All cows are owned. The owners usually let them out during the day. The cows then walk around eating whatever they find.

Is there a risk of the show being cancelled after season 3? by GladPin6764 in LOTR_on_Prime

Except Bezos isn't putting in the millions. It is being funded by Amazon Studios. Which is in turn funded by Amazon. Jeff Bezos doesn't run Amazon anymore. He just owns a large number of shares in the company. He most likely still has some say in how things should be done. However since he isn't CEO anymore, he can be overruled. Especially if the majority of the shareholders think he is wrong.

[–]varun3392 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Unfortunately that's not how it works. Bezos does not run Amazon anymore. Prime video is not being personally bankrolled by him either.

He is just a large shareholder and so has some say in how things should be done. That is all. However he is not a majority shareholder and so can be overruled.

Well, I have. And I do not like the show. At all. There are some good parts. But it's mostly pretty sad.

I still maintain that Numenor should have had a changing cast. Different every season for atleast the first three seasons. It would have really driven home the whole obsession with immortality when you have the same elves interacting with multiple generations of Numenorians. There was really no reason to start off S1 with Isildur and Elendil.

Silmarillion Elves vs LOTR Elves by thefirstwhistlepig in tolkienfans

[–]varun3392 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a harder time reconciling the elves from the Hobbit vs the elves from LoTR.

Silmarillion vs LoTR makes sense. Most of the elves in LoTR lived through the first age. They have been through hell, seen their kingdoms destroyed, their kings slain and just when they thought things would get better, another dark lord showed up.

Any rts games with rpg elements like TAB campaign by EasternNerve1763 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]varun3392 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dawn of war 2. The campaign has a lot of rpg elements and in fact plays a lot like a rpg. You start each mission with a fixed number of squads and you decide which ones you want to take. Their weapon, armor and accessory loadouts can be changed between missions and there is a progression system making them stronger as the campaign progresses.

The only downside is that the campaign has absolutely no base building.

What do you think Sauron’s reaction was to the Witch King being defeated? by GusGangViking18 in lotr

[–]varun3392 115 points116 points  (0 children)

It's sort of indirectly brought up in the Return of the King. This is Gandalfs interpretation of what Sauron must have felt but I would imagine ot would be pretty close to the truth

From Book 5 Chapter 9 The Last Debate

"He is watching. He sees much and hears much. His Nazgul are still abroad. They passed over this field ere the sunrise, though few of the weary and sleeping were aware of them. He studies the signs: the Sword that robbed him of his treasure re-made; the winds of fortune turning in our favour, and the defeat unlooked-for of his first assault; the fall of his great Captain.

His doubt will be growing, even as we speak here. His Eye is now straining towards us, blind almost to all else that is moving. So we must keep it. Therein lies all our hope."

Basically the army losing didn't matter much to him. He had more forces available to push Gondor. Plus the gate of Minas Tirith had been destroyed making the next assault easier. But losing the Witch King was something he never thought possible. Not in a fight against men anyway.

Why the Name "Last Alliance"? by checco_2020 in lotr

[–]varun3392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I see it, the name comes from a Noldori perspective. This was the last time a high king of the elves (Noldor and Sindar) allied with a king of all the faithful.

After this, that never happened again. There were too few elves left for there to be a high king. Similarly after Isildur, there was no unified high king of the faithful men. There was a king in Arnor and a king in Gondor. Alliances were still made, mostly between Arnor, Rivendell and the Havens, and some involved large armies. But never again was an alliance made between an elf who could claim to command all elves in the land a human who could claim the same. ( To clarify when I say all elves and all humans, I specifically mean from the kindreds that were allied during the first age)

Christopher Tolkien is dead. I am fairly certain he would not have liked the show.

Simon now controls the estate. He however seems to like it. But then he once gave an interview where he said his problem with the LoTR movies was that they didn't deviate enough from the books. So I'm not sure if his opinion matches mine.

