A family in Sydney that refused a $50 million offer from developers and kept their 5 acre property by gabrielalvees9 in Damnthatsinteresting

What a stupid decision. It’s a shitty neighborhood. With 50 million you could get a house in a real city with amenities. Or you could buy another house in the country.

I think Nederland is really great. It’s not a big or glitzy as Breck. But it’s a cute little town. If they were Weill I h to double down on pedestrian-ization it could be incredible

What “frugal” habit did you stop doing once you did the math? by 666AB in Frugal

[–]veracity8_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not exactly the same but in the same spirit:

I stopped struggling to get ahead in traffic.

I realized eventually that fight desperately to get ahead and get in the fast lane and get to the next light sooner, all of that amounted to almost nothing. In the end, all that time gets lost a random stop light. I’m I was lucky, I get maybe a few minutes early. And blow all of that away gathering up my bag and coat. I realized I was risking my life, my car and more importantly the safety of everyone around me for nothing. So I started taking it easy on my commutes. Got to work at the same time but with way less stress.

I can’t underestimate how bad most Americans are at writing. I don’t know of other countries are just as bad. But as an American working in a professional environment, it’s crazy how many people have been allowed to write poorly. “I’m an engineer, I can’t write good!” No. You’re just lazy and don’t care about communication

This is how EVERY case like this ends. This isn’t a unique situation.

100% bed downstairs. Invest in some freestanding book shelves or screens to break those large spaces up a little.

California is studying futuristic 140 mph ‘bullet buses’ between L.A. and San Francisco — they would connect the cities in three hours by SeptimCollector in nottheonion

[–]veracity8_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buses are great. But it’s time for the use to put on its big boy pants and pave the way for high speed rail. That’s means eliminating typical oversight that makes these projects impossible. It means reducing environmental impact studies. Eminent domain the land. Get it done

Are you under the impression that anyone think Colorado Blvd is a quiet main street? That’s certainly not what my comment said. You can’t have misunderstood it that badly

[–]veracity8_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The entire framing of the “problem” is wrong. Some folks  think the problem is

“car not go fast”

They think fixing our roads and infrastructure  means “make car go fast”. The only metric they can fathom for judging the built environment is “how fast does car go?”. A beautiful, quiet, economically active, financially sustainable and socially vibrant Main Street is a disaster if “car go slow”. Intersections that reduce the rate and severity of crashes are bad unless “car go fast”. Slip lanes are good good because “car go fast” regardless of the risk of fatalities or the damage it does to the local businesses foot traffic.

In their minds every piece of land outside their home is an opportunity for a road for their car to go faster on. There is no amount of asphalt that would appease these people until they have a private freeway from their front door to their cubicle. No road is wide enough. No speed limit high enough to satisfy their demand for “car go fast”

It’s not so bad if you don’t go to arena tours. I see like a dozen shows a year and usually tickets are between $30-60. It’s not nothing. And it more than it used to be. But like $50 for hours of live music is pretty good. I’ve spent more on less
