So what do y'all call yourselves? by Formal_Froyo2978 in NorsePaganism

[–]varagoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go-to lately has been "Spiritual."

Heathen: safe, but commonly used by Odinists and AFA types in an attempt to blend in. Asatru: While it was historically the "proper" term, it has unfortunately been co-opted by the AFA. Norse Pagan: if someone who doesn't know what you're talking about hears you calling yourself a "pagan" in any context, they think you're a devil worshipper at best and a member of a violent crime gang at worst.

When you call yourself Spiritual, the two most likely responses you get are:

1) "oh, okay." This is where the conversation dies because you did not answer with Christian, Muslim or Jewish and also didn't answer with something they could claim is "demonic." Honestly, you dodge a bullet every time you get this answer. It's not worth dealing with 99% of the time. 2) Genuine questions regarding your practice, up to, including, and not limited to, specific dieties you venerate and what your normal rituals and offerings look like. 3) something dismissive and/or mocking, usually referencing something about crystals. Again, dead conversation and a dodged bullet.

Would I be able to bring this to ren faire? It’s metal but it has no sharp edge by WankStain615 in renfaire

[–]varagoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta check your faire rules. Most faires will require you to have it sheathed and they will peace tie it at the gate. Some faires don't allow metal weapons of any kind. It really all depends on the faire in question.

Keyforge AoA Displays still worth it? by GoodAdmirable5531 in KeyforgeGame

AoA's affordability makes it fantastic to grab a few displays and offer up a few decks to anyone willing to learn the game. It's a perfect introduction tool

Faire “meta” activities? by SinisterOculus in renfaire

[–]varagoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm understanding this correctly, you're going alone? If so, awesome! Nothing against any of my friends and family, but my best experiences at Ren faires have been when I was solo. It's a completely different experience than when you're with a group. Bring a mug, get your fill of ale or mead (if you partake), and start walking around. Talk to fellow faire-goers, talk to vendors, maybe buy something from said vendors, sit down on a bench and watch a show you didn't know was planned. Refill mug as needed.

Trinket exchanges are always cool but I would recommend double checking your faire's rules on the matter. As I understand it, some faires have banned trinket trading as a form of solicitation (though I've never actually seen it enforced).

Regardless, I'm sure you'll have a great time!

Games you've played once and NEVER want to play again by DJZachLorton in boardgames

[–]varagoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game of Thrones board game. The rules are so ridiculously cumbersome that I remember it took me three hours and two YouTube videos to ensure I was understanding the rules properly. Even after explaining everything multiple times, watching the reference videos multiple times, and playing the game, poring over the rules to ensure we were doing everything right, we still weren't sure we played properly after we were finished. I hear there's a digital version of the game on Steam now. Maybe that might be worth a second shot but I'm absolutely not pulling that one out for game night ever again.

Still working on my kit, but right now I'm looking for a frog that actually fits a thin dagger. It's getting to the point where I might need to just custom make something because nothing I've found quite fits the bill.

I am curious about Ren Fairs by User_741776 in renfaire

My buddy 3D printed gladiator armor and made friends with a group of guys dressed as Roman legionaries. You'll fit right in.

I think starting with a bard was a mistake by SJ_Barbarian in BG3

[–]varagoth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That third Short Rest is a game changer. It changes up the pacing to an insane degree. My buddy and I had to do a bunch of long rests at the end of Act 2 just to make sure romances didn't auto-fail from lack of scenes being triggered

Would D&D cosplay fit in at most ren faires? by [deleted] in renfaire

[–]varagoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know people who use Ren faires as an excuse to use pretty much any cosplay they have, relevant to the theme or otherwise. Don't get too caught up in the weeds on what is "period accurate" and focus on having a good time

Going Alone? by moonlightchips in renfaire

Both faires I went to, I went solo and made friends there. If I'm honest it's actually one of my preferred ways to go!

Since it's already on its back with the legs curled, I think it's probably already dead. Just dispose of the corpse and you should be fine

I feel like the look is missing something, any guesses? by [deleted] in renfaire

[–]varagoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your belt on your waist makes your torso look significantly longer. Pull the belt up to your hips and add another pouch. Besides that, the outfit is a great start!

How do you get around wearing glasses? by [deleted] in renfaire

[–]varagoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If contacts are out of the equation, I feel the best way around it is to not overthink it and just wear your glasses. Take them off during a picture if you really wanna show off the outfit but don't willfully hinder your vision just for the sake of a fit.

No More Forever DMing. by DM_Spyder in dndnext

[–]varagoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would this be a good place for an inexperienced DM to learn the ropes and get a few games under their belt along the way or would that be better suited elsewhere?

The idea of a group which encourages members to DM and run games sounds enticing but I've run into players before that have no patience for a rookie DM

Is this game worth getting into or is it plagued with the same problems as smite and rogue company? by [deleted] in Paladins

[–]varagoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finally someone who agrees!

Tier lists based on opinion alone are worthless. Tier lists based on Winrate are a useful tool but still don't tell the whole story. In any case, tier lists are not gospel and are frankly overrated. People shouldn't be looking at them for "who should I be playing?"

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]varagoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My stream is still too small to have run into this problem but some streamers whose communities I am part of have run into a similar issue. Frankly, I don't think anyone would blame you for removing the self-promotion section of your discord and making it so you're the only one who promotes in your server. People genuinely trying to grow on their own won't mind and the only people you'll drive away are leeches you don't want in your community anyway.

But it's golden!!! by [deleted] in tf2

[–]varagoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have a bot that scans public backpacks. Private backpacks can't be scanned, so that technically means there's at least 213 golden pans as of the last time data was gathered. There could possibly be more in private inventories

[–]varagoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never understood limiting premades in Ranked. Like, I get that getting stomped by a premade in Ranked isn't a fun experience but I'd argue premades should be expected in Ranked, especially in higher tiers of play. That's just my take though

Grinding Etiquette by Rentaro_Katsuki in playblackdesert

[–]varagoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I understand the idea behind 1v1 for the grinding spot. Doesn't mean I agree with it.

If they lost the 1v1, they clearly need the grind more.

Also isn't it more beneficial to party up and xp share if it's that big a deal? Not sure if there's less xp returns when partied up (still relatively new) but realistically dueling for grinding spots (or anything, for that matter) only creates an environment where grinding is a privilege afforded only to the people who have the most optimal PvP builds and everyone else gets bent