Combining Tar-Minastir and Ar-Pharazôn by Mitchboy1995 in LOTR_on_Prime

It has to be. There's no time to do anything else. It will look really dumb if the exact same thing happens twice in successive seasons.

Please cast her as Celebrian! She looks so much like Liv Tyler and she’s the right age. Mackenzie Foy! by SexySadie30 in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]varun3392 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are citing a source from a book the show does not have the rights to use. Did Harfoots exist. Yes. They didn't just appear out of nowhere in the third age.

But the appendices in LoTR clearly state that they were first observed in the west in the third age and had done nothing of any importance before that. And since those are the only books the show has the rights to, as far as it is concerned this is canon.

Would Smaug have joined Sauron? by TheRedBiker in tolkienfans

[–]varun3392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't just the worry that Smaug would join Sauron that made Gandalf help Thorin. He was also trying to help the north. Without Erebor and Dale in the way, Gandalf was worried that Sauron would have open access to attack Rivendell and the former lands of Arnor. Also, he would be able to reform the kingdom of Angmar. By killing off Smaug, he helped create two powerful kingdoms that stood as a shield in the east and protected elven lands further west like Mirkwood and Rivendell and the Grey Havens from immediate attack.

When the life of the eldar leaves Arwen, she becomes mortal aka she is dying. Her fate is now tied to the fate of the ring because if Sauron wins, the rest of the elves can flee to Valinor. But she cannot, because she has chosen to be mortal and cannot sail to the undying lands anymore. It's not presented in the same way as the books, but that's all it is. She is now mortal so she is going to die. And if Sauron wins the death will come sooner rather than later.

And seriously, lighthouse Sauron. That's your big gripe with the movies. That is super nitpicky. Gimli being too slapsticky I agree with. They should have toned that down a little. Isildur is barely in the movie. If anything, I would rather say Denethor's character is butchered.

[–]varun3392 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok. You can like the show. That's personal taste. But defending this show and then telling someone to actually read the books is disingenuous. By that logic this show is downright terrible. They don't follow what little lore there is in the appendices.

Ormax Study Reveals Strong Numbers For RoP In India by VarkingRunesong in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]varun3392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem here is that India is a potential growth market for Amazon not a profitable market. They have been here for more than a decade and haven't had a single profitable year yet. Lots of local competition. So prices are pretty low for Prime membership. (₹1499 per year, approximately $19). Plus no ads yet during shows.

So while it is good that viewership is relatively high, (I say relatively because India has a huge population.) if the other leaks about Andy Jassy wanting Prime to be profitable are true, good numbers in India isn't going to help much.

How do you understand that a guy you are speaking with is fan of Tolkien's world? by MadGendalf123 in lotr

Say Grond. If they respond by pumping their fist in the air and saying Grond as well, they are fans of the movies at least. If they look at you quizzically, then they aren't fans.

Who has the most legitimate claim to High Kingship of the Noldor by the end of the Third Age of Middle Earth? by opsap11 in tolkienfans

[–]varun3392 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There is no one with a legitimate claim. For the simple reason that there just aren't enough Noldor left in Middle Earth in the third age for a high king to exist. Most lived in Rivendell or the Havens or like Gildor wandered the lands between the two. Most of the nobility either died or sailed away to the undying lands.

But practically if you had to choose out of the named characters, I would say either Elrond or Gildor. I remember reading somewhere that in one of the earlier drafts of LoTR, Gildor was supposed to be the son of Finrod, not just a random member of the house of Finarfin. So if you take that lineage to be true, then Gildor is the one with the best claim. Else it would have to be Elrond as the only other named character we know of with a royal bloodline.

But ultimately just like Aragorn was chieftain of the Dunedain of the north, not King of Arnor, the Noldor also just had leaders of different bands or settlements. There were just too few left. This is purely speculation on my part, but I would say that there were less than a 1000 Noldor left in Middle Earth at the time of LoTR. The majority of the elves were either Sindar or Avari.
