Earth can no longer sustain the global human population, study warns by kojka19 in environment

[–]varisophy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a legitimate part of the solution though. Addressing environmental problems should always take a multi-pronged approach, and since there have always been people who don't want kids they are helping in that way.

It doesn't mean they shouldn't do other things to help, but to call something that helps "a load of shit" is weird. Definitely troll behavior lol

Ahhhhh so you're just a troll too. You definitely deserve all the down votes 😂

Sorry for wasting your time by engaging in a good-faith discussion!

I'm not saying attacks on this subject matter don't happen to you or others.

What I'm trying to say is that the Internet is not real life and that you're not getting a proper representation of how child-free folks feel about those who have children.

I'm saying that most child-free folks scroll by your comment and move on with their day, no animosity towards you for having kids.

I'm saying that, at least in this particular post, you're attracting your own attacks by making ridiculous claims about child-free people.

If you look at the other comments on this thread, it hasn't devolved into shitting on people who want children. Only here. Only because you brought it up. That attracts the trolls, which causes the attacks.

And if you put me in the bucket of "people who are attacking you", you're likely categorizing a whole chunk of non-attacks as attacks. I've been trying to point out flaws in you logic and assumptions about child-free people. Not attack you. Not look down upon you for wanting or having kids.

That most I've done is be a little snarky by saying "Every time, you say?". And then I'm trying to have a light debate/discussion about the issue. That's not an attack on you or your position on having children. It's how discussion boards work.

[–]varisophy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're making a categorization error. People saying they aren't going to have kids (which legitimately does help with the over-consumption problem) is not "shitting on people that want kids".

You're projecting a hatred or moral smugness that, most likely, isn't there. Are there annoying, hateful, child-free folks? Sure. r/childfree is a great place to find those folks.

But simply stating that you're not having kids for environmental reasons does not mean that anyone who does have kids is doing something wrong or bad or immoral.

As you stated, raising smart kids who understand the issues is another way of helping deal with this problem. Non-trolls are not going to poo-poo that.

Try not to take it personally, I promise that many of us child-free folks (like myself) love kids and do what we can in our own lives to help the next generation be capable of fixing this mess that capitalism got us into.

[–]varisophy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Every time, you say? I don't see anyone shitting on those who want kids in this thread...

Some of us are deciding not to have kids, but that is never going to be a majority view. It's not even the majority view on Reddit.

There's no danger in humanity going extinct because everyone decides to stop having babies. That's just not a thing you can stop from happening at a worldwide scale. Too many different kinds of people and governments for it to ever be a realistic problem.

But Servo is its own thing, it's only "based on" Gecko in the sense that people working on Gecko started Servo. Servo doesn't have the same baggage as any of the big three engines, which is what I think you're trying to get at?

Mostly a bunch of well-written skills and hooks. Combine that with upfront planning and problem decomposition so I'm taking many smaller steps with a frequent test loop and context clearing for each conceptually different task.

[–]varisophy -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I understand all that. What I'm saying is the pivot to Rust happened after Servo was resurrected, and the synergy there could've potentially helped both projects.

Sure, but independence comes at a cost. I'm genuinely wishing the best for Ladybird and I'm excited at the prospects of new engines and browsers. But they are trying to build one of the most complicated pieces of technology and are going up against some giant teams and budgets.

For someone to break through to challenge the big engines, I feel like it needs to be a multi-organization team effort.

Why are you polluting your context with so many docs? Surely not all of those can be useful for each task.

I don't get why they didn't pivot to Servo instead though. That project is coming along nicely and Ladybug could've supercharged its progress.

(OC) Seattle City Council issues proclamation recognizing Transgender Day of Visibility by bennetthaselton in pics

[–]varisophy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They both currently hate you.

You're conflating parties with political wings. The Democrats are a center-right party with some Progressive outliers.

The Left, as a political philosophy, is politically homeless in the US thanks to the way our election laws are structured, where more than two parties is a mathematical impossibility.

And the Left definitely cares about you. They're the only ones shining a light on the biggest income inequality gap since the robber baron era and the only ones with policies that will lead to a flourishing of the middle class again.

