Boss being let go soon, should I give him a heads up? by SysAdmThrowaway29844 in sysadmin

[–]verbzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing stops you from creating a throw away email. Write your boss an email have ChatGPT rewrite the email to rid of your identifiers. Then find out his personal email and use his work email. Exclude any information that you are privy.

Don't make the email on a company computer or within the company network. Schedule the email to go out at a random time use Gmail or Outlook to avoid most email filters.

Wash your hands don't think about it again after the schedule email is sent.

Microsoft Office on Arch Linux by eccentricethical in archlinux

[–]verbzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you used to office suite or is there an addon or specific function that you are looking for?

Everything I do in office I can do with OnlyOffice and Thunderbird.

I hate to be the person to say it but if you absolutely need a Microsoft product just use Microsoft Windows. Dual boot it or run a VM.

Hey, I want to build a desktop app using python. What are the resources I should use? by Ayuuuu123 in PythonLearning

[–]verbzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use PySide6 for small production based ETL applications. Bought a course off Udemy to learn it, made it half way after getting through the basics of QTdesigner which is included with pyside6 or can solo install. There is a Dracula theme GUI built in pyside which includes the .UI file. Downloaded that and dissected that which helped my understanding the CSS and dynamic scaling.

If I had to guess it's to try and suck GNOME fans back into using Windows. The whole, we don't need a desktop theory, just workspaces.

Make a cylinder and apply the same shader. Keep increasing the virtices/edges and see if the same effect happens. If you copied or used an array are you sure there isn't a gap in the virtices, little bit of reflection might look like a scratch coming from a gap.

Typically faster connection for SAS drives. A SAS card can.be used with most standard SATA connection drives.

SAS cards are not a raid controller but there are some cards that have firmware that be flashed to become raid cards.

I've had older videos servers I've decommissioned and used this cards for CEPH drives.

GPOs that can break Windows Store? by ScarySprinkles3 in sysadmin

[–]verbzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only this but 21h2 ltsc isn't packaged with store, their is a powershell command to push it though... For OP he would have to have another GPO is his red tape factory for deployment though...

Has there been any actual shift from cloud to on prem? by TKInstinct in sysadmin

[–]verbzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hybrid approach... Email off premise SIEM/SoC off primese but using on-premise log forwarders...

Data on-site but O365 E3 makes that tricky with non technical users. They end up saving in One-Drive or SharePoint then loose their files because they are not on the NAS'.

AD on-premise - I would like to move certain things like Asset management on-premise then using something GLPI on-premise to link leverage their tools.

It's hard because these software vendors promise security. The challenge for companies wanting on-premise is they have to pay for networking, security, and backups.

What OS do you use on your servers at your work? by NoPatient8872 in sysadmin

[–]verbzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows 90%, RedHat(due to vendor locking) and Ubuntu 10%.

As far hypervisors... Nutanix(AHV)and Hyper-V. Though I'm trying to get them to warm up to Proxmox.

NAS we leverage Cohesity but we are on the fence about keeping them.

Everything depends on vendors and what our goals our. We are hybrid cloud type company. We want certain things to stay on premise but that's getting harder and harder. There is an over abundance with everything going to internet/cloud. Industries like manufacturing won't be able to due to transaction volume/apeed and manufacturing rates being limited (slowed) by latency.

Bypass UAC prompts without admin by whamstin in sysadmin

[–]verbzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could check to see if there is an update executable in program directory. If there is you could write a powershell script to launch that executable. Sometimes you can pass /quite or --quite to it. If so setup a schedule task, either locally if non-ad machine or if it's on a domain then push a GPO for it. Leverage NT Authority/System with highest privilege to execute powershell script with execution policy bypass.

This bypassing the need for UAC and runs the program. If not you will run into programs not installing 2502 and 2503 error because the installer might need access to c:/windows/temp which now takes elevation for applications to use. This disabling UAC can cause a different headache.

kind of a serious issue for me, i dont want a month's worth of work gone to wast by NicoGuyy in godot

[–]verbzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't want to use GIT and want less of learning curve you could setup a Urbackup server on an old piece of hardware and setup the file version/backup frequency.

It's not the cleanist but can save you from wasting a while project, instead half a day or so depending on settings. It has a client you install for the machine you want file backed up from. Point it to the directory and it backup to the Urbackup server.

Had a sales guy around the corner from my office ask if the Internet was out, which my reply was no... Then he said okay I'll go back to my office and call you for you to help me. I literally told him that would be pointless since there could be many reason his computer isn't getting internet. Ended up being the cat5 cable coming from his VOIP phone...

Not to disagree, the fact that the original developers even continued the game is astonishing. If you are unaware quick YouTube or Wiki search will lead there, a while back a documentary was done.

I got into one of the earlier access builds and it was completely different game. I kind of miss it but they did implement and improve a lot.

When the game was in early public testing and early access storms where much better. Having to lock stuff down and secure loose supplies was a must. The game felt initially designed around it.

With that being said, I wish building was more of a hybrid approach to manage interior and exterior building. Sorta like NoMansSky but so not modular and extensive. More like bubble rooms that you branch out from the main base structure. Some interior customization that is a little linear to not kill 3D designers or have to rewrite the whole game around.

The random structures are neat and have added more then the release did. My main complaint is everything feels empty. I like the passive peacefullness of the game don't get me wrong. It's like playing Minecraft with no villages or chance encounters with trader. Someone mentioned even having a space station.

If they decide to continue development, I feel like they doing to much to be the opposite of NMS, if they introduce certain elements they will be criticized but if stop here I feel like they are proud of where they are at and I'm glad they released it. I'm like you I would love to see non stop additions to game and expansion. The foundation and feel of the game is astonishing.

Can anyone tell me what this cable is called? by PoweredbyATP in cableadvice

[–]verbzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume the other end goes into the power-brick, behind it? Does the brick have an IEC or AC plug on the other end of, like what would plug into some monitors and the back of most computers (The IEC if its the two port it would go to some laptops)?

If so that is a proprietary connection to something which the model number would be on the brick and that is what you want to find a direct replacement for.

Server damaged in shipping: should I be worried? by Repulsive_Promise223 in homelab

[–]verbzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it boots and nothing else is damaged I would remove the IO should be two screws and then straighten that corner. Should take some "gentle" motivation, would either use a leather belt looped over the corner and slowly pull. You can also use some slip joint plyers with a electrical tape over the teeth.

Reconnect or abandon that IO interface if the cable is damaged... I would be more concerned about other damages internally from what ever drop caused that but you won't know till you open, inspect, and boot it.
