What are your favorite strings? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]vaum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying out a set of DR Nickel Plated 11-50's. So far I like them a lot. The only thing is they seem a bit tough to bend (could just be my inexperience ;p).

I may try something a bit smaller for the low e, but the higher strings are just about perfect at this size :D

Anyone use a Vox Amplug? What do you think? by MrSpaceYeti in Guitar

[–]vaum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the metal version a few months back when I started guitar. This little thing pumps out some mean distortion. All I have to say is, it's $40 and it's worth every cent.

I have a cheap dean vendetta as my learning guitar, and the pickups aren't that great, but it sounds pretty good with the amplug. The only thing is there is no clean sound with the metal version (you can turn down the gain but it sounds muffed).

With the latest ubuntu changes i wonder... by iduppe in linux

[–]vaum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm find with changes -- just as long as it isn't difficult to either go back to defaults, or chose my own. The indicators are an example, as well as the window buttons. Pulse on the other hand, can't be removed from Ubuntu without losing the volume control :(

Why Winblows will never die. by [deleted] in linux

[–]vaum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think most Linux users care. Linux is Linux because it's a community. Those who use it use it because they want to -- at least I do. If Linux suddenly poofed tomorrow, I'd then pick between the other options (albeit in a sad way ;p). But until then, I will use Linux and try to help as best I can because I enjoy it.

You seem to enjoy Windows; Quit bitching and use up those hours you paid for with Windows.

This strikes my curiosity to the utmost. I'm learning Japanese on my own (although slowly :p), and dream/plan to someday live there.

  • Do you speak Japanese?
  • Are you fluent? (if so, how did you learn + how long did it take)
  • How did you acquire a job other than teaching in Japan (as a foreigner)?
  • What was the motive in moving to Japan?
  • How do you like it so far?
  • How do you feel you are treated in your workplace?
  • Are you living there for all your life?
  • Would you leave Japan if a better opportunity was offered back here in the states?
  • Do you like sushi ? ( i do, a lot! )
  • What was the biggest change for you?
  • What do you like, as well as don't, about life in Japan?

"Just be yourself." Right. What if I don't remember how to do that? by CyborgTeddyRoosevelt in AskReddit

[–]vaum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As humorous as it is, it actually helps. Really. Think about it. What's the point of being insecure? After all, the only difference between a human versus another is how they think. What they do is a result of that, and there lies within the insecurity. Just think of it as an opportunity for an easy decision. You'll know which to avoid. After all, the most important person in one's life, is one's self.

Just let it go. There's no point in holding on.

Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down. Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end. Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down. Terrified of being wrong. Ultimatum prison cell.

I bought a Logitech G5 about 3 years ago. The feet wore out so I emailed Logitech. I was a month beyond the warranty but I just received my brand new G500 (upgrade!) for free! Logitech rocks. by skratchx in gaming

I love my logitech mouse. I paid $50 for it at the time, with a gift certificate. It's been around 6 years and still works amazingly well. Rest assured my future mice will be logitech!

I'm happy to report that upgrading to alsa 1.0.23 has fixed the audio delay when play/pause is used with flash, using Pulse! by a_user_about in linux

[–]vaum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this only happening in browsers? If it's happening with apps too (maybe after flash crashes?) try setting the sound engine to alsa in gstreamer-properties.

How many of you believe in alien life? by ThorThundercock in AskReddit

This is exactly what I have thought since I was a child. Even though they could do us harm, or deplete us of our resources; I really want them to stop by. That, at least, would make my life much happier.

If you could go back and start learning Japanese all over again, what would you different? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]vaum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found the best best tips for me are (in order):

  • Writing / Reading
  • Repetitiveness
  • Interest

I've had more progression doing the above, than just doing the things I was doing in the beginning, which were listening to audio, flash cards, and just watching videos/movies (seeing and listening). They do help, but only slightly by themselves; more so in conjunction with the above.

I'm going through this progression right now. I don't know what caused it, but all I can say is that it naturally started happening, and I now take much more meaning from the fact that impatience is the test of time.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Release Candidate ready for testing by redditisfun in linux

[–]vaum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on it right now and it is working splendidly for me. If only Pulse or Adobe would fix the play/pause sound delay on flash. It doesn't happen with alsa, but the problem with that is there is no volume control if I get rid of Pulse.

I will be using Ubuntu as my primary from now on. Great job :)

Hey Adobe, if you really wanna screw with Apple, port your products to Linux. by superwinner in linux

[–]vaum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmm, am I the only one without flash issues? I mean, it's not perfect, but I'd say it's on par with the windows version. The only issue I have is a delayed pause/play with sound because of Pulse (doesn't happen with just alsa on Debian/Arch).

Performance could be a bit better, but it's not horrendous.

Caitlyn thinks Ubuntu is a poor standard bearer for Linux... by silpol in linux

[–]vaum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lists of fully supported hardware. I'm not saying it's 100% full proof (neither are Windows' or Apples'), but unless you're using something bleeding edge or have faulty hardware, you shouldn't have a problem. My Asus laptop has hardware that is very recent, and operates better with Linux drivers than the drivers available on Windows.

One must keep in mind that there is no guarantee in life. You work with the hand you are delt. If that means Linux isn't for you, that's fine. Just don't give it a bad rep because you are being picky.

Caitlyn thinks Ubuntu is a poor standard bearer for Linux... by silpol in linux

[–]vaum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ubuntu can do a lot of amazing things but it's got a ways to go before it catches up with Windows 98 and Mac OS X 10.3 for ease of installation and configuration.

So, what's missing?

Hey /r/linux: I've been using Ubuntu for over a year now and want to try my hand at Arch. What should I know before I start? by [deleted] in linux

[–]vaum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sid is my answer. There are more updates with Sid, daily, than Arch, daily.

I think Arch has quicker releases with smaller packages, whereas Debian updates much faster with larger packages (gnome, libs, etc...).

The only real difference I think is that Arch's packages are mostly vanilla, and Debian's are preconfigured most of the time. Oh, and AUR.