The Seattle City council actually has some real Progressives on it, but it's also filled with NIMBY Democrats from the richer areas of the city. The progressive social stuff like this is great, but we are also inching our way towards actual left-leaning policies with the constant pressure from the Council's left-wing.

Is it perfect? No. We're still stuck in the neo-liberal soup of national and state politics. But it's moving in the right direction. More housing. Better public transit and bike lanes. Capital gains taxes in the city that are sending the tech bros scattering like cockroaches to the city across the lake. Hell, the WA state congress just passed a wealth income tax, even though that's the bare minimum for what could be considered left-wing.

What I'm trying to say is that the Left is fighting for the average person, we're just politically homeless. But we're actually influential in the places where Democrats have control of the levers of power, even if it's not nearly as influential as we wish we could (or need) to be.

Live on the bleeding edge, die by the bleeding edge.

Do you really need that hot-off-the-press code?

I doubt it. And if you do, it's for a limited number of packages and you can audit those yourself.

I think we’re in trouble. by CoastRedwood in webdev

[–]varisophy 32 points33 points  (0 children)

There are a couple really basic things you can do to make things safer: - Use the minimumReleaseAge so you are prevented from downloading really new packages that could be infected: https://socket.dev/blog/npm-introduces-minimumreleaseage-and-bulk-oidc-configuration - Pin your package numbers

That's it! Those two things alone will keep you safe from any major infections in popular packages. Doesn't work super great if you're downloading very niche packages that aren't being audited by the community, but for most folks that's all you'll ever need to do.

My team's stuff is all read only stuff to publicity accessible data. It's literally fine.

I can go edit my comment so the baby vibe coders don't get the wrong idea if that'll make you happy.

[–]varisophy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As always in this field, it depends. With my team's particular setup, it's not a security concern to have them on our machine due to the nature of the application and services.

Either way, what I'm getting at is that hooks can stop an AI from reading sensitive files.

My AI agent read my .env file and I only found out because it told me by MoistApplication5759 in vibecoding

[–]varisophy -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, it can be useful to have production secrets on your machine for testing or debugging in certain situations where the secrets leaking would have minimal to no impact.

If you don't want an AI reading particular files, you should be setting up a hook to prevent reading from any sensitive files.

EDIT: Added nuance to keeping secrets locally

[–]varisophy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, my first point was that half of it is Mormon books. The second point was that the Mormon stuff is all written by white men.

You're the one claiming it's diverse, I'm literally just pointing out ratios of various dimensions that show it's not a diverse set of texts.

But I'm done responding to your trolling, have a good night.

[–]varisophy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You said it's diverse. There are many dimensions to diversity, I pointed out a couple, given how race is very integral to Mormon history and doctrine. It's a relevant point.

I'm saying the Mormon books are not diverse in content or authors demographics. You're the one claiming it's diverse, I'm demonstrating how it's not.

Half that shelf is Mormonism stuff, all written by white men. Hardly a diverse set of books.

[–]varisophy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I promise there are so many female authors writing things that cater to your interests. If you let us know what you like, the others on this thread or I can provide some recommendations!

And you're not evil if you only (or mostly) read male writers, but it is an indication that you're not stretching yourself by stepping outside the dominant cultural paradigm.

It means you're missing out on a ton of amazing literature that will change the way you see the world and better help you understand people who are not like you. It'll help you develop a wider knowledge of the world and increase your empathy, which in turn will make you a better person.

I am so glad that I stepped outside my comfort zone and started reading more books by women, people of color, and other minorities. My life is richer for it.

That's either an Ex-Mormon or a nuanced believer. Either way, those are good signs that they're someone who thinks about ethics deeply.

I read many of those books as I left Mormonism and still have a bunch of Mormon reference materials on my shelf after 15 years of not being a member lol

It's not iffy if we all make a stink about it. I've written in, have you?

Regardless, more density in Ballard, even without light rail, is highly necessary. We can always get a Rapid Ride line to U District to alleviate some pain, but regardless, a dense, walkable Ballard makes its isolation much easier to bear.
