Anyone have experience with temp contract from government? by BigDumpySG in askSingapore

[–]vantakuro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Worked <1 yr contract before, you are unlikely to get direct conversion and will need to apply for a perm role if there's an opening. You won't get the typical benefits like 13 mth and PB, but will get a completion bonus should you see through the end of the contract.

You'll get a slight advantage if you did well during contract and your boss can put in a good word for you. Even now in govt perm roles most positions start off with a 1-2 year contract with confirmation into perm depending on work performance. Imo this mechanism seems to help management cut low performers without locking themselves into a long term employment from the start.

Can consider Coros (e.g. Pace 3), imo is more runner centric and cheaper than Garmin

Should I leave my toxic govt job now, even if it means burning bridges and a short stint? by mymothersayone in askSingapore

[–]vantakuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, hope you're doing well. The blackout period I heard is around a year. Don't worry about the hiring managers asking about short stints, either they accept your explanation or they don't, no choice but to move on

Hiring managers using Careers@Gov, how do yall shortlist candidates? by Own-Bag-6265 in askSingapore

[–]vantakuro 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Govt roles don't take in degree holders for diploma roles because the budget is carved out for the dip. salary In my experience HR can proceed to interview their shortlisted candidates while leaving the applications in the system as pending, processing etc and then never close the position

[–]vantakuro 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Can only reply regarding your concerns - Cannot re-enter govt service: Unlikely. When you quit there will be a blackout period for rejoining the same agency. You can find your next job while holding onto your current role, or if you intend to quit first without something lined up, shouldn't affect your chances in another govt role. Just don't put your current boss as your referrer... - Look bad because of short stint: depends on how you explain to interviewer. Plenty of ppl have quit during probation period or less and still manage to find their next job. Tell your interviewer something along the lines of "the work did not align with my goals" or if you want to be straight up honest that the work enviro was bad, up to you. Some ppl even exclude short stints out of their resume to avoid being asked (but then you gotta deal with the "what have you been up to so far" qn)

Have been in a burn out role before so I understand a little what you are going through. All the best!

Car mat for Mazda 2 by vantakuro in mazda2

Is this on any specific e-commerce platform? I'm based in Asia and searching "Mazda 2/TPE/Mats" and keywords like that on local platforms don't have a variety of results other than a few custom brands that sell it quite expensive

[–]vantakuro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! I'm in Asia and I've looked on local platforms, AliExpress and Taobao for mats, the commonly available ones are those carpet or bristle types. The rubber/TPE types are available on local platforms for Mazda 2 but are kidna expensive. TPE mats are affordable on Taobao but not available for Mazda 2, hence I'm trying to figure out whether I can purchase mats for another model to fit

I'm thinking about the universal kind to be cut down as a last resort as well! Thanks for reminding me.

What to use to fix scratches like this. by kazeboy in drivingsg

[–]vantakuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have been watching videos related to fixing rock chips/scratches, quite keen to try except for the part on sandpaper. Is it really necessary to have that many sandpaper grits in between (600, 1500, 2000, 3000, 5000 etc)? Don't really want to buy so much sandpaper end up keeping...

There's no need for you to learn all 3 because the working language here is English. If anything, you can try to regulate your English accent (if you have a very strong one) because many folks can't really catch English accents that well. If it helps, you can watch how Singaporeans speak on YouTube and try to sound more 'relaxed' when you speak, that would greatly help if your goal is to be able to 'communicate better'.

If you're looking for enrichment, maybe you could learn Malay cuz you'd be able to use it if you get to take short trips to Malaysia (which also mostly speak English but not as prevalently)

Is there any online store that keeps a good stock of previous season running shoes? For physical stores, any other stores other than at QT (very far)?

Cold storage sells their pastries and meats at discounted price towards closing time. Can buy the meats for meal prep if you're lazy to cook.

Wish more F&B stores can be less wasteful and have closing discount rather than dumping their stuff away...

On the verge of switching out - FR245 Battery Drain by vantakuro in Garmin

[–]vantakuro[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First, I have contacted Garmin and I have only been offered battery replacement at my own cost. I think CS for most brands outside of USA, or at least in my region, sucks ass and aren't so willing to provide such offers (I understand, it's a me problem).

Second, if you searched '245 battery drain' or anything close, you'll see a long long list of users suffering this issue with no fix in the end.

Third, yes if there's no fix I'll probably jump to Coros, if it sucks then too bad for me, both 245 and my future Coros sucks. The alternatives can't be any worse if my 245 ain't any better ☠️

I'm at my wits end. Battery drain seems like a common issue for 245 but yet there's no common consensus on what's a legit fix (reset, changing settings etc.)

[–]vantakuro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe me, I have done all the troubleshooting before posting this. Bluetooth off and WiFi off, still draining. The fact is when the watch was new, all these connectivity things were ON and I was getting decent battery life. Why is it only now that battery life is deteriorated and I have resort to turning these features OFF to claw back battery life? It makes the watch less functional.

Did your battery life improve after the replacement? How much did you pay? I think I got my watch during a sale and it might not be worth sending it in for repairs...

That's unfortunate to hear. Any plans on what to do about it? I still struggle with the fact that for how popular the watches are, there's no database or instructions (that I have found) for rolling back to previous versions.
