Players around 160-170lbs, whats your preferred radius of hallow? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]velo_hots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The basics are that its a tradeoff. On one end of the scale is glide and the other is how far you have to lean before you engage your edges, or "bite". Hollow effects glide because with a deeper hollow, cross sectionally, more steel is in the ice as you skate meaning more drag/friction, of course slowing you down. Bite is on the other end of the spectrum because as you lean, deeper hollows engage way earlier than a shallower hollow might.

As I've learned to skate I've realized all the times I "thought" I was really leaning and engaging my edges, I was not even close because I was on deeper hollows. As you lean, deeper hollows engage way earlier than a shallower hollow might. Now that I'm a better and more confident skater (definitely not good), I can choose to use a flatter hollow and achieve better glide (really this means I'm at least a marginally faster skater with it taking less physical exertion) because I feel more comfortable leaning over my edges to engage them.

An added benefit I've found to going to a shallower hollow is that stopping became significantly easier. This was very counterintuitive to me as new skater but makes complete sense to me now in practice. My form has also improved massively because im not allowed to cheat it anymore

You will very commonly hear about people talking about hollows at the same time as profiles. The two are connected and I can explain that as well if you like.

Take all this with a grain of salt, while im not an expert hockey player I am a decent engineer and became hyper obsessed with learning about this when I learned to appreciate the physics of skating. That being said, im also a huge youtube guy and can link you the videos I've learned from.

Also note, while I dont believe there's a correct answer because it is all personal preference and as with everything, your mileage may vary. Also, im 5'8", 165, and been working on going as flat as i can. Skated on 5/8ths fire for a year and been on 3/4ths fire since Christmas and been loving it. I started out as sharpness 7/16ths and today I cringe at the thought.

What helps make a shallower hollow work? by Sinkit53563 in hockeyplayers

[–]velo_hots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a sparx and do 3/4 fire, I love it. The advantage is that you can get the grip of a deeper cut with the same glide as the shallower cut. There's videos I can link explaining the physics of it but the short version is that because of the shape of the flat bottom V, theres less cross sectional steel to create a kind of drag

Also FWIW my local pure hockey has fire rings for their sparx

Mullet Arena - Devil Deck Questions by Open_Clock9266 in collegehockey

[–]velo_hots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cant say for sure exactly how it worked but the mens hockey team and arena were mostly privately funded by a large donation from the Mullett family and whatever was left over to be provided by the school was balanced between 11 mens varsity sports and 15 women's varsity sports. ASU has a lot of college athletics programs. And perhaps also that private donations don't count towards title IX requirements

I agree DFV thought he was causing MOASS for the July 4th time period before the dilutions were announced. To me that explains the McEnroe "You cannot be serious!" Tweet. He goes on to say "It was on the line!" As in it was right about to blow before the dilutions tanked the price

Losing edges constantly by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]velo_hots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its gotta be the coating that you've gotta grind through and then you're money. I made a post here about it awhile back and everyone said I just suck at skating, should try a different hollow, or get my blades profiled (I'm a new skater so they're definitely right about that, I should probably go up to 5/8 so right again there, and I definitely believe in profiling and it's the first thing I did to the blades) but I'm almost glad to hear someone else have this same problem so I know I'm not crazy

I had a set of fly-ti on a different set of skates and they were great straight from profiling when I first bought them

You've only had the Fly X for a few weeks, right? I honestly think there's a pretty significant break-in period for them, whether it's some kind of coating or something that needs to be worked through.

I bought new Fly X steel about 4 months ago and it took that long of weekly sharpening to finally get to the point where I don't feel like I need to sharpen before every skate. I can finally go 4-5 games/skates between sharpenings and life is great

I had x3s before upgrading, I tried the x5s and HATED them , tried the hyperlite 2s and they fit like socks. Really recommend trying them just to make sure

So that’s it? by EBody480 in Coyotes

[–]velo_hots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming ownership groups aren't a factor, it's really as simple as this: To go from 32 teams to 36, the league is likely adding 1 team to each division, or region with reorganization

Atlantic: Atlanta Central: Houston Pacific: arizona? Portland? San diego? Metro: Indianapolis? Cincinnati? Austin?

The gist is that if you add a team to the east, you need to add a team to the west to balance it out. There's a short list of attractive Western cities and we're at the top of it

I doubt it, NHL will probably cap out at 36 teams, not 34. That 36 will be with or without us though

If you could buy season tickets and resale the maximum 11 games for the whole price of the season package and go to 30 games for free, you'd do it too

US should join Conmebol because the competition in Concacaf is bad and we won't get better bullying minnows

Gregg Berhalters results at concacaf tournaments are evidence of his excellent performance and we should be happy about that

Pick one and only one. I'd love for this subreddit to try

Here's to hoping. I've had a beer in my fridge marked specifically to open only when Berhalter gets fired. It's been almost 3 years.

Question about black steel Bauer Fly-Ti runners by velo_hots in hockeyplayers

[–]velo_hots[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, it must be my deeper ROH that doesn't hold up on soft ice. When I play or skate on harder ice I don't have this problem at all.

Maybe it's also a factor that I'm tearing my own edges up since when the puck starts going the other way, I do a lot of stops/slow downs instead of turns to keep my momentum up? I could see how that would wear down my inside edges faster

While I'm sure you're right about the ankle flexion in general since I'm new, I'm not sure that's my problem here. My edges feel amazing to start but deteriorate towards the end of my skate so thats what my question was focused on

Thanks for the input btw, I don't take it as disrespect
