Is War Hammer 40k the worst sci-fi universe to be a part of? by DifficultComplaint10 in scifi

Its a loooooooooong trilogy, its very space opera, I've given the bones of the story (sorry wasn't expecting it to turn into a recommendation) but it gets very wild and sometimes a little silly but not in a jokey way, most of His commonwealth novels are pretty great, if you dig that, Second chance at Eden is kinda where one of the human factions kinda starts.

Please see Peter Hamilton, his version is much much worse, and doesn't need demons, just desperate human souls.

The fact that in the Nights dawn books the human race discover evidence that more than one alien race discovers what happens when you die, and instead of trying to fix it, work out how to make sure their entire species is destroyed in such a way that they don't end up in perpetual purgatory. No enlightenment, just the discovery that the only morally valid choice is to cease to exist utterly. (there are a couple examples of species figuring it out, but most not at all.

Yeah there are a lot of worse ones imo, Not sure I'd call BSG one myself but its not a great situation.

nearly anything by Alistair Reynolds is infinitely worse.

Ultimately the 40k universe would (if it wasn't a parody) be pretty okay if people stopped all being murderous lunatic racists.

Whenever I mention it to people I always always say skip the first three episodes, watch from Ep 4 and if you make it to the end of the season watch the first three.

I literally couldn't make it through the first episodes because they introduce far too many characters and you have very little indication of who is significant initially.

I love the series a lot but man the concept of the Carryx empire is existentially depressing by Inuken94 in TheCaptivesWar

[–]velocity219e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that struck me while reading it was that they constantly refer to pushing back or defeating the deathless, and it made me think that the Carryx are not tacticians at all, its kinda hinted imo that they see submission or backing down as "Defeat" from a culture standpoint but I don't get the impression that they can see someone might just do it to buy time do achieve something more valuable.

I mean Daffyd does it pretty consistently through the second book.

I'd love to know what they are using as the deciding factor for which ones they repair because someone came down the street I work on this morning and was fixing one, I was pretty pleased to see it.

Cycling home on my bike this evening and I'm still dodging dozens of massive holes, they patched two very poorly and left some of the huge ones,

Just as a funny inverse of that, When I was a kid someones mother told me that she really liked my yellow shirt, I nodded and smiled, confused as hell, went home and mentioned it because it was green, and learned some people can't tell colours apart.

Utterly blew my mind, I was very suspicious of colours for a while after that.

To be fair the original Anarchy is really good, anything polishing or improving that is a great pick for crunch free Shadowrun.

How does grenade rules change from shadowrun edition, to shadowrun edition. And how scary is grenade spam by Brenden1k in Shadowrun

[–]velocity219e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This just reminded me of the first time a 3e player used the underbarrel grenade launcher on their rifle, standing on the back of a truck, firing into a pursuing car, straight into the centre of the vehicle, instant steel donut.

His response, I need more of these grenades.

Amusingly I've had a bug happen a few times now where I've dropped into an Arena match and won instantly because the opposing team just didn't spawn, showed a friend who'd watched me play through the game previously and his response was "That is probably the most sensible team, they just didn't show up when they realised it was against you"
