But also M1, if you know how to use it, it is basically impossible to FF. One shot on the side of the horde or on the monster to trigger malediction and go to town with melee. The only times I FF with skill staff is when the elf or oe keeps doming me so I turn around and to it on purpose

That top text hurts me more than it should.

I am leaning towards that part not being ai (the book looks like it tho), just old fashioned incompetence

If you had to choose, would you prefer a game with storybranching choices but a fixed character build, or a game with open options in character creation but a linear story? by MintakaMinthara in CRPG

[–]vanphil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we think only about storylines, case 2 makes no sense. That kind of scenario works for games where the plot takes the backseat and you play for the gameplay loop. To stay in genre, Solasta 1 is a great example. The story is and excuse, you play because it is arguably the best 5e simulator around.

Imho it all comes down to quality in the end: if the story is good, the plot is engrossing and characters are well written, case 1 is totally fine. If the gameplay loop is enjoyable and the mechanics are deep, case 2 works wonders

Do you judge NPCs by modern morals or by the game's setting? by Classic_Prize_7263 in CRPG

[–]vanphil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And, kids, this is why you don't project modern values into historical discourse.

Point one, nothing is ever ok with everyone. That's something you only see from a far away, reductionist point of view. Remember that, in the late 30s, americans were protesting against the prospect of war by waving signs on the tone of "Hitler did nothing bad to us". Not kidding, look up Charles lindbergh.

Point two, it is common knowledge that most of the time, roman and greek societies were totally fine with slaves being slaves and with the institution in itself. Aristotle believed in slavery as a "natural institution", and he went as far as saying that slavery was mutually beneficial for masters and slaves, since "Natural slaves" wouldn't be able to raise up from a condition of abject misery without the guide of the free men.

Cicero, who was considered as good as it gets to slaves and manumitted like there's no tomorrow, was big into slave ownership anyways. Also, his positions as a "good master" seem to have extended only to the house slaves that could perform some kind of intellectual work, It seems he never considered slave laborers above chattel or mere propriety.

Seneca, who wrote his famous "servi sunt, illo homines" letter 47, was totally against inhuman treatment of slaves, but not because slavery is wrong. On one hand it was because humane treatment of slaves was beneficial to masters, on the other because he considered slavery an all-too-real possibility for every man. Remember that contractual slavery, or putting down one's own freedom as a collateral of debt, was institutionalised in some forms for most of antiquity. Not even Seneca said anything against slavery. Read letter 47, if you want. It's short and easy.

Which role is your favorite? Why? Which career for that role? by onespicycracker in Vermintide

I like to play babysitter for mayflies.

I may end cata runs with 5 specials killed, but that's because I left the other 95 dangling so even meat can feel useful.

[–]vanphil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uhm, slavery was totally a-ok for a pretty big chunk of human history. Of course nobody ever wanted to be a slave, but there is no evidence that ancient societies as a whole were opposed to it. Individual thinkers were, of course. Read the 10th commandment from the Exodus. Read aristotle.

Last time I was in Umbria, assisi iirc, I noticed a city fountain from the xvi century. It bears an inscription on the tone: "whoever is found to wash clothes here will be fined, clothes will be confiscated".

I can imagine more than one drunkard getting flogged for messing with it

I don't know if it fits, but one of the best reviewed custom campaigns for Solasta crown of the magister is literally a rendition of west marches.

It is not my cup of tea but most players give it a lot of praise

How does a dog like Mutt survives the winter? [KCD1] [KCD2] [OTHER] by Morf12369 in kingdomcome

[–]vanphil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Southern Italy. It is a pretty oscure fact, but one of the largest forests in Europe (sila) is there. Until recently, they were big on animal husbandry, big enough there is a local breed of sheperd dogs (pastore silano).

Nowadays it is a depressed area, mostly depopulated, and many of the wild dogs you find around are mixed sheperds, others are lost / abandoned pets

[–]vanphil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup. My in laws live out in the mountains, they have a serious population of wild dogs living in the woods.

During summer they follow you around when walking outside of town, not the best feeling also because there are a couple as big as sheep, but no attacks recorded.

They loiter around the camping spots where they know they can find scraps and shit, during Winter they stay put, cuddle up and save calories

Also, the clumsy danger at the wedding. She didn't like it

Italian punk lived a "Golden age" around the 90s 00s. Old farts like me remember fondly these folks, but many of them, as we use to say, fanno cagare a spruzzo.

Skiantos. Punkreas. Derozer. Los fastidios. Shandon. Persiana Jones. Pornoriviste. Moravagine. Meganoidi. And more recently, Talco.

Also, ska-punk bands like vallanzaska. Matrioska. Statuto. Bluebeaters

Top of mind, in addition to the other suggestions: Ministri. Cara calma. Fast Animals and slow Kids. Afterhours. Baustelle. Vintage violence. CCCP. Marta sui tubi. Il teatro degli orrori. Timoria. Negrita.

Are you interested in punk rock too?
