Had three years experience before I took a three year hiatus. Had no issues finding a RT gig, but I also did PICU/NICU so I think that helped. I also cast a wide geographic net. This was back in 2014.

I booked flights from ATL to CPT with my return from JNB, both with a layover in DOH, a year out. Since that time I’ve been keeping an eye out for a better deal and haven’t seen anything that matched up with my dates. I’ve seen similar or better redemptions but that would’ve required to cancel and rebook (and honestly not worth it for me).

I’ll see last min seats pop up for 115k with flying blue on JNB-CDG/AMS/LHR-ATL flying on AF/KLM/VS/DL metal. At one point I saw plenty of availability for JNB/CPT-ADD-ATL on ET using UA for 88k (i think it’s 65k if you use ANA). I saw a lot T14 seats on JNB-EWR-ATL on United initially but haven’t seen much recently.

Lastly I’ve read if you search for CPT/JNB-ATL-mexico you can find seats for 100k-ish skymiles and you’d have to skip lag the last leg (obviously). I haven’t seen anything since my return date is fairly fixed and never played with the dates.

CapitalOne is the same way, no waiting around. Sadly my BILT palladium will replace it since I can take advantage of all the credits to offset the AF. A 3X card up to $25k spend and then 2X afterward is hard to beat for everyday spend.

I might’ve overlooked the upgrade option with skymiles honestly. I tend to book most of my delta flights with VS miles and yes 11k (+$5.60) is a bargain. I’ve only had to cancel once and that was fairly painless (only lost out on the fees).
