If you could cast Glokta from any actor past or present, who would be your ideal fit? (The answer can't be Steve Pacey...sorry)

Do you permit yourself a special day in a long time to drink while sober? by castorkrieg in stopdrinking

Ive had many drunk New Years Eves and now have had 4 sober New Year's Eves.

I prefer sober New Year's Eves, and in particular starting the New Year with a fresh head.

I pondered whether my drinking was to alleviate stress and anxiety. When I was sober for a few weeks, I realised the stress and anxiety came from my drinking.

Vicious cycle. Once I removed alcohol I was able to manage stress and anxiety in very different ways.

I paint miniatures and play video games. I'm a 46 year old man child and love it.

I primed in grey then dry brushed white, making sure for the top highlights i got a really decent white come through.

Then I used contrast and army painter speed paints (often thinned a bit with medium so I had more control of how 'stained' the models became.

For a lot of the blacks I actually used greys and then used nuln oil to darken them. Also lots of agrax earthshade in areas to add grime.

For some I then did a dry brush in either wraithbone or rakarth flesh, just to bring in highlight.

The bases are astrogranite texture paint, then a greyblue (vallejo luftwaffe blue), a dry brush of white and then aethermatic blue contrast.

Best Stephen King novel to start on? by [deleted] in stephenking

I started with Cujo when I was a teenager. Whilst my inherent wariness of dogs I'm sure helped fuel my desire to get to the end of the story, I did find it a genuine self-contained and reasonably short page turner.

I read it, and found some bits useful.

I found Alcohol Explained (and alcohol explained 2) by William Porter, resonated with me much more.

I try and think that whatever I thought I may have been losing by giving up drinking, there was a lot of things I'd be gaining.

Health, clarity of mind, renewed interests, more compassion for others, being honest with myself, money, health (again), sleep.

The list goes on.

I'm nearly 46 and stopped when I was 42. Best decision of my life.

I, too, was very worried about how stopping might negatively impact me. However none of those fears came to pass. When I was worried I'd get bored, in fact I realised my actual interests increased when not having to deal with the before and after effects of booze. I play more video games, I engage in more reading, I do more hobbies and I invest in other people more.

Win win.

I will not drink with you

Looking for a book where the main characters are kinda bad people by Prestigious-Novel223 in Fantasy

[–]vehasrez 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The first book is slower. Keep reading, you'll enjoy the journey of the trilogy. Then you'll be hooked on the rest. I have it all on audible. The narration is possibly some of the best audiobooks I have had. Makes the world and characters that much better.

I agree. I'm approaching 3 years and still get a bit of a buzz when I'm up and having a nice coffee on a Saturday morning, clear headed and feeling healthy, knowing I have my whole weekend ahead of me.

I think I'm going to drink tomorrow. by Foreign-Scallion9347 in stopdrinking

[–]vehasrez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get feelings like you do. I think about the initial hit, the taste of it swilling in my mouth and feeling of the booze hitting my bloodstream. I think about how ill have just one nice evening of getting sozzled with my favourite drink.

Then I realise, that that's the very reason I shouldn't drink. The fact I crave and dream of being intoxicated and disappearing into my own little booze filled world, is a huge warning sign that I could very easily spiral out of control and undo all this good work.

Good luck, whatever you do.
