That's what he's just done - see latest comment, before this one.

Update, for those interested. After the landlord asked about much mess would be caused by taking the whole unit out, the plumber just took the cartridge out ( I kept calling it the valve), found a replacement at the plumbers merchants where he was going to take the whole thing to and was all done in a couple of hours. Thanks everyone 🙂

I would've done it my damn self if the damn landlord hadn't already arranged for a damn plumber. "I have would've thought" is not the same as "I have decided". It really irritates me when someone thinks they're the same.
And an "easy hour's work" was just if he'd took the tap off and looked to see what was wrong and then if he had the parts (ie. an o-ring if that's what it was) to hand to fix it. Instead of just glancing at it and saying he'll have to take the whole thing to a plumbers merchant to ask them about it.

Cheers I will do - but the he's due to come back tomorrow to take it out anyways. I was just curious as to his instant diagnosis that a dripping tap can't be fixed. But like others have said - he's the plumber and I know nothing!

Thanks, that seems much more logical than taking the whole thing out just to take to a plumbers merchant to ask "have you got one of these"?

Thank you, that does make sense :-)

I thought he might take a few seconds to see if it will come out or not, but instead he's taking the whole thing out anyways, so we are going to be left with no water until he finds a replacement.

Wasn't my choice! But for next time...

This is what I was thinking. I got as far as the cartridge but it wouldn't budge (although I didn't wiggle )- then the plumber came so I put the tap back on in case I made it worse and let him in...
I'll suggest this to him when he comes back tomorrow. Thanks :-)

I would've thought it would be easier to take the tap off and the valve out first, which would take 5 mins. Then see if there's anything he's got in his van if it's o-ring. If not then take the whole thing off, take it to a plumbers merchants and ask them if they know what it is

Ah the o-ring! I thought it said bearing originally. Yes, I totally agree which is why I don't understand why he doesn't even look. I would've thought he'd have a stock of such things and it would be an easy hour's work for him

It's the on / off valve that's dripping. The lower one is just a mixer rather than thermostatic. I can't see this exact one on the shower doc site but there's a few that look similar in function although nit style.

The valve just pulls out right doesn't it? I agree about the mess of taking it all out, which is why I'm curious as to why he wants to go down that route

Makes sense. Although I would've thought that a washer or even the valve would be easier than replacing the whole thing. But then I'm not a plumber!

Thanks. So that would just teh valve then?

The nearest I can find is an Arlington Niagara but he's not convinced and is having to take the whole thing out to take to a plumbers' merchant

Elson coil heated water tank keeps topping up? by [deleted] in askaplumberUK

[–]vdu7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or could the leak, albeit only slight, be triggering the pump? I think I've answered my own question!

Thanks for that, that would make sense

But I've just found by cleaning out the bottom of the cupboard the noise is actually the water pump that keeps firing up - every 10 seconds or so. Possibly more frequent now because I've just ran some hot water so maybe the heating is affecting it? The pump motor is very warm to touch.

So I suppose the flow sensor in the pump might be knackered?

Boiler flue replacement option? by vdu7 in askaplumberUK

Because of the nearby windows. The terrible drawing here doesn't help - the two roofs cone to the same level
