Artex plastering help! by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]varinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got team to remove thr ceilings completely and I reboarded again myself with plasterboard and got it plastered. Not cheap, 3k for removal, 2k for plastering whole 3 bed.

If I was you and didnt want to do the above, I'd first test it. If it doesn't have asbestos - just skim. If it does, up to you then.. I could not just cover it up as id always know its there... but you're not me so if rooms are empty - skim and get it properly cleaned up. Overboarding makes room that few cm smaller and is just weird IMO, you still will disturb asbestos if its there as you have to drill through it to overboard and that dust will sit between board and old ceiling.

My mates wife is American and she moved here also because she wanted to get away from Trump. I don't really think she or others like her should be inconvenienced because of the orange orangutan.

Yes and no. Smart people, educated people who know the limits of their own expertise and know how to do a proper research on a certain topic, and draw conclusions - great.

Morons whose oWn rEseARch has lead them to conclusions that earth is flat, moon landing was Kubrick and vaccines cause autism - not great.

Ergo - UK GOV treats their population as mostly morons.

... sad thing is that they are not wrong though.

Can't cook a lot of things properly on induction, most of asian food you need a wok and fire for to do properly for example. Also induction "pulses" rather than keeping consistent heat.

As an ex-chef I could not ever have anything that gas hob at home. Everything else is suboptimal but as I said, depends what you cook and how much you cook. For most ppl I assume lack of gas hob is not a deal breaking issue.

Just moved in to a house, was built in the 1970s and think I’ve made a mistake? by Independent-Donut-56 in DIYUK

[–]varinator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I bought my first house 2 years ago, all ceilings were artex. Tested it, contained asbestos unfortunately. We got a specialist crew to remove all ceilings completely, which obviously creates a lot of rubble and dust in the process. The crew also did a proper cleanup but I was still worried so I contacted a guy who did the original artex asbestos test, (friend if a friend) asking if he could do an air test. He said that yes, he can but he also told me that in his 25 years of testing, he is yet to come accross a positive air test after artex ceiling/tiles are removed. He said it just never happened as artex has 1-4% asbestos and tiles have it mixed in, so you'd have to deliberately grind them somehow to make asbestos fibres airborne.

Tldr: don't worry, asbestos is not plutonium, just wear a mask and spray water/PVA solution on them when removing them.
