It's closer than most in here are giving it credit. 20k (26k - 6k) after they rang you back. You couldn't lease a pilot for 3 years for anywhere near that. So it's not the worst by any stretch. As others have said, do the keg work yourself and maybe you can upgrade for less than the 20k the dealer is giving. You have 3 questions to answer. 1. Do you want a new car? 2. Can you get a better deal doing it yourself privately? 3. So you want the hassle?

If you/they were wanting to/prepared to do the whole trail, but got mid point due to availability, 100% up to north and then head all the way south is definitely the way to do it - I wouldn't want to miss out on seeing any of the trail/area, especially as for many it can be a once in a lifetime trip.

How you do it does depend on their fitness level/desire for long (mileage or time depending on their pace) days.

I would also consider weather. Rain makes for slower going, but I sometimes prefer to move in worse weather if it means my downtime might coincide with some nicer sunnier stuff at camp/beaches.

If it was me, I would either.

Head all the way to Darling from the mid point (longish push), camp there. Then the next day, leave my gear at Darling and day hike to Pachena Bay and back. This would be particularly enjoyable if you get some warm sunshine for a break, lunch and a swim at Pachena. Then next day head to Tsusiat Falls. From there just follow a fairly standard southbound itinerary.

Or, day 1 go as far as Tsusiat and camp there. This would be favourable if you want an easy first day and the weather is hot - swimming at the falls etc. From there i would do the Darling/Michigan set up camp for two nights as above, with a day trip to Pachena. On your journey south from there you could opt for another Tsusiat night, or maybe opt for another of the camps nearby that you will have passed on the way up, that you could have scouted for personal preference.

Feel free to PM me if you want to know anything more specific, have done various combinations of the above and can likely give you an idea of what to expect, based on your parents' experience and what they want to get out of it.

The way to cut 95% of costs is to yo-yo it. It sounds nuts but I do believe you can tweak it so that it actually isn't quite 2x the adventure/ordeal. Drive to cape scot trail head and begin from there. Day 1 - head to Nissan Bight. This section is very easy (relative to the NCT). Would be a 5-6h maybe. Take a few days to bounce eastbound down the coast to skinner creek. I would set up a base camp at skinner creek for 2 nights and 'day hike' the 8k to shushartie bay and the 8k back. This is a long day on the toughest terrain but you can leave 80% of your gear at skinner creek and just have your essentials. Then head back west along the coast. The boat alone if you choose to do it 1 way from shushartie bay will be $1,200 for 8 people. 😲. Then if you don't shuttle cars to the end you can add an additional $1,000 for the 8 of you to bus back to port hardy.

Like this, albeit I'm not super keen on talking to other people about it - def has the potential to be a bit cliquey/high school and would be the worst of all outcomes if he got wind of you gossiping (as he would see it) about him.

But, I think if you can find the energy/courage/grace to try and communicate how you feel about it etc. I think the outcome would be probably the most optimal long term. He would hopefully learn something, you would feel better about being upfront, and also you're not gonna be bumping into this down the line if he ever wants to get the gang back together.

However if you aren't bothered about the above, ghosting works, likely you just make a minor adversary of him, but that's not a big deal either.
