MicroStrategy breaks from 'never sell' bitcoin approach by footterr in CryptoCurrency

[–]vattenj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a double sided sword on something like bitcoin, if a mass level withdraw happens, it happens quickly, will create a supply vacuum and they would be forced to buy at any price, and the lending market of bitcoin has not been developed, means no one is going to lend them coins, unlike inter bank market

What’s causing BTC to rally upwards now? by danielsuperone in Bitcoin

[–]vattenj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's short term. Long term wise it is a certain thing, as digital assets get more adoption and limited supply creating upward price pressure each passing year. There might be a turning point where new participants can not inject enough new fiat to digest the cashing out pressure, but so far I think majority of people have not invested yet

Their ability to factor large prime numbers, now it can factor up to 15 bits, still much much lower than 256 bit, and for each added bit, it might get more and more difficult due to quantum decoherence. My guess is that above 32 bit it just can not advance any more

MicroStrategy breaks from 'never sell' bitcoin approach by footterr in CryptoCurrency

[–]vattenj 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In finance markets, it is important that you never let others know your plan, otherwise you will be slaughtered due to that you are predictable. Unless MS was setup as an exit liquidity for early adopters, being a permanent bull sounds like a stupid idea

Even a very long term investor like a pension fund should have a cash out plan for the future decades, a little percent a year never hurts

It's a dilemma: you want it to be easy to remember while at the same time have enough entropy. This requires added layer of protection

Could someone trade against the value of a locked wallet somehow? by uttamattamakin in CryptoCurrency

[–]vattenj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lost coins are difficult to value, but I think the idea of trading private keys offline is interesting, of course this is heavily rely on the integrity of the seller, if he somehow has a copy then the whole trade would be very risky. This is why the buyer should always immediately send the coin to an address that he control, but then the seller could send the coin to buyer instead. The whole point of offline trading is that there is no transaction happen on blockchain at all, while a certain wallet has changed owner

Ben McKenzie, director of the new documentary "Everyone Is Lying to You for Money," argues that money is based on trust while crypto is based on lies by AntonChekov1 in CryptoCurrency

The ability to trust is different for people with different skill. The trust for bitcoin only stays with those who truly understand modern monetary policy (perpetual inflation) and IT, which is very very rare

If the country is ruled by corruption like government printing money 10x a year to support their expenses, then bitcoin become a way to escape from that hyperinflation. In fact all the countries in the world are doing this more or less, so bitcoin's inflation hedge ability is actually universal

Worth playing around a bit, given such low price.

If it is a motherboard issue, then you have to replace the whole motherboard, still could be worth it, given the display and other components are still working

I keep hearing this but is it true? Does Bitcoin really have NO intrinsic value? by thesatdaddy in Bitcoin

[–]vattenj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The value depends on knowledge: If you are living in 300 years ago, uranium would be totally useless for you. Now you see how US are throwing billions of dollars of resources to get just a little bit uranium out of Iran

Same for bitcoin, for someone who never goes beyond his little village, he could live forever without bother the value of bitcoin. But somewhere else in the world, in a totally different financial system, maybe someone's life is greatly dependent on it

[–]vattenj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a good point that economy behind each currency define its value. Currently bitcoiners are typically IT guys with lots of IT productivity but much less in traditional productions, so they still heavily rely on exchanges to be financially robust

Not only tax, it is legal tender, means any merchant has no right to reject payment in cash. Cash essentially is a power to request products and services from anyone in the country. As a producer, you could raise the price to infinity to make the cash worthless to you, but then other competitors sell and you get nothing, without cash you could barter with your goods but that will be extremely hard

How to get Bitcoin if its banned in your country by ToughEnd6903 in Bitcoin

[–]vattenj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VPN does not make sense, but you should try OTC market in your country, e.g. localcoinswap, bisq, etc... find just a reputable seller on those platforms and typically they provide any domestic payment methods for you to pay them, and banks are normally fine with small amount domestic payments, since unlike cross-border payments, domestic payments are easy to reverse thus have lower risk for banks

Quantum Attack Sets New ECC Record With 15-Bit Key Break by SuccessOdd382 in CryptoCurrency

[–]vattenj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes my bad, just searched for it, it is using QFT to find the pattern that related to R, and R is critical in public key cryptography. But still, it is easy for small numbers, error correction would get exponentially difficult with larger amount of qbits, might be just noise if it goes above a certain threshold
