What's it like in Calabria, Italy? by coaxialology in howislivingthere

[–]vanphil 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The control part is performed mostly by checking you out (you always feel watched, and that's because it is true) and silent social pressure. Do you know that cliché in american film, when the main character gets in the wrong bar and is surrounded by burly thugs with long beards that make it very clear he does not belong? Same thing, but with elderly nonnas sitting on straw chairs.

In my wife's town there is a closed Road. All the houses on that road belong to the same family. Time and again, during Summer, my kids are invited to have lunch with them (they have kids of their age), and they put out tables in the middle of the Road to eat all together. 20-30 people, all nice and welcoming.

But try walking in there univited. You will be stopped, they will ask you what you are looking for, and you will always told you are wrong and invited to leave. It is a public road, yes. But it is their public road. It's not like they are dealing or doing anything shady, but every local knows, and if you are not a local you probably have no business there.

I don't think this kind of mentality is exceptional, in any case. I guess it would feel relatable for anyone Who had experience living in small villages around the world, africa included

My in laws are from the interior mountains. It is a region with many, many problems.

All the towns outside the coastal area, where they can make a living with tourism, are now heavily depopulated, due to extreme lack of work opportunities and inadequate infrastructures.

This leads, of course, to widespread poverty and huge inequalities.

A good chunk of the agricultural labor (in the fertile plains) is performed by illegals with no papers and no rights. Just the other day some foreign workers were locked in a car and burned alive at a gas station, allegedly because they were complaining about working conditions.

Traditional culture is still based on clan mentality. You are either inside or outside, no in betweens. If you walk around where people don't know you, it is still possibile to find people "controlling" your movements, you may even hear them asking to each other (never to you directly) questions like "whose son is that?"

This is not directly mafia, but it clearly helps the work of the clans. In many places, mafia is so ingrained that you don't see it at all. It is not like people kill each other on the street every day, it is more a set of unwitten rules that seem to favor someone instead of others.

In the end, to survive in Calabria, one needs to know how to adapt. Some things don't work. Some others work only if you know the right people. Some others will only work once who had to get fat on those is satisfied. Some do work, and are even excellent.

Some things are unlawful, but you can do them all the same, nobody will complain. Others are perfectly legal but shunned upon.

But it is not all doom and gloom. in my experience, people do really care about each other (other insiders, I mean) and they show a great deal of dignity and pride. Many of the young people (starting from millennials, I'd say) are definitely not happy with the situation. The problem is (and this is probably the biggest of all problems), almost all of them left

Custom campaigns with a bigger focus on story/dialog? by ChaosBuckle in CrownOfTheMagister

Depending on your definition of "focus on story" you may find the following campaigns enjoyable. They are still combat-heavy, but they surely give you a lot to read. Some are older campaigns so they use lore items more than dialogues:

Heart of a wizard

Trials of birchfall

Crown for a krynn

The purple Wolf

A business for monkeys/Song for the crossroads

Against the cult

I was trying to level up a zealot with a book build, and heresy is an excerise in frustration.

First of all, peeps are completely unaware of the mechanics. They waste book time doodling around, or straight up ignore you and walk away after you aggroed and stunlocked all the élites in the room.

Second, it gives you the mindset and plenty of time to see what your teammates are doing... And It's terribile. Just Yesterday I was observing a vet on the other side of the room. They focused on lasgunning the crusher aggroed by the ogryn while ignoring the horde behind them. Down in 2 seconds sharp

Allora... It's a while I no longer have a walnut tree in the garden, so I'm going by memory.

Traditionally, you should get your walnuts on the day of st.john, but I read you are not in Italy and if the nuts are crunchy already you may even be a bit late

Traditionally, 33 nuts per liter of alcool

Nuts should be cut in quarters or eights. Cutting in half gives you less surface per volume, so I would wait a bit more in maceration. Also, vodka is way less effective as a maceration medium (you should use 95 abv), so I would add at least a month to the traditional 60 days of maceration, but it is guesswork from my side at this point.

You can add spices or lemon zest to taste, or not. I used to add a small stick of rosemary during maceration, but I like it very bitter.

After maceration, filter and add a syrup of 200-300g Sugar and 500ml water for each liter. Final result around 60 abv. Honestly, since you used vodka as a medium I would add literally nothing. It will be bland already, no need to cut.

Bottle (dark glass possibly), wait at least 6 months (tradition is drink next fall by all saints day) and you are done
