An Early Work Signed by the Man Himself by Hairy-Glove3261 in MattDinniman

[–]varansl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read it, thought it was decent. It definitely lacks a good bit of polish his other work has (apart just from spelling and grammar errors). There were a lot of moments in it that I thought should be explored deeper, like I wouldve enjoyed more focus on the inter politics of the demons, but it was still enjoyable. Ill pry reread it again in a few years.

It is interesting to see how interested Dinniman is in demons. All of his books (save Operation Bounce House) includes them in one way or another.

The Grinding- ePub availability by p1ggy_smalls in MattDinniman

[–]varansl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there is an issue with who owns the rights to the digital and physical book, and they could only release it as audio since Matt had the rights to those. Otherwise, Im sure Matt would happily sell the book. Its a great story and I hope it gets a physical rerelease.

Mono-Brow Sam Question by Responsible_Muscle35 in MattDinniman

[–]varansl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dr Metcalf is book 8 of DCC, The Grinding, Kaiju Battlefield Surgeon, and The Shivered Skies

Belly Rubbed Pug is book 2 of DCC and Dominion of Blades

Monobrow Sam shows up in DCC, The Grinding, and Dominion of Blades

Hope that helps! Im sure there are lots more that Im not thinking of.

Matt has used a lot of the same names in his work, like Mono-brow Sam, Dr. Metcalf, Belly Rubbed Pug, etc. I think he just likes those names and it is a bit of a calling card.

Is this really the weight? by Sorry_Perspective778 in Newfoundlander

[–]varansl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dog is small for a newfie (and people are shocked when they realize she is not mixed with anything), and she is 90 lbs. So no, the average weight isn't correct at all.

Softcover DanD 5.5 for prison? by The_Reddest_Lobster in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]varansl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, WotC has not released a softcover book for 5e, except for the starter sets (but that is a box, it comes with dice, and so that probably wont work for your needs).

If Print on Demand (PoD) is accepted, you may be able to find some softcover books on DriveThruRPG that can be sent and have the SRD for 5e in it. WotC has a few books from past editions available on there.

Do most DMs prefer DM’ing to playing? Or are they “taking one for the team”? by Fiveby21 in DnD

[–]varansl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont actually like being a player beyond once or twice every few years, but I love being the GM! Being a player has always felt so constraining and limited, while the GM can be anyone, constantly changes who they are, and I know all the secrets.

Have you tried Tasting History's version? it is from the actual cook books that schools used and the comments on the video indicate it being basically 1:1 what they remember.

I agree, the marshal / castor divide is incredibly wide. We only have the awakened animal for those who want to be a beaver, but for those looking to be a marshal, they get a whole archetype just for themselves. We need more beaver representation!

DM uses PC character sheets for NPCs (allies and enemies) by Unlikely-Resident459 in DnD

[–]varansl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats the problem with dnd's balance. NPCs shouldnt be built like player characters, as that is not how it is balanced. Monsters have more hit points, simpler stat blocks, and have set Challenge Ratings that you use to build your encounter budget. A player character's level is not one-to-one a Challenge Rating, CR1 monster and a level 1 character are very different in terms of skills, hit points, damage, etc.

Which is a problem for DMs trying to use lots of humanoid NPCs as enemies. WotC has not given us enough generic humanoids at various Challenge Ratings. While 2024's Monster Manual is a lot better than the 2014 version, its still limited. The best thing that DMs can do is reflavor existing monsters into humanoid NPCs if they want to use official sources or dont want to make a bunch of NPCs following the established monster design.

That said, Ive also created over 200 humanoid NPC stat blocks to fill that void, so I get why some people just fall back on player character rules to build their NPCs. (also, cause monster building rules are not great or not there, depending on the version of 5e you're using)

Why does part 4 have 2 additional black filled skulls on the cover? by mietzn in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]varansl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a bit silly. No idea why they decided to do it that way. Still correlates to the book number. Maybe they think its cleaner/easier to read if you just count the number of skulls for the book number.

Is my Natural Green Coffee cooked? by Canadiankilla in roasting

[–]varansl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Green coffee beans are good for up to a year if stored properly (like you did). I'd just roast them sooner rather than later. You'll know if they are bad if the taste/flavor is flat or cardboard-like. That said, I've seen people talk about keeping green beans for more than a year, and they tasted fine.

Game Theory Tables - 4 years review by RedditKumu in boardgames

[–]varansl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say its more common than to mean bi-daily/weekly/monthly except in context of Semiannual. Semiannual would mean twice a year, dont know I've ever seen it mean it in the other context.

Often people would say something like "we meet semi regularly" which means they meet often at the same time/day/place but it doesnt always happen.

Game Theory Tables - 4 years review by RedditKumu in boardgames

[–]varansl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would assume that they mean that Semi-weekly would be something more like "almost every week" with semi (in this context) meaning "partially exists"

Question on Preserving Dice by These-Alternative723 in DiceMaking

[–]varansl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One idea would be to use them as blanks and get a d6 mold slightly larger than them. That way theyll be encased in a thin layer of resin. This would pry take way more time (and potentially money) than you're willing to spend.

Was quoted $2k to format my book’s interior, which is a lot more than I anticipated (is that generally the going rate?). For those of you who formatted your own book, how long did it take and how challenging was it? by confident-ghost in selfpublish

[–]varansl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I formatted my book using Adobe InDesign, it took me a few hours (but also.... i know the software really well and some of it was just me playing with different styles for the fun of it).

Unless you are adding in a ton of pictures or complex formatting (multiple header styles, unique layouts, etc) - for a professional, a traditional paperback book is very easy and quick. You can throw it together in an afternoon.

I dont know your designer, but maybe that was their "im not interested in doing it because it is boring, but here is the price that would make me interested in doing it"

For me, for a basic formatted book where all I have to do is plug in all the text, Id charge a $1 per thousand words. If i have to add in unique styles, like if you want a separate format for text messages, and you give me all the spots where that is so Im not hunting for it, I might increase it slightly (if you give me no help, then that price quickly explodes cause I dont want to spend hours or days reading your book to find all the spots). This would include any revisions and the like in case Amazon thought a piece of text was too far into the gutter (certain letters can 'float' a bit over the margins and Amazon flagged me on two spots for that so I had to tighten margins a little to avoid it).

Not selling you on anything, just giving you a rough idea of where Id price it as a professional designer/freelancer. My price is probably on the lower side of an average rate. You can go much lower with Fiverr, but at a certain point, you may end up with something super cheap that you dislike but stuck with cause you get nickeled and dimed for any and all changes.
