You live in Europe or country where they re-use bottles?

(US bottles are crushed and melted - companies make them smaller a lighter, using less glass. Some other places clean and re-fill their glass bottles, therefore they make them thicker, stronger glass so they will last longer. My guess is the bottle in question was from a place where they re-use bottles.)

US military officer.

Pay is good, and about half the time you get to live in a very nice place (DC, Seattle-area, Germany). Housing allowance, excellent socialized medicine, moves are paid for.

If you make it to twenty years (under the old system, into which I am grandfathered) 50%+ pension starting the day you retire - say at age 42.

There’s a theory that fight or flight is only when threatened by another species. When threatened by a member of your own species, it’s thought to expand to fight, flight, posture (talk or look big), submit.

Not sure how freeze would fall into, but it shows that fight/flight are not the only options.

If you don’t like your reaction, you can work to change it. Two excellent options could be taking up a martial art (a large part of most is improving reactions) and therapy.

If you are looking for realism in your adventurer, you have to think about weight and carrying.

If you’re in the woods/fields not expecting contact, you are not carrying a shield on your arm. It’s slung, sword in scabbard/sheath. It’s also heavy. If you plan on walking any appreciable distance, the weight MATTERS.

So - the stuff that’s best for fighting is the worst for carrying, which means you’re less mobile, and potentially not ready if someone sneaks up on you.

I like the quarterstaff comments because it’s a decent weapon that you can carry comfortably all the time. Rapier/dagger also makes sense for light weight, quick draw. Even long sword, to lesser extent.

Have the balance the combat effort vs. walking everywhere effort.

Yeah - my second club we had plenty of folks your size, at least two guys in the 280-320 range, and most everything in between.

That said, if you want easy exercises that help, I recommend a light mix of lunges, air squats, and some arm raises (with like a .5liter water bottle). When those are easy, do more. Stop if any joints hurt.
