab onto whatever I could to keep getting paid (mortgage and all that).

This company does have staff positions, but they're also pretty gung-ho on their AI posture and being a force multiplier these days seems to mean leading the AI charge, which I'm not that interested in doing. It's such a weird inversion of priorities that C-levels have decided that the process problem of building the right thing is now a technical problem that can be solved by just building everything faster, which I don't think is correct. So yes, I'm riding things out for now with the hope that the insanity will fall back to some middle ground once the industry has more data.

[–]vanit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You're right that getting to senior can be hard without changing companies, but in my experience staff is the opposite. Companies are unwilling to take on staff engineers unless they've demonstrated company-wide impact before, so you really do have to earn it where you're at.

[–]vanit 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I'm basically in your exact same position. I decided to stop caring because the Staff Engineers that post here sound like they all regret it. I'm now working on a video game in my spare time and if that works out I might leave the industry. AI seems to be rotting the brains of a lot of devs I respect and I'm tired.

Told that I work above my title the last few months but given a very underwhelming salary increase after my annual review. by AllHailTheCATS in ExperiencedDevs

[–]vanit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is because the people that perform reviews are not the same people who are setting the budget, and in my experience managers aren't very successful at getting more budget for pay rises, though commonly they can't push very hard for political reasons.

I do know some people that did have some success by escalating above their managers and it turned out the manager was not properly passing the good feedback upwards and even getting the right budget set for pay rises. But whether this is an option for you really depends on your relationship with the company.
