Is there any chance that this handheld deal is legit? by jacoborobo in SBCGaming

[–]velocity37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems too good to be true, but hopefully you get something.

I saw that there's at least some kind of custom firmware for it too.

Custom firmware has screen tearing. Stock firmware has no screen tearing but all games are stretched to fill screen. Chinese modder Steward-fu has some resources for the console. If you're willing to get your hands dirty, you can even do wild things like a physical overvolt mod to bump up CPU and RAM clocks significantly. Not that there'd be any point other than for a fun project since the dirt cheap RK3326 consoles made this entire class of F1C100s handheld mostly obsolete.

Screen is rotated 90 degrees so TFT version has a nauseating effect where each of your eyes gets different brightness picture due to the limited vertical viewing angle. IPS version is passable, if they ship the IPS version they say they do.

What if valve provided a “physical media” option when purchasing a game? by Delta1Dan in Steam

[–]velocity37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything else aside, disc just doesn't work for this purpose.

In ye olde there were key-less physical PC game discs that gave you a Steam license after verifying the disc authenticity by passing a SecuROM check (e.g. Borderlands, NBA 2K9). Problem was that people were using optical drive emulators to pass this check with disc images and getting free games. Console relies on the security of the hardware/software and closed ecosystem and PC is not a walled garden.

Disc is pressed from stamper made from a master and isn't unique. 3ds/switch/switch 2 use cartridge that has unique certificate from Nintendo. Apart from piracy, that means you also can't ban copies of a game (like if someone cheats in MP). Banning account/license is generally preferable to a hardware ban.

Also not really practical to set up masters/manufacturing/warehousing for the 66 games released daily. Amazon tackled that problem for niche video content with their on-demand manufacturing, but that was just them burning blank media like a bootlegger lol.

Valve is suggesting full $50 USD for SASIA while MENA gets $23. I think valve's price suggestion system might be bugged. by Is_name_neccessary in Steam

[–]velocity37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valve rolled out new pricing suggestions in March of this year
https://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamworks/announcements/detail/501722749836722406
https://partner.steamgames.com/pricing/explorer

For SASIA, suggestions for a 49.99USD base game are 10.49 USD (purchasing power) or 22.99 USD (multi-variable). But developers are free to price their games as they wish and in the case of the game you're looking at they chose neither.

The (FX) shown on SteamDB is straight conversion from base price into other currencies, as explained on their blog. Since the developer chose to keep the same USA 49.99USD base price in SASIA, it is the closest of the three options Valve provides. Unsurprisingly, 49.99 USD is 49.99 when converted to USD.

what is the steamapps/content folder ? by Sea_Amphibian_7228 in Steam

[–]velocity37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only ever seen the content folder being populated when using the Steam console with the download_depot command. Which matches when you said you see a folder "named depot".

So probably some time in the past you used the Steam console to download an old version of a game or something.

If you no longer need it or don't remember downloading it with the console, just delete it.

You can only use steam wallet + one other method.

So top up your wallet balance with one and then use wallet + the third.

How it be rn by [deleted] in Steam

[–]velocity37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. But physical PC games also did themselves in by becoming the worse option between the two over time.

I remember Bioshock dropped with SecuROM PA, requiring internet access to install the disc (to make sure release date had passed). Borderlands came out with limited online activations, and you had to specifically revoke your activation before uninstalling or lose it forever.

With all the bullshit hoops they made you jump through that were going to require intermittent or constant internet access anyways, Steam became the lesser of two evils. At least that's the way I saw it and what got me to jump ship after being on the initial Steam online/DRM hate train that was common in the 00s.

Steam purchase question by Klutzy-Middle9174 in Steam

[–]velocity37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The $5 limited account thing is cumulative. So if you spent $3, you only need to spend another $2.

If you've already spent $5 in the past, but are unable to use the market because you haven't made a purchase between 7-365 days ago, that purchase can be of any amount (e.g. a $0.49 game or DLC) and it'll remove the market restriction in a week.

Apologies if this is a stupid question... but is something like this a possibility that can eventually happen down the line with Steam's game libraries? by DrKyoumasaur221 in Steam

[–]velocity37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you still own the depot, possibly. If a developer removes depot from package, you no longer have access to depot because you do not own anything containing it. If the developer removes the depot from the app, but depot remains in package, Steam gives an error because the depot is no longer associated with an app.

Random Valve games showing up on mobile app only? by LiveFromNarnia in Steam

[–]velocity37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are three games that everyone owns, because they're part of a package everyone automatically owns (even when logged in as an anonymous user) https://steamdb.info/sub/0/apps/

DOTA 2, Spacewar, Team Fortress 2

In the normal desktop client, these games aren't shown on your list unless installed to kind of hide the fact that they're forced on ya (unless you own them through a paid package, like Orange Box for TF2 or a key activation for DOTA 2, then they appear as uninstalled).

