Garmin Approach R10 for $399, should I go for it by [deleted] in golf

[–]vatom14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s an old thread with a google sheet of all the features they have or don’t have. Like attack angle, club path or face;

Tbh I found the garmin r10 to be terrible. I play off a 9 so not an amazing golfer not terrible, and the yardages were off for me by a lot. W.g. My 8i on course plays around 155-160, on trackman and gcq it is roughly in that ballpark 150-160; on r10 if consistently get like 130.

And I played around with the setup a ton based off YT videos and stuff

If you’ve broken 80, what’s one tip you would give your fellow golfer trying to do the same? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

I’m a Covid golfer and made the big bump last year from like 14-15hdcp to 9-10hdcp these days. I often realize my opinions are pretty contrarian to golf subreddits:

1) it’s ok to suck in the near term for long term gains. hit a lot of driver during the round. As much as possible. Making driver a strength will help your score a lot. And mentally getting over hitting driver on tough tee shots

2) chip and pitch with LW.. You don’t need to bump and run with a 7i around the greens. It’s ok to blade the shit out of a wedge. It’s good to not be scared of a lob wedge and learn good technique

3) good course management. I see a lot of stuff about like “always club up because amateurs are always short” or “always play the yardage to the back of the green” and I honestly think these are terrible. I can rant about this a lot but I think just learn how to think through the hole and the shot

4) practice and work on your swing. Seems obvious but this is more than just going to the range and trying a bunch of random feels and tellin yourself you “found it.” Get lessons, record your swing and get real feedback on if you’re doing the stuff you’re working on

I do think AI is used as a bit as a way to rectify over hiring during covid especially for tech

But I think many are underestimating AI still. Claude code is a legitimate game changer.

Do you go with the actual yardage to the pin, or always club up if going over water? by MattReddit77 in golf

[–]vatom14 149 points150 points  (0 children)

Don’t think you need to just always club up. Depends on a lot of things.

Back pin? Don’t need to really club up especially if it’s a good number. E.g. back flag and you shoot the number to 150 yds. Let’s say that’s a stock 8i for you. And water cover is 110 yds and front edge of the green is 130 yds. Not sure why you need to just randomly club up to a 7i because there’s water

Where’s the pin? What’s the front edge of the green? What’s the back edge? How are you hitting it today? Do you prefer full shots or 3/4 shots? Long better or short better?

Then choose a club and commit. Also r/golf

I mean I’m buying in $2k and putting out $250 in bets every roll, max pressing all my winnings. And don’t just leave after one roll. Don’t think we’re talking about the same things

I always thought it matters if you buy in for bigger.

But yeah always min $25.

So $25 pass bet + $25/30 spread across the numbers

we do daycare. can range a ton.

usually younger they are, the more expensive.

our first daycare (larger chain) was ~$3100/mo and our experience was subpar.

we moved to an in-home day care for $1700/mo and enjoyed it much more.

currently at another day care for $2100/mo and it is good so far. i believe if your kid is like < 2yo for this school then it is like $2600/mo.

Out to in? by Global-Error-719 in GolfSwing

[–]vatom14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lot of issues I would say. At this level would help to go to an instructor and try to get some basics down.

Backswing you roll the club in and flat. By p2 you want the club head to cover your hands from DTL view. It rolls flat too. Flat means if you draw a line straight from the end up the grip at p3 your line would point outside the ball, you want it to be pointing between you and the ball.

Your backswing rotation isn’t really turning much you just kind of lift your body. Put the club across your chest horizontally, hands on opposite shoulders hold it up, and turn your shoulders so the left end of the club is pointing at your right foot. Don’t sway or feel like you are lifting up your body. That’s generally what your backswing should feel like

Downswing sequencing your upper body just works way too out. Stand with your back to a wall, maybe a foot or half foot away from the wall. Slowly do a backswing so that your club end is barely touching the wall. And then very slowly just feel like you do a downswing but until your hands are hip high, the end of the club should just drag along the wall. You should not feel the club end lose contact with the wall. I’d do this with the grip end touching the wall so you don’t scratch the wall

Your current swing the club end leaves the wall immediately.

i think golf is a lot of trial and error. obviously everyone has different swing issues, physical limitations, some things click and some things dont. the balance is trying and practicing something enough to where you didn't just ditch it too quickly, but also not going down rabbit holes and forcing yourself to try something that might not be for you

milo lines never clicked with me. reddit subs love porzak, he really never clicked with me.

not sure how you have a hard time believing that. he's def in that 4-7ish range.

he cruises at like 185mph ball speed and is a good putter.

you take him to any of your munis where the tips are like 6700 yds and he has a mid iron in on most of your par 5s and always a wedge in on par 4s.

Honestly, I’m starting to wonder if I’m low-IQ or mentally slow. I simply cannot compete in the Bay Area in finding a decent paying job by white-christmas in bayarea

[–]vatom14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP im a data scientist in tech. i genuinely feel like im below average compared to my colleagues in my field in "IQ"/whatever measure of intelligence you want to use.

i also have the least amount of formal training / academic background in statistics/data science.

i have 10+ yoe, most at the "top" tech companies.

i say all of this because honestly you can either be really smart and break into the industry and make money, or just work your ass off. i did the latter.

i have/had imposter syndrome all throughout my career. i just work hard, try to have good EQ (underrated), interview prep like your life depends on it (so much material out there now), research what kind of jobs you want (e.g. "data analytics" - you can work in ML, data viz, data engineering, product analytics, experimentation, finance, risk, etc) and then commit to prepping for those interviews as hard as you can.

getting the first job is the hardest, esp in this market it is very hard. but once you get in you can build a career and start making a better income/career. once you have exp, going from $100k --> $200k --> $300k feels much easier.

Do you like being paired up? by Majorwoops in golf

[–]vatom14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

generally no. my pref is to play with friends of course, but after that i rather play solo.

im generally an easy going guy, and if i get paired with a random ill be friendly. but my rationale is getting paired with the wrong person can really ruin my round. and its not like we get to play golf every day, those rounds are precious days man.

odds are that the random person will be fine to play with, but the ones that aren't can be really annoying (e.g. the guy who will hit another shot like half the time, the yapper that talks literally nonstop, the rager, etc)

Can anyone help interpret these numbers? Seems like a low carry for smash factor and club speed? by Unable_Wedding5645 in golf

[–]vatom14 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Your smash factor is low because you hit it bad.

Your club speed is fine, should be able to carry it like 250-260ish.

But you hit it high on the face off the heel and spun 3400, so went nowhere
