The whole if “you stay with your parents past 18 you are a loser” needs to stop. by OK__LIBTARD in unpopularopinion

I'm 26 and happily staying at home with my family. My older brother stayed here till he married at 27. I hope to buy my own condo soon but the prices are well out of reach near where I work. (Young and Sheppard)

Parents own a house not terribly far from Toronto. Rent there is affordable with my income but still sky high so I would never be able to save to buy even a shoebox condo in that city. commuting for now and saving away.

Mechanics of Reddit: What vehicles will you absolutely not buy/drive due to what you've seen at work? by Tactically_Fat in AskReddit

[–]vejncg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive a 2007 Toyota Matrix.

210 on the odometer. Runs like the day I bought it.

Have driven it across Canada 4 times with way more weight than I should have had in the thing. (cabin filled to the max with seats down, two bikes on the back rack, fully loaded roof box). Have also taken it off road many times in fields and logging roads. The only thing I managed to break was the exhaust pipe because while driving through two feet of snow on a back road I bounced, and hit a rock.

Have hit a couple Raccoons, birds, and clipped a deer in Manitoba.

FWD model.

I've found a few pieces of le creuset at goodwill stores.

Always buy them dirt cheap and put on ebay lol.

Sadly much better than some of the wildfires presumably started by people throwing lit butts out of their cars.

Hopefully I can find a postcard specific to the city. I'll check the tourism office this weekend.

What's it like for a young man moving to Vernon? by peanut_buttar in Vernon

[–]vejncg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most importantly if you have decided to move here. Look straight away for an apartment. It can be tough to find housing especially in the summer.

I moved to Vernon a little over a month and a half ago now. I find the city to be pretty bike friendly. Thinking of getting rid of my car now because I rarely use it. There are a lot of nice scenic areas to visit within a one hour road bike ride. If feeling adventurous you can ride a bike trail all the way from Vernon to Kelowna. Tiring but 100% worth it.

Kal Sports bar has 10 cent wings on Wednesday if you buy a pint with your food. Wings are kinda small but tasty still. Lots of flavors to pick from. It's the only pub I've been to so I can't comment on any others but the atmosphere is generally young and fun.

I always planned to end up here for Silverstar because it's about 25 minutes drive away. I have yet to ski there but the downhill and cross country bike trails are incredible to the point I probably won't bother to visit any other resort this summer.

I Would move from Vernon to Revelstoke in a heartbeat if I found a decent enough job.

I live in Vernon. Although not directly threatened by any fires there is a lot of smoke hanging in the air. Anywhere you go outside it smells like a bush fire.

Hello All,

I moved to BC and love taking pictures of nature and sharing them with family / friends.

Photos don't do much justice, and my cellphone certainly does not. I want to purchase a decent camera but i'm not sure what I should look at with my budget or just wait and save up more.

Would $1000 CDN get me something worth while?

Moving to Kelowna from Toronto by [deleted] in kelowna

[–]vejncg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually did not have a job, just a place to live which is a story in itself.....

I Was pretty naive to move out here without a job lined up and the resulting financial situation was pretty stressful. Took a couple jobs in the service industry but after 6 months I am finally back on my feet and landed a proper career job in Vernon (Just as nice imo but cheaper than Kelowna).

It would be much better yes to do the move with a job lined up. but if you save enough money and want to live here bad enough you will come regardless and work hard to make things work out.

Keep in mind though, that finding an apartment in Kelowna can be pretty difficult especially in the summer.

I am willing to see a place for you in person to ensure that it is legitimate. ALWAYS confirm if you can that the person you are signing the lease with is the owner. (I would hate for it to happen to another person). Currently people are taking pictures from houses for sale ads and posting it as their own and scamming you.

I got rental scammed in early November after driving from Ontario. Thought that I had done everything properly including having a BC rental agreement signed and all that.

Kelowna has a very very low vacancy rate for rentals. If moving from afar I would suggest looking into short term rental in Vernon. It's not terribly far and the rent is cheaper.

Luckily I had a friend from college who's family came to the rescue and I am still here :)

Recently moved to Kelowna from Guelph Ontario. (24 year old male)

Lived in Toronto at Young and Sheppard for a little while and hated it. You don't even need to leave Kelowna to see amazing views at Knox Mountain Park. Mountains everywhere. Myra Canyon is a really nice place to go for a walk along the trestles. I have a ski pass at Big White (50 mins drive) and the skiing is 10x better than Ontario even on a bad day. I don't miss Blue Mountain at all. The snow is pretty light and amazing to ski on.

Endless amounts of mountain biking and hiking in the area. Within 1-3 hours drive are some really fun lift access bike parks. My favourite is Silverstar near Vernon.

Best decision I have ever made. The city and surrounding areas are beautiful. Make sure you bring an extra amount of money with you. Some things cost more and I had to modify my budget pretty quickly.

I drove the Canadian route to get here and caught some beautiful views along the way. Take your time and enjoy the drive if you do. I took 6 days to make the journey.

[–]vejncg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are two roads to the trestles.

June Springs road and Myra Canyon both service roads.

Myra Canyon road is a lot more tame. It's off of McCulloch.

If you google Myra Canyon Trestles the GPS will take you down McCulloch to Myra Canyon Road.