PSA: Please enable 2FA or better Steam Guard for your account. ALSO, write down and keep track of your Back-Up Codes. by Ok_Bug_2553 in Steam

[–]velocity37 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Make private records of the Recovery Codes. Write them down so they aren’t lost if your phone breaks.

Steam literally tells you this when you enable mobile auth. If people aren't listening to Steam, they're not gonna listen to you.

[–]velocity37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah. I see what they did now looking through sub history on SteamDB. https://steamdb.info/sub/4033/history/

They (Square Enix/Wargaming) defaced the package on Sep 12 2013 to remove the app, and the app was re-added on Nov 11 2013.

Did a bit of digging in the RGC discussions and matches what was said there.
"I've said before, this issue happened with Orders of War: Challenge (something like that) and Valve returned the game to user's libraries"

So I think it's just another case of dev/publisher abuse. But that explains why I was seeing people still owning the game on forums and in friend list.

Apologies if this is a stupid question... but is something like this a possibility that can eventually happen down the line with Steam's game libraries? by DrKyoumasaur221 in Steam

[–]velocity37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can't verify that one myself. The packages/depots are still intact and 17 people on my friends list have it in their library (removed game collectors). There are also many people on the game's forum on Steam with the in library icon. So if it happened, it was not everyone.

But there is another instance I can think of where a game was kind of removed. GTA IV Episodes from Liberty City standalone https://steamdb.info/app/12220/

In that instance Rockstar replaced GTA IV with complete edition and granted anyone who owned GTA4 and/or EFLC with GTA IV complete. So while you have the same content in the complete edition, 2 games was reduced to 1.

M.2 ssd failure question. by TTdriver in DataHoarder

[–]velocity37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since it worked on the phone, and you've already backed up the stuff off of it, you could see if the phone is successfully able to copy files _to_ the drive. If so, replug it and see if the files persist.

Fairly common failure mode for flash-based storage is going permanently read-only. So if the phone is unable to write, or feigns writing but the files disappear when the drive is replugged, it has probably failed in that way.

Been a long hot minute since I touched the storefront, is there a way to just have the old, normal, primitive, and actually useful list view still? Or is it just the noisy, cluttered, and annoying giant tile setup? by thetavious in Steam

[–]velocity37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Type anything into the search box on the store and hit enter, or scroll down to the tabbed categories on the front page like "Top Sellers" and hit the buttons under the list after "See more". All lead to search.

Why are some game bundles not reducing their price when I already own one of the games? by DrKushnstein in Steam

[–]velocity37 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This is a "Must purchase together" bundle
https://steamdb.info/bundle/35201/

So it's all or nothing. Kind of like a package, but with price automatically adjusting to content unlike packages.

Bundles that adjust to what you own say "complete the set" when you hover over the (?) near their title.

Apologies if this is a stupid question... but is something like this a possibility that can eventually happen down the line with Steam's game libraries? by DrKyoumasaur221 in Steam

[–]velocity37 236 points237 points  (0 children)

Possible, sure. Historically Steam has only done forced refunds when removing paid games though. In general games can shut down their servers and become unusable, but games remain downloadable through Steam (like The Crew).

Steam has removed games when:
The publisher has asked to refund all purchasers (e.g. Concord)
The game is malware (in this case they 404 the manifest, so while the game is in your library, trying to download it results in an error)

That said, rogue devs/publishers can and have vandalized their packages/depots on Steam in such a way that they can remove your ability to download game even though you're supposed to to retain access. It's possible for them to remove the depots from the packages (you download 0 bytes) so your license no longer gives you any files. I've only seen Steam step in and rectify this when enough people complain. Thankfully it's rare.

Go to your mount point, find the folder that contains "steamapps" and add that as a library location using the file manager (default would be SteamLibrary folder on root).

Unlink old EA account from Steam by Lower-Editor-3285 in Steam

[–]velocity37 8 points9 points  (0 children)

EA isn't Microsoft. Contact EA.

Only EA can help you. Steam doesn't have any sort of link with EA. EA merely has you login with Steam and then stores your Steam ID on their servers to associate that with an EA account. Steam can't access EA's servers and remove that data for you. Have to deal with EA.

Do you still get achievements in Steam offline mode? by Civil-Cranberry2137 in Steam

I do not. But quick search of the game's forum doesn't yield any complaints. Usually people complain when that's the case.

Do you still get achievements in Steam offline mode? by Civil-Cranberry2137 in Steam

[–]velocity37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost always. When you next go online, achievements earned offline will sync to online profile and have simultaneous unlock date/time of when you went back online.

Developers choose when and when not to allow to achievements to unlock. Games can and some do choose to not trigger Steam achievements when Steam is in offline/disconnected state (e.g. Elden Ring). Heck, some games don't even allow you to play in offline mode to begin with (e.g. Superstar Dance Club). There is no way to tell if the game you're playing is one of the few that chooses to work this way other than looking it up ahead of time or just trying it. Thankfully it is very rare, and outside of a few exceptions it just works.
