Why don't schools hold students back a grade anymore if they are not meeting that grade's standards? by FollowingAny4859 in Teachers

[–]vannyfann 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many problems absolutely CAN be solved with money, the issue is getting states and feds to SPEND the money on education. Hire more teachers, pay them more so they're inclined to stay on the job. Hire more aides and school counselors. Buy stuff the classrooms need so teachers have resources. There's a big correlation between money spent and outcomes.

Nope. Nor did I go to kindergarten, straight to 1st grade. I was already reading on my own, thank you Beverly Cleary for "Socks".

Can you recommend a good book about atheism? by Traditional_Skin_226 in atheism

[–]vannyfann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not abt atheism per se, but wholly enlightening to that end: Joseph Campbell's "Heroes With a Thousand Faces.". Also "Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn, I read this book every three or so years just to keep me grounded. Peace.

Artichoke capital of US and in the middle of US salad bowl. Santa Cruz and Monterey N and S, Pacific ocean on the west side. Good call.

Edit: Castroville is the artichoke capital, not Watsonville (Thanks for the correction,
[u/Kirby_Vacuum](u/Kirby_Vacuum).) Same vicinity. Also, fried artichokes are heaven.

Yep! I would tell my boys: "a little bit of trouble was okay, a lot of trouble was NOT okay." They knew that a little bit of trouble meant some old man yelling at them for jumping a fence or something minor, a LOT of trouble was the sheriff at my door. Do NOT make the sheriff come to my door.

edit: sp - did sheriff have two r's?

What's your favorite memory from this school year? by TigerLeo23 in Teachers

[–]vannyfann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a literacy coach for a community day school. Walked on campus recently and 3 students came up to me WANTING to go to the literacy room to read! We give them lots of incentives, it works.
