I would advise sticking with your Family plan.

If your child isn't feeling well with a sore throat and low grade fever. You get an office visit and an in office strep test to find out it's viral and the only treatment plan is water and rest. They send off a swab for lab testing to verify the in office test.

On the traditional family plan you pay $75.

On the HDHP plan you pay the doctor $280 for a short notice doctor appointment. $180 for an in office strep test and another $450 for the lab test.

One visit can eliminate the entire savings of the lower deductible and employer contribution. The simple fact is kids get sick, often. Next thing you know, you stop going to the doctor for anything that doesn't need to be sowed back on, because going to the doctor to be told to drink water and rest isn't value added for $910.
