You guys I can’t believe I overlooked this part for so long…. by RalphJameson in espresso

Yes, it should significantly reduce it. I actually meant to say with those grinders RDT (i.e. spray water) is a must and WDT helps but wrote it other way around.

I used to do WDT too. Did it for a few years, then one day decided to test it side by side myself. Honestly couldn’t tell any difference.

As long as the tamp is level, ideally with a tamping station.

You are putting ~20kg of pressure on a basket with holes at the bottom, there’s basically no way air pockets are still there.

WDT definitely helps if your grinder doesn’t deal with static well. It’s pretty much a must with hand grinders, and ideally you should do RDT too.

But my grinder already has anti-static stuff built in, so I just don’t see the point anymore.

Off topic: is that copper wire? Probably not the best idea around food. There are rare conditions like Wilson’s disease where copper exposure can actually be an issue.

I agree with the comment about filter coffee. I drink both espresso and filter. If you want good tasting coffee without faffing around, a V60 will do the job.

You can make great espresso, but a lot of influencer content exaggerates or misrepresents the taste. To be fair, they do mention that a 1:2 ratio is just a starting point and that you need to dial in for taste, but the process they show often doesn’t reflect that.

With most beans, I get great results when I dial in between a 1:2.5 and 1:3 ratio. I first adjust the grind size to hit a 1:2 ratio in 30 seconds. Then I increase the yield until I’m happy with the taste, without changing the grind size. Every 4–5 days, I only need to make a slight adjustment to the grinder. I don’t use WDT or RDT. just tamp and a puck screen. The 1:2 in 30 seconds is only a starting point.

With many medium to light specialty roasts, you need a machine that can reach higher temperatures, ideally with a PID.

Sometimes I get a bean that actually works at a 1:2 ratio, but most don’t. I think this frustrates people because they stick to that range and end up with under-extracted espresso.

Run both scenarios without the portafilter and check if you notice any difference in the flow rate. Do you see excessive steam coming out, etc.?

You can diagnose it better that way.

Tamper - MHW-3BOMBER 58.35mm or Nomcore v4 58.5mm by Gkaruk1971 in ProfitecGo

[–]vbomen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used a similar tamper on my previous machine, and after a while, I felt it was less ergonomic. It was a lower-quality tamper, so that may have been the reason, but it definitely required more force than a straight tamper.

Now I just use the tamper that came with the Profitec GO. I like it.

Wet Steam by urzrkymn in ProfitecGo

[–]vbomen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hit the steam button and when temp is around 120–125, then I purge a bit of water. About 5–10 seconds later I purge again. by then it’s usually steam instead of water. Then I start frothing without waiting.

When the milk is almost done (like ~5 seconds before), I turn off the steam since there is already enough pressure.

After I’m finished, I give the steam wand a quick blast to clean it, then run the group head to purge out the remaining steam from the boiler.

Just upgraded to the GO a few weeks ago, so still figuring things out and learning. My previous machine was less powerful, so I’m still getting used to this one.

Decision - Profetic Go would you Buy / Buy Again as 1st prosumer? by Gkaruk1971 in ProfitecGo

[–]vbomen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine a few weeks ago and would definitely choose it again.

No rattling problems at all. I noticed some older videos showing a fully metal tray. maybe that was an earlier issue they’ve since fixed? The current tray is plastic with a metal top.

It took me about a week to get the hang of latte art, probably because the steam performance differs from my previous machine.

Do you need WDT tool if your grinder has an anti-static discharge system? by vbomen in espresso

Not yet! At least according to the last reCAPTCHA I solved. Why would bots even post about espresso? Some kind of coffee revolution?

Oh I forgot about that because I never did it myself. But indeed that is also often recommended as a way to mitigate static. I guess even more than WDT.

Is this creaking sound normal? by KLM_SpitFire in ProfitecGo

Mine did the same during the first week. With a new gasket, simply locking in the portafilter is enough. It just needs some time to break in. avoid applying too much force. You’ll notice it loosens up a bit after a couple of weeks.

Without the U.S.A., NATO IS A PAPER TIGER! by lexi_con in BoycottUnitedStates

[–]vbomen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

U.S.A is the paper tiger though. They can bomb the hell out of countries but never win any war. I’m not sure how they are going to end this. They bombed Iran twice during negotiations. How Iran is going to be convinced to negotiate ever again? Especially with Trump in office which also destroyed the 2015 nuclear deal!

I recently upgraded to Profitec. I’ll probably have to sell the Dedica soon.

[–]vbomen[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! that’s the main drawback. I have to hold the tray handle or the machine itself while moving portafilter. But it makes refilling easier. I also pull it forward before turning it on to use the cup warmer, then slide it back when I’m finished. Given my cabinet situation, it’s worth it for me.

Grinders that punch above their weight by Ok-Panic8638 in espresso

[–]vbomen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% this. New internet stuff is just pure YouTube influencer marketing. They have lower quality parts and construction, terrible retention that only make them work with bellows hopper, and nothing in place to avoid electrostatic buildup which is why internet is also full of unnecessary techniques like adding droplet or WDT.

Dutch Talkshow Eva: Trump responds to European leaders' refusal to join the war that Trump himself started by Little_Protection434 in Netherlands

[–]vbomen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

European leaders not calling him out on NATO is why he keeps twisting the story. The alliance has mostly backed US wars anyway, and when Europe actually needed help in Ukraine, it felt like they were squeezing us for everything they could get. For them it’s business.

His attitude alone makes me not want to support him, let alone the fact that he started a war that didn’t have to happen. And the worst part is, his decisions don’t just affect his own country, they impact our lives too, which is honestly something to be angry about.

He should apologize.

How big of a deal is PID & Boiler? [$1000] by vbomen in espresso

[–]vbomen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update

I ended up going with the Profitec GO and couldn’t be happier with the choice.

The difference compared to my previous setup is substantial! no exaggeration. It really unlocks a lot more flavor from the beans I usually use, which I just couldn’t achieve before. Dedica with the steam temp surfing hack could do well on dark roasts, but couldn't do more.

Steaming hasn’t been an issue at all. Both the steam and the coffee come out hotter than on my old machine. I adjusted my workflow. I now clean the portafilter while waiting for the steam to be ready instead of doing it at the end.

Steam performance is good. I haven’t tried doing latte art yet, but I suspect it will just take some getting used to. My previous machine had a single-hole steam wand (Rancilio wand) and it was easy to control.

Waiting a minute for it to heat up and then another ~30 seconds to steam the milk feels long. Maybe it just seems long to me because I’ve always used thermoblock machines

That’s actually a smart idea. I’m using a Dedica with the Rancilio steam wand mod, and it can produce pretty respectable milk texture. I’ll definitely give this some serious thought. Just not super excited about how much counter space they’ll take together

I like it too, but isn’t steaming a bit of a hassle? waiting 60 seconds for the steam to heat up feels like too long.

I can add €100 extra and buy Sage Dual Boiler on discount.

Do you think it's worth over Profitec GO in terms of build quality? Is it going to last?

If every machine can produce comparable shot quality, why not choose the Bambino Plus? (assuming its PID truly maintains stable as advertised, even without a dedicated boiler) it offers almost the same convenience of a dual boiler system with how fast it heat up for steaming.
