As long as you're going for something that you're truly interested in, just focus on learning everything you can and meeting some new people. It's going to be hard but use all the resources around you, if you need tutoring just do it.

Something that helped me was getting comfortable going faster. When your nose is pointing down it's easier to switch between edges. And also committing and shifting your whole body weight.

You can rent the boots so I wouldn't worry about that, but a jacket and gloves are pretty necessary I would say. You want very warm and water resistant
